STAR WARS: The Next Movie Won't Be Released In Theaters Until 2025; Second Mystery Movie Dated For 2027

By the time the next Star Wars movie arrives in theaters, it will have been six years since we sat down to watch The Rise of Skywalker on the big screen. Read on for a big update on what comes next...

A few days ago, we found out that Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron has been completely removed from Disney's release date calendar. The movie was originally announced at the end of 2020 during a Disney Investor Day presentation, but it soon became clear that issues behind the scenes had seemingly led to the Wonder Woman filmmaker parting ways with Lucasfilm.

We're guessing it was down to good old-fashioned "creative differences," a genuine shocker when the movie was billed as a passion project for Jenkins. Something must have gone wrong, though, and it marks yet another embarrassing misstep for the studio.

Things may be starting to look up, though; according to THR (via SFFGazette.com), Lucasfilm now has two untitled Star Wars movies set for release on December 19, 2025 and December 17, 2027. Clearly, they're looking to go back to the December slot that served the sequels and Rogue One so well (Solo, on the other hand, debuted to disappointing results in May 2018).

We don't know what either of these movies are or whether they'll be connected in any way.

Rogue Squadron is off the table, anyway, so we have to assume one might be Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie, with the other being the project produced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and written by Loki scribe Michael Waldron. Whether either of them will meet those dates is hard to say, especially based on what Waititi said during Thor: Love and Thunder's recent press tour.

Honestly, with the way things are going, we wouldn't actually be surprised if that 2025 slot remains vacant. Despite finding great success on Disney+, Lucasfilm is really struggling to put a big screen Star Wars slate together.

Some might argue the franchise is better suited to television, though we're guessing the studio is feeling the pressure when it comes to making sure what they put in theaters deserves to be there.

Good! Star Wars should remain an event series. Television series are fine but when a movie comes out, it should mean something.

@MrDandy - that's something I 100% agree with.

@Forthas - Depends if Grogo is still alive. I bet the mandalorian twist s that he's a palpetine clone.

@Forthas - in the latest release of rise of skywalker, they added deep breathing and tien saying "I can see his parachute. He'll be ok", so I think he's doing just fine.

I think the wisest move would be a Mandalorian movie to finish the series in an epic way. Otherwise Feige’s movie is the other good bet. Otherwise keep it on the small screen for awhile and make sure that’s got good storytelling. Lucasfilm needs a story driven plan and not throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks. DC has proved that method doesn’t work.

“Some might argue the franchise is better suited to television”

And that would be wholly incorrect.

@IronGenesis - Perhaps, but most of the TV shows are pretty good and many of the films miss the mark - so it's not a surprising conclusion that some people draw.

"we found out that Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron has been completely removed from Disney's release date calendar."

Dodged that bullet!!! Patty made the worse main stream superhero film in the last 15 years. Keep DC talent at DC.

Wonder which director will be brave enough to come in and take on the entire fandom?

I'm guessing Steven Spielberg will direct the first one. I'm 100% sure of it. Or Lucas will come back to direct. Star wars needs the base to be happy and that's how you do it. My bigger concern is the script and story.🥲
