Gwendoline Christie On Captain Phasma Never Taking Her Helmet Off In STAR WARS

"...it was a really interesting opportunity to play a female character where we formed an opinion of her based on her actions rather than the way she has been made flesh," said Christie.

Leading up to the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, audiences and die-hard Star Wars fans were very intrigued with the chrome aesthetics of Gwendoline Christie's Captain Phasma.  However, the character didn't exactly turn out to be the bad ass that everyone had anticipated.  Christie is scheduled to reprise her role as Captain Phasma in Episode VIII so there's a chance for redemption as Phasma will surely want her revenge against Finn (John Boyega).  But don't tell Gwendoline that audiences were left wanting more from her character in The Force Awakens. Said Christie---

“I thought it was a really interesting opportunity because as an actor I’m interested in transformation and different kinds of roles.  What’s the role about? Who is the character? What does the character mean in the function of a project or story? I thought it was a really interesting opportunity to play a female character where we formed an opinion of her based on her actions rather than the way she has been made flesh. And that concept within a Star Wars movie, a mainstream phenomenon, was very modern and interesting and exciting. I made no secret of the fact I wanted to be in the film, Icampaigned hard to be in the film, but to be in it asthat kind of character – she’s a woman, she’s in armor, the armor isn’t sexualized, and in the film we don’t see the actor’s face – I thought that was an exciting, modern concept. And obviously, I’m delighted to be in another film [Episode VIII].”

Star Wars: Episode VII arrives in theaters on December 15, 2017.  Rian Johnson assumes directing duties from J.J. Abrams.  Johnson will also be the sole contributor to the script.  Filming is currently underway.

I was so hyped up for her character.
Almost as much as @Gusto was hyped up for his session with Josh

Thanks for making clear Phasma escaped with Hux and Kylo Ren.

We'll see more of her, of course.

Hope she turns out to be more than Boba Fett - all looks, did nothing remarkable.

"Formed an opinion of her based on her actions"

What actions? She did *nothing* in the movie.

TheBad@ Rey was a version of Jaina Solo. What's "leftist" about women? Are right wing societies gender-based? I don't think they are, are they?

I do agree though that Phasma was, like Gusto's Jeremy Piven, all hype and no substance.

And how do we know she escaped with Hux and Kylo Ren? Shouldn't she be so much compact garbage, right now? Or did Han and Finn just decide against that between scenes?

Phasma should have been the Bobba Fet of the new star wars generation but instead with only a little screen time this guy stole out hearts:

TR-8R is not the new Boba Fett.

He's the new Admiral Akbar.

He has one moment. One catchphrase.
And it's one that Kylo Ren steals, later on in the movie, when he also screams "Traitor" at Finn.

Never said TR-8R was the new Boba Fett. I said Phasma should of been the new Boba Fett. And that she should have won us as a character.

And I agree with TR8R being like Akbar.
