STAR TREK: Chris Pine On "Cursed" Fourth Movie And Where The Franchise Has Gone Wrong

With Star Trek 4 still no closer to happening, Captain Kirk actor Chris Pine has weighed in with his thoughts on the franchise's failings and admits he believes the fourth instalment is likely "cursed."

Star Trek 4 remains trapped in development hell, and while the franchise is still managing to find success on television, it appears Paramount Pictures is really struggling to crack the property in theaters.

Those first few efforts found their fair share of success, of course, earning mostly positive reviews and solid enough box office takings. However, with blockbusters often expected to earn upwards of $1 billion to be deemed a true hit, it's hardly surprising Beyond's $344 million global haul saw it deemed a disappointment.

Talking to Esquire (via SFFGazette.com), Captain Kirk actor Chris Pine shared his thoughts on where things stand with the franchise and argues it was a mistake to expect Star Trek to do Marvel numbers.

"I’m not sure Star Trek was ever built to do that kind of business," he says. "I always thought, Why aren’t we just appealing to this really rabid fan group and making the movie for a good price and going on our merry way, instead of trying to compete with the Marvels of the world?"

Despite being open to returning as Kirk, Pine seems to feel that this iteration of Star Trek may have fun its course. "After the last one came out and didn’t do the $1 billion that everybody wanted it to do, and then Anton passed away, I don’t know, it just seemed..." After pausing for a moment, he admitted that the franchise "feels like it's cursed."

As for where things go next - after J.J. Abrams made the bold proclamation that the original cast would return for a new movie that's since lost director Matt Shakman to Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four - Pine is in the dark.

"I don’t know anything. In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything. I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors," the actor explains. "I would say it’s frustrating. It doesn’t really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it’s how it’s always been. I love the character. I love the people. I love the franchise."

Since Star Trek Beyond was released in 2016, one popular idea included a reunion between Chris Pine's Captain Kirk and his father, played in 2009's Star Trek by Chris Hemsworth. Defenders director S.J. Clarkson was once attached to helm that version, while Paramount has since considered movies from Noah Hawley (Fargo) and legendary filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.

The latest iteration doesn't appear to be going anywhere fast and we'd guess that Pine is ready to move on from Kirk at this point.

Why does it suck? The faster this JJ star trek dies the faster we can get a new version of star trek. You know......the good version 💁

I did like the actors... but Abrams is pure poison.

I can change. I agree with you on this.

Since '66, still never missed a Star Trek episode.

they were trying to compete with star wars not marvel. now its not much of a war because both suck

This is what happens when deviation from the source material meets trying to be something you're not💁

Imagine a star trek film that has a budget of 80 million and focuses on human relations and actually explored and maybe even had a moral to the story😳....

Imagine.....

The best Star Trek movies (First Contact or Wrath of Khan) were supported by the TV shows. Fans were already so invested in these characters and feel so at home with that world. Abrams Star Trek is fine, but it also feels hollow and empty and like there isn’t much more that exists beyond what you can see in frame.

I really enjoyed 2009 trek but was really disappointed in Into Darkness. Felt like it was trying to be Star Trek X The Dark Knight
and I never saw Beyond but heard it was decent.

@HulkisHoly - Why not just watch Beyond?

@HulkisHoly - yeah Beyond was decent. I have a few minor issues with it though, but I won't go into them because they are spoilers.

Still, it manages to capture that exploration and interaction with strange new things pretty well.

@HulkisHoly - No. No it wasn’t. It was even worse than Into Darkness. Consider yourself lucky to have saved 2 hours of your life. I will never be able to scrub the scene of Kirk riding a bubble trailing space motorbike out of my brain. Dear god, the horror 😖 Not to mention defeating an enemy horde with a 300 year old Beastie Boys anthem. 🤣😂😄😁☺️🙂😐😕🙁☹️😣😖😫😭🤢🤮

Star Trek doesn't need to be the same as Marvel.

@Repian -

This has nothing to do with marvel. He just used the buzz word to convey that a film doesn't have to hit a billion to be considered a hit.

Unfortunately for him his star trek films flop because the budgets are insane for a film franchise that has never been a block buster. If the last film made a profit there would've been a sequel years ago.😐

@AmazingFILMporg - although pretty sure Beyond didn't just not make marvel money (which it was never going to), but pretty sure it failed to break even

Seriously at this point just put the kelvin timeline to bed and learn from the past

They finally have a well received series with Brave New Worlds, build on that

You can keep the budget low by reusing sets, costumes and obviously less expensive actora

Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan is still the best of the franchise, they only had 2 new sets, everything else was modifications of stuff left over from the motion picture and other stuff (even khan’s ship was just a redecoration of the enterprise bridge)

Star Trek 6 The Undiscovered Country another great reused a lot of Next Generation sets, with extras covering obvious parts up

Weirdly they put out their best after failures and with low budgets

@dracula - I like the idea of reusing sets. Otherwise they just get put it storage or dismantled, but this way the work of set designers gets the chance to get admired longer.

Star Trek rarely works in movies, stick to TV. Hour a week show, you get to explore more depth than a 2 hr movie once every 3-5 years. Picard S3 is soooooooo good hopefully once Discovery is a distant memory we can have a new series of Trek, the next, next Generation. And no not all the kids of TNG. That idea is shocking

bkmeijer1 - 3/4/2023, 4:24 AM
He makes a good point. Star Trek isn't really a blockbuster franchise, but moreso this serialized tv adventure imo. And it's having some success again as the latter now.

Still, I do wanna see that fourth movie with both Pine and Hemsworth. Doubt it'll ever happen with Hemsworth taking a few steps back from acting though.

Chris (Micro-Penis) Pine is not even as good a captain as the TV captains.

Love him as Kirk, love the new series (even with its problems). Really hoping they can find a serious script that lets Star Trek be Star Trek. Sci-Fi and not Sci-Fantasy. Seriously, it's what everyone wants. We don't want more Disney SW sequels, we want original, creative content.

Hhmmm ... not entirely sure why Star Trek fans don't like the most recent, cinematic Trek trilogy. I thought they're all great with Into Darkness being the best one for me. However, I never really cared for the series when growing up, although I've seen my fair share of episodes of different generations. I also don't understand why some movies have similar budgets and box office numbers, but some are considered successful while others aren't.

The recasting gimmick was enough to get people into the theaters once, but that first movie didn’t really convert many. So instead of being a solid hit that they could build on, it actually represented the ceiling for the property.

just get Nicholas Meyer to write/direct. make it on a small budget, make it smart and thought provoking but it doesn't have to be a high octane villain of the werk again
