J.J. Abrams on Recasting Khan in "Star Trek" Sequel

Famous director J.J. Abrams talks about the possibility of bringing his image of Khan in the Star Trek sequel

With the reboot of "Star Trek," many would say he either nailed the cast replacements of members aboard Enterprise correctly and others may say he did not. Although the original Spock from the television series appeared as future Spock in the film, William Shatner didn't make any appearance. The appearance of Spock was accepted by old fans of the series as well as new followers to "Star Trek."

J.J. Abrams is left with another decision on someone known rather well in Star Trek. How would fans feel about Abrams bringing back the villain Khan for future installments?

MTV News had the pleasure of addressing the matter with the famous director during an interview. Bringing the character to life wouldn't be anymore difficult than replacing Chris Pine in the role made famous by William Shatner.

"I think one of the byproducts of doing this movie was we were able to dispel the obvious and understandable concerns—how can 'Star Trek' possibly exist without those original cast members? Now that we are in a parallel existence with what fans of the original series love so much, we could introduce any number of characters, settings, references and situations that the original series introduced. Dealing with Khan would certainly be a challenge, but we had an equal challenge in finding our crew of the Enterprise."

With stories on the rise for the future sequels, Abrams and the writers responsible don't simply want a knock-off of the original television series or old movies if they were to bring back Khan's character.

"While I don’t want to approach the second film as a remake of episodes we’ve seen in the past... nothing is off limits in terms of what we’re discussing," he said. "When Bob Orci and the others who know 'Trek' so well, the fun of working with them is they know this universe so deeply they’re the ones who are always considering what it means to deal with the stuff in the past, so it’ll be exciting," Abrams said.

Whispers68: So, should Khan be brought back in the sequel or should the director take on another villain?

I don't feel Khan was sufficiently fleshed out! So yeah! Go forth! Also, with this alternate timeline, it shouldn't have affected TOS's past. Meaning, Khan's time preceded the Enterprise crew's timeline alteration. Khan wasn't (theoretically that is) affected. When the Romulans showed up in Kirk's father's time, Khan's time happened in earth's history centuries before, including his escape on the Botany Bay. So he should still be floating adrift in space.

KHAN!! I don't care if they put (fricking) teletubbies in the next on piloting that bird of prey that can shoot while cloaked. Oh yeah, I'm on board. This is going to be awesome.

Isn't that a given, considering the altered timeline?

I'd rather see the Klingons in the second movie, and then have Khan in the third movie.

Khan might be too early for the series to use--Save him for the third one.

The Klingons would be my choice, I would love to see either Kang or Kor return in the new version.

Someone should tell this c**ksucker that certain things should be left the f**k alone. Khan of all things, can't this guy get someone to write a f**king movie with new ideas? I'm not f**king wrong here, why do a reboot just to rehash the other movies or characters? Hollywood has plenty of writers with talent go find one. You have to be a real f**king idiot to get yourself involved in a reboot and you can't bring anything new to the table. Star Trek should have been left the f**k alone if they were just going to steal from the past episodes, or movies. Klingons are a broad spectrum, there's a whole race of them, use them. Don't figure out a way to ruin something that was a great storyline.

@Assassin

That's a good point really. If you're doing a newer image/reboot, the idea of bringing back old villains but with a new face in a way undermines the purpose.

So you feel he should create his/writers idea of an entirely new villain or race of villains?

Phinehas - 11/3/2009, 3:56 PM
Khan would meanwhile be floating around in space...

It doesn't have to be rehashed. Sure! Bring Klingons into the picture. I'd love to see how Khan wipes the floor with them. That would be hilarious!

@ Assassin:I get what you're saying but I don't think it was a rehash or a reboot. It was a whole new story with the same characters in a parallel universe, much like star wars infinities. People complained about that too but come on, the death star blows up the rebel base in the first one and Vader turns Leia into a sith. That was awesome. Khan is SUCH a huge character that he has to pop up at some point, in some fashion. He has an old vendetta against Kirk from when they were young, maybe this sets it up and rolls it out, leaving Khan to be a multiple movie villian.

Khan is a double edged sword. If done well it will be good, but done bad and the new franchise is over. Why not explore something entirely new or bring back Harry Mud. We never saw Kirk and Muds first encounter. Just putting that out there.

@ ASSASSIN666, I got your back buddy totally on this one. It is completely ridulous and sad that they have to take old stories or characters and remake them. It breaks my heart to not see new stories. And they are possibly asking this guy to do a superhero movie?

I'd love for DDL to be Khan but that will never happen. So who else??? How old should he be concidering that Pine will look alot younger than what Shatner did in the original? I say, if you need a good villain and someone that's willing for comic book films, Rutger Hauer's your man!

Javier Bardem is the only one that could pull it off and give us a scarier deeper character than Ricardo Montelban.

After seeing no country for old men he is beyond perfect. Im thinking you could integrate khans background with the eugenics wars from rich arabian oil families from the middle east that funded a secret space program in the 90's and launched the botany bay. we'll just hope that they come up with something deep and epic to keep a good thing going.
