SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY's Disappointing Box Office Blamed On AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR And DEADPOOL 2

Well, not necessarily on the films themselves, but a Disney exec has suggested that the crowded box office is to blame for Solo: A Star Wars Story's lackluster opening weekend. Find out what he had to say.

Though we have a long way to go before Solo: A Star Wars Story can be labelled a "flop", there's no denying that Disney and Lucasfilm's latest foray to the galaxy far, far away has underwehlmed at the box office since it debuted this past weekend.

Since the numbers came in, fans and analysts have been trying to determine what might have led to the Ron Howard-directed Star Wars flick performing so poorly, but one movie executive seems to feel it's simply down to bad timing.

Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis reckons Solo was released too soon after Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2, and that many potential cinema-goers may not have been ready to make another trip to the theater.

“There’s a question of frequency, and how many times people will go to the movies. Is this too much and too soon for a third time in a five-week period?” Hollis asked during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

While it's likely that box office congestion did have some impact on Solo's totals, Hollis acknowledges that there are more factors at play. “We have a lot of work to do in trying to understand this,” he continued. “We are all over it and will spend a lot of time digging into why things happened the way they did in various markets. We have a year and a half before ‘Episode IX’ comes out.”

What do you guys make of this theory? Why do you believe Solo: A Star Wars Story has underperformed so far? Let us know in the usual place.

Okay, but doesn't Disney always release a movie on the last weekend of May?

@BlackPhillip - True, it's just DP coming our right before it swallowed it up. Also the Marketing Campaign was shit for this

I agree that those movies felt the film a massive blow. Star wars should stick to December releases. They have proven to do well there. You can't say they didn't know that deadpool and avengers weren't there. Seems like the marketing team dropped the ball here.

Yeah and also the troubled production process and the near nonexisting promotional run helped a lot. Mr Hollis is still right tho

On one hand I’m kinda glad this flopped because it shows Lucasfilm they cant become stagnant and uncreative with Star Wars and still just print money.

On the other hand, I thought this movie was actually really good, and deserved better.

You would think marketing company would already know this. You are literally competing with yourself, and losing....

Should've moved Solo to December where that franchise has owned. It gives enough time between TLJ, allows them to have a proper marketing campaign and it provides an alternative to the award season movies and with that little Christmas magic in the air, Star Wars can still feel like something of an event.

Coming a handful of months after the last Star Wars film in the shadow of the MCU's 10 year finale event with little build up wasn't going to do it any favours.
