STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT 4 Concept Art Reveals WHAT IF...?-Style Takes On The Franchise's Heroes And Villains

Some mind-blowing concept art from Star Wars Battlefront 4 has resurfaced (via SFFGazette.com), and it offers a vastly different take on the characters from a certain Galaxy Far, Far Away.

This wasn't set to be part of the EA series of games, though, and was actually what Free Radical Design had planned for the original Battlefront franchise back in the mid-2000s. This game was ultimately cancelled, but had been set to tell a "What If...?" style story that presented the Star Wars franchise in a very different light.

For example, in the gallery of concept art which you can check out HERE, there are hundreds of designs with familiar faces looking anything but. Obi-Wan Kenobi, for example, has turned to the Dark Side, as have characters like Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. There's even a Chewbacca who never escaped being enslaved.

We also get to see General Grievous without his robotic body, Count Dooku as a Jedi, and a Darth Maul who went down a heroic path.

To put it another way, everyone who was good is now evil and vice versa!

There are some insanely cool designs, though, including a couple you can see below featuring a Darth Vader who has been redeemed and returned to the Light. The other Vader, however, clearly overthrew Palpatine and became the new Emperor (a look that suits him nicely).

Whether it's in an animated series or video game, this idea is one Lucasfilm should definitely consider revisiting at some point. After all, it would allow the studio to bring back some iconic characters, albeit in ways that fans would never anticipate. With that, they'd be able to tell a lot of unexpected stories.

Which of these alternate Star Wars designs is your favourite? Don't forget, you can see the full gallery here.

I think Star Wars could do well with a What If styled show. Same animation style as the Marvel What If but strictly as a what if and not a multiverse thing.

@SonOfAGif - could even do it as a multiverse thing with The World Between Worlds, but it's not a necessary angle for it to work.

Can always call it Infinities, like the comics that had a similar premise.

This concept art was leaked a long time ago. I mean really, this stuff is absurdly old, like a YEAR or more old. Grasping at straws with this article.

You mean Battlefront 3

@kazuma - Yeah, there was never a Battlefront 3. Not in the older series and not in the rebooted series.

In the original series there was Battlefron 1 and 2. And then it had 2 spin offs, Renegade Squadron and Elite Squadron, which were only available on handheld systems. But those were smaller spin offs. Not main line titles in the series. So I'm not sure where he's getting Battlefront 4 from.

@CorndogBurglar - Prior to the release of the cancelled Battlefront 3 (which they were making a ton of progress with at the time, you can even find footage online), the game developers were already planning out/concepting Battlefront 4 with the whole What-If angle for it, so it's accurate.

@kazuma - the plan was to make a traditional battlefront game for the third one then going with a what if situation for the fourth game. The third game was being developed, but the fourth game was starting concept art before it was all shut down.

It's pretty standard for sequels to be developed alongside the original so it can be released within a year or two. Think call of duty or assassins creed. If they didn't overlap development, it'd probably be 5 years between titles there.

Battlefront 4? Never knew there was a third. Either way, I feel like we've already seen some of these. Jedi Leia not though, and I think that's a pretty cool one
