A few days ago, we found out that Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron has been completely removed from Disney's release date calendar. The movie was originally announced at the end of 2020 during a Disney Investor Day presentation, but it soon became clear that issues behind the scenes had seemingly led to the Wonder Woman filmmaker parting ways with Lucasfilm.
We're guessing it was down to good old-fashioned "creative differences," a genuine shocker when the movie was billed as a passion project for Jenkins. Something must have gone wrong, though, and it marks yet another embarrassing misstep for the studio.
Things may be starting to look up, though; according to THR (via SFFGazette.com), Lucasfilm now has two untitled Star Wars movies set for release on December 19, 2025 and December 17, 2027. Clearly, they're looking to go back to the December slot that served the sequels and Rogue One so well (Solo, on the other hand, debuted to disappointing results in May 2018).
We don't know what either of these movies are or whether they'll be connected in any way.
Rogue Squadron is off the table, anyway, so we have to assume one might be Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie, with the other being the project produced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and written by Loki scribe Michael Waldron. Whether either of them will meet those dates is hard to say, especially based on what Waititi said during Thor: Love and Thunder's recent press tour.
Honestly, with the way things are going, we wouldn't actually be surprised if that 2025 slot remains vacant. Despite finding great success on Disney+, Lucasfilm is really struggling to put a big screen Star Wars slate together.
Some might argue the franchise is better suited to television, though we're guessing the studio is feeling the pressure when it comes to making sure what they put in theaters deserves to be there.
