New 'Creature' Featurette For ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Showcases Lots Of Practical VFX

A big emphasis was placed on the return of practical effects to Star Wars films after Disney purchased the franchise, and it looks like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is living up to that promise...

A lot of criticism for George Lucas's Star Wars prequels fell on their over-reliance for CGI characters and environments as opposed to the practical visual effects the series was built on. Thankfully when the franchise was purchased by Disney in 2012, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy promised the priority of using practical VFX over CGI (when possible) during the making of the new films.

The Force Awakens lived up to fan expectations by having a very intricate balance between CGI and practical effects, and based on a new featurette, it looks like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be following suit. The short clip provides a look at some of the film's new creatures and the process that goes into crafting their realiastic facial expressions and movements.

Check the featurette out below, along with two TV spots with a slice of new footage.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers.

The movie opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016.

These really are amazing creature designs. Can you believe this adorable chipmunk creature is 100% practical?

I'm sick of all this practical effects talk, JUST MAKE A GOOD SOTRY!! The prequels were packed with practical effects as well, that didn't mean it was good.

The force awakens did the same thing to promote the film and it ended up being a senseless knock off of A New Hope
If you dont believe that the prequels used practice effects too here is some proof.

@FinnBoyega - No one doubts that the prequels used practical effects. It was the fact that they used CGI where they really didn't need to that was the issue.

Agreed that story should always come first.

@MattBellissimo - Well the force awakens used practical effects where they didn't need to in some points (I"m looking at you pointlessly drawn out BB-8 and Rey meeting scene) and thy used CGI for the sake of it in the dumb rathtaars scene.

@MattBellissimo - My main problem with this new star wars is that the force awakens ruined so much of Rey's character progression that it will take a miracle to retcon what they did in episode VIII.

@FinnBoyega - Not to mention JJ abrams bastardisation of the force, an ability which took Luke years to master, in which he still failed time and time again in Return of the Jedi. But now we have Rey randomly being a master in the force and being able to over throw Kylo ren, a character who had whipped out all of Luke's previous jedi in training.

@FinnBoyega - Rewatching the prequels (with the Weekly Planet commentary) has been really eye-opening to me. I they had a lot of CG before, but it's way worse than I had remembered. Apparently they never even built a single suit of Clone Trooper armor. That's just madness.

Maybe Phantom Menace still had its share of miniatures, but Attack of the Clones was dire viewing.

@Spock0Clock - yeah we can all agree attack of the clones is the worst star wars film

All Disney are doing with the new star wars movies is pushing the fact that they are using practical effects whilst the movies are surrounded by some of the worst star wars characters like Rey and Kylo Ren.

Rey is a horribly acted and poorly conceived and unrelatable character. The same goes for Finn who's motivation makes no sense what so ever. Now we got the stone cold ting from felicity jones which everyone is just gonna excuse cos she looks kinda cute and the movie has practical effects.

@BillCipher999 - Rey's acting was just her being wide eyed and moving her eyebrows

On the subject of practical, I'm always amazed at how much you can do with a pair of contacts and eye makeup. Mantis looks awesomely creepy in Guardians even before the antennae.

Creature designers spend so much damn time trying to make CG look expressive and "human" by giving them Ultron teeth and Pixar eyes, but the subtlety of a not-quite-human eye is where it's at.

I know what they were trying to go for, but it's 250 million dollars of 100% Garbo.
On the other hand, a 15 million dollar movie with a puppet?

Hello, lifetime of nightmares of this thing staring into my soul.
