STAR WARS: Kathleen Kennedy Confirms Taika Waititi's Movie Will Be Released Before ROGUE SQUADRON

Taika Waititi is going to leap straight from the MCU to a Galaxy Far, Far Away as Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed his movie is next up for the studio, also revealing when it will be set.

Thursday's film and television panel at Star Wars Celebration delivered its fair share of surprises and announcements, but Lucasfilm was oddly quiet when it came to the franchise's big screen future. At the end of 2020, the studio dropped a flashy announcement video for Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron movie, though that project appears to have stalled after failing to take flight.

Talking to Total Film (via SFFGazette.com), Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy was asked if the next Star Wars movie will be the one being developed by Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi. "That's correct," she responded, adding that it's coming "late 2023" (but stopping short of revealing whether it will be in theatres in Star Wars' old December slot).

During a separate conversation with Empire, Kennedy actually confirmed plans for future movies to move beyond The Rise of Skywalker. That's a big departure from the past few years which have seen Lucasfilm focus on filling in some gaps during well-known parts of the timeline.

"We’re moving further beyond the existing sequels as we look to our movie space," she explained. "The sequel era] is what we talk a lot about in terms of where we’re going with our movies, and just how far out from that we’ll go. That’s very much the space we’re concentrating on."

The site also pushed for an update on The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson's trilogy after it was first announced nearly half a decade ago. "Rian had such a gigantic success with Knives Out that he’s very committed to trying to get that done. So it’ll be a while," Kennedy said. "As you know, we have to work three, five years in advance on what we’re doing. So that’s where that sits."

We'd like to think a slate announcement is imminent, but Lucasfilm struggles to plan ahead, and when they do, half of what they lay the groundwork for doesn't seem to become a reality.

Needless to say, you'll want to keep checking SSFGazette.com for updates as we have them!

@OmegaDaGrodd -

Taika is playing his cards just right.

He gets to make Disney lots of money while playing with their toys and building his portfolio with blockbusters and at the same time getting to make his job jo rabbit type films over at 20th century.

That's a fancy way of saying that we won't be seeing Rogue Squadron for a long time.

Also, when talking about post-ST movies I immediately assume they're already thinking about the next Skywalker Saga trilogy (the threequel trilogy?), which they should wait atleast another decade with in my opinion.

@bkmeijer1 - if they ever do another Skywalker trilogy, they should have Rey start up a Skywalker cult that goes dark side and takes over the galaxy, until the actual Skywalker blood shows up and cuts all their hands off

@ProfessorWhy - I rather just see them take George's original sequel trilogy plan out of the bin and just go with a crime syndicate being the villains

So Kennedy says it’s time for a wacky, humor filled Star Wars movie because that seems to be Taika’s MO.

The bad taste of the sequel trilogy has not yet faded. I think they should hold Back on another trilogy.

After Solo: Iger said, We need to stop making so many Star Wars movies.

2022: Kennedy says, Let’s dilute the crap out of this property so the fans really get sick of it and nothing seems special.

Has anyone seen Our Flag Means Death? I fell in love with that show. I love Taika and his sense of humor. It's always so full of heart and seldom is too self serious. I'd be very interested in seeing what toys he'd like to play with in this universe.

I'd love for him to play a Sith Lord that's just the biggest idiot in the galaxy, but is just too ridiculously OP with the Dark Side nobody dare question his rule, even when it's beyond embarrassing.

And maybe some of his New Zealand friends could be a rag tag band of pirates with no desire to tangle with Jedi or Sith, they just wanna steal credits and survive the Wars happening all over the Stars.

Well aware the universe is terrified of him but also making fun of him, one night he sneaks away from his lava castle and disguise himself as just a really evil looking regular person, and joins the crew of rag tags in an attempt to learn from real criminals, and antics ensue as the pirates are also being pursued by the Sith trying to get back their leader.

Not sure I want way too much humour in a Star Wars movie,as much as I like Thor:Ragnarok he has made Thor into nothing more than a joke.

@marvel72 - nothing more? That's an exaggeration. Just say you don't like the tone of this new direction, you don't need to blow things out of proportion. He's still a multi-facited character with probably the biggest character arc out of ANY of the original Avengers. No other Avenger watched their family die, their people slaughtered, their home world obliterated, the love of his life snapped, gone through a deep depression that took the form of substance abuse, over eating and escapism, and are now on a quest of self rediscovery..... on top of all the serious issues he faces movie to movie, there are also slow quiet moments when Chris shows Thor has tremendous heart and wisdom for being a bit thick headed and ignorant in ways. He's a very multi-facited and layered character. He just is.

Now, having said that, I can totally support you just wanting something different, or the humor not landing for you, or just wanting no humor at all.... but to say he's nothing more than a joke is just another example of fans over exaggerating to sway public opinion to align with yours.

@UGLYsonic - Yeah and we get fat Thor and Thor running into windows like a drunk bird. Some Thor is cool the other is way too comical. He was my favorite part of Infinity War. Unfortunately he was my least favorite part of Ragnorok and End Game.

@GarthRanzz - well personally most of Thors comedy doesn't land for me, but I find most of the MCUs humor to be forced and the low hanging fruit of comedy. But just because I'm not a fan of the over the top nature of the comedic elements of the character doesn't mean I can't see the plethora of other dimensions Hemsworth brings to the role.

He's capable of writing a script, unlike Jenkins. WW2 was written by a robot
