In recent weeks, a series of new TV spots for Star Wars: The Last Jedi have hit the web, giving us a look at some scenes that haven’t been featured in any of the trailers.
One of the most powerful scenes that we’ve gotten a glimpse of so far is the moment Luke Skywalker enters the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. We can assume that it’s been a long, long time since Luke stepped into the ship he once called “a piece of junk,” so this is likely going to be a tear-jerking moment for Star Wars fans.
Returning to the Falcon wasn’t just an emotional moment for the character, but for the actor who plays him as well. Mark Hamill recently told Entertainment Weekly that seeing the old ship was overwhelming. Hamill said his wife and three children were also at Pinewood Studios when he got his first look at the new Millennium Falcon. He went on to say:
“It was sort of like visiting an old house that you lived in when you were a kid...I mean, I just welled up with emotion and I said, ‘I need to be by myself.’”
Luke entering the Falcon was one of the first scenes that director Rian Johnson shot at Pinewood, and he says it was one of the most memorable parts of filming. Johnson said the scene caused all of the crew members in the area to just look at each other in awe. One of the most striking parts of this image is how Luke has changed since he first stepped foot inside Han Solo’s freighter. It will also be interesting to see how Luke handles Han’s death, and if he will feel responsible.
Since a glimpse of this scene was revealed in a TV spot, we can assume that it happens in the first half of the movie. What we don’t know, however, is how long Luke is going to stay on the ship, and if he’ll get to fly in it again.
