Now that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in theatres, it's been easy to spot some of the instances where the much-discussed reshoots took place. A multitude of scenes - both big and small - that were marketed in the trailers are notably absent, specifically in the film's final act. Despite the positive reaction to the film, many were disappointed to not see some pretty great scenes, such as the shot of Jyn Erso striding defiantly towards a TIE Fighter, or Saw Gerrera's ominous speech. While we may never know the real reason why these awesome moments were excised, actor Ben Mendelsohn (Director Orson Krennic) has hinted to Collider that there is a majorly different version of the film out there.
As with most movies, when filming his scenes, Mendelsohn would perform different deliveries of his lines. Usually this is done so that when the film goes to the editing bay, the director and editor have the option to choose the best take. The actor did admit that a few crucial scenes he filmed were vastly different in terms of content. "We did have multiple, multiple ways of going at any given scenario, we had multiple readings of it. So should they ever decided to, there would be a wealth of ways of approaching these different things. And I know from having seen sort of the crucial kind of scenes throughout it, I know there’s vastly different readings of at least four of those scenes."
When asked by Collider if this meant that there was an alternate version of the film due to these differences, Mendelsohn confirmed that this was indeed the case, saying there was anywhere from 20 to 30 scenes that were very different from how they played out in the final theatrical cut. "Absolutely [there is a different version], with enormous differences within I would’ve said 20 or 30 of the scenes. There really would be. There would be enormously different renderings."
While this is certainly some interesting information, it's incredibly unlikely that Lucasfilm would release an alternate cut when Rogue One makes the jump to Blu-Ray. For now, it seems we'll have to hope that the real story makes its way out sooner or later. Would you like to have seen a different version of Rogue One? Sound off below!
