Two Major DCU Projects Reportedly Dead At DC Studios As HBO Passes On Poison Ivy & Catwoman Shows

According to a reliable source, we can scratch two more projects off DC Studios' Gods and Monsters slate, while DC and HBO have also passed on TV shows focusing on Poison Ivy and Catwoman...

With Lanterns set to premiere this Sunday, The Ankler has published a report detailing the show's tumultuous journey to the screen, while also sharing disappointing updates on some other small-screen DCU projects.

Despite DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn recently assuring fans that both Waller and Paradise Lost are still moving forward, Lesley Goldberg believes that they are no longer in development.

Announced as part of the initial "Gods and Monsters" DCU slate, Paradise Lost was conceived as a Wonder Woman-adjacent series focusing on Diana's fellow Amazonian warriors. "Set in Themyscira, home of the Amazons and birthplace of Wonder Woman," reads the official logline, "this drama focuses on the genesis and political intrigue of an island of all women."

Waller, meanwhile, had seemed a little closer to coming to fruition, and we had heard that Viola Davis was all set to reprise her role as the DCU's ruthless A.R.G.U.S. chief.

Davis debuted as "The Wall" in David Ayer's Suicide Squad before making appearances in Gunn's The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker show. She also provided the voice of the character in the recent Creature Commandos animated series, and returned for the second season of Peacemaker.

"A live action series, the spinoff of Peacemaker, centered around Amanda Waller and her relationship with her daughter, Leota. If there's one government bureaucrat who shouldn't be messed with, it’s Amanda Waller, founder of the infamous Task Force X, better known as the Suicide Squad," reads Waller's  logline.

Apparently, the Booster Gold series is still moving forward and a new writer is currently being sought. However, those rumored Poison Ivy and Catwoman shows we've been hearing about won't be happening after DC and HBO passed on the respective pitches.

Details on the potential Catwoman series were sparse, but the Poison Ivy show was rumored to be set in Matt Reeves' "BatVerse."

What do you make of these updates? Were you surprised to hear that Paradise Lost and Waller have been shelved, or did you feel that the writing was on the wall?

Lanterns is set to debut on August 17 and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

"This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan," James Gunn said of the project when it was first announced. "We have a few other Lanterns peppered in there but this is really a terrestrial based TV show which is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over Precinct Earth in it they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our largest story of the DCU."

@MCUKnight11 - yeah , that’s a bummer especially since if this is the one about the Zoe Kravitz version we got in The Batman…

I feel like her ending was apt for a spinoff so sucks it’s not happening though don’t really mind the Poison Ivy show not moving forward though.

@MCUKnight11 - Have to keep in mind that everything moving forward has to be approved by Paramount now so this news isn't a surprise. We're headed for a reboot....hopefully Paramount gets DC right but I don't think we're going to be seeing world building going on like the DCEU and DCU with Paramount.Which at this point is clear DC needs to be stand alone stories for awhile.

Hate to say it, but I think the Ivy and Catwoman shows were Reevesverse...

@UltimaRex - Agree, with Supergirl's flop and all the trade rumors of WB pushing Gunn to fast track DCU's Wonder Woman and Batman....I doubt Gunn wants to make any more Reeve spin-offs as it will be confusing and competing with its own brand.

I think Batman 2 might be the final film in his universe, I wouldn't be surprised if they cancelled Penguin S2 as it was never officially greenlit either.

dc has a project selection issue because a cat woman show would be a hit

rebooting suicide squad, peacemaker, creature comandos, green lantern as tv instead of a movie are weird investments

@dotherightthing - Even Peacemaker which imo is their best project, feels like something that should have come out years into the DCU, like a phase 4-5 project. Not something that starts their universe.

@Urubrodi - 100%. even if you can't do batman or wonder woman why not do Constantine or question or static shock

being dc fan is rough

@dotherightthing - Green Lantern I get but I feel like doing Creature Commandos and Peacemaker as tv shows makes more sense then doing them as movies imo.

You mean James Gunn lied to us. That is unlike him.

We are now officially operating in a capacity that is worse than it's predecessor the DCEU. So this whole reboot was all for nothing.

@Forthas - "We are now officially operating in a capacity that is worse than it's predecessor the DCEU."

Hard to disagree with this. We are coming up on four years since James Gunn was handed the keys to some of the greatest comic book IP ever created, and in that time he and his team have squeezed out (i) an average Superman film, (ii) a disappointing Supergirl movie with a very questionable casting choice for the lead, (iii) a cartoon (Creature Commandos), and (iv) a "grounded" Green Lantern TV series that is more reminiscent of productions on The CW. I reserve judgment on Clayface, that might be good. Not holding my breath for Man of Tomorrow.

@Forthas - sadly yes. and at this point, i only look forward to The Batman Part II and the new Batman animated movie as everything else will be for nothing when this DCU gets canned. too bad as i liked Some of the casting for certain characters. WB will NEVER learn.

My friends! I cannot describe to you how frustrating it is for me as someone who prefers DC characters to any others. At this point, I enjoy Marvel, and even The Boys shared-universe over DC. To me, the inability to create a competent and consistent DC comic book film franchise is professional malpractice. I mean, it has been 13 years since they started. It is in absolutely nobody's interest for this to continuously fail. It weakens the company and brand, hurts shareholders, embarrasses the creatives associated with it, and frustrates fans. This is just unacceptable.

@Forthas - agreed with you there... I grew up a DC fan cuz of the animated timmverse so to speak. Batman TAS, JL, JLU... but when it comes to the movies marvel absolutely has DC blown away... my favorite DC movies are Not in the shared universe and happen to be DCs best character: Batman. With that said.. i just wish they could get their shit together and gives a good connected universe. The blueprint is right in front of them... look at the animated timmverse.. its really not hard.

Rant over

While a Poison Ivy show sounds interesting (great character and a top tier Batman villain imo), the choices to do these types of shows (Paradise Lost, Waller, Booster Gold, Olsen and Grodd, etc.) over more popular DC characters is baffling.

I’m glad some of these are getting canned, and at this point I’m for canning Gunn’s DCU altogether.

Wouldn't mind Catwoman or Ivy shows. I'd like to see the versions in which they are older, at the end of their careers, training their more competent better behaving replacements.
