DEADPOOL Director Tim Miller Reflects On TERMINATOR: DARK FATE's Failings And Says "I Was Wrong"

Filmmaker Tim Miller has looked back at Terminator: Dark Fate, sharing his thoughts on why the reboot - which scored mostly positive reviews - failed to make much of an impact at the box office...

After helming 2016's Deadpool, Tim Miller understandably became one of Hollywood's most in-demand directors. After creative differences with Ryan Reynolds led to the filmmaker walking away from that movie's sequel, he set his sights on rebooting the Terminator franchise after the disastrous Terminator Genisys a few years prior.

Terminator: Dark Fate ended up scoring positive reviews and praise from fans, but it didn't make an impact at the box office. With only $62 million in North America and $261 million worldwide, the blockbuster was deemed a flop and seemingly put the iconic franchise back on the shelf.

That's something which isn't lost on Miller based on comments made during Comic-Con.

"Terminator’s an interesting movie to explore, but maybe we’ve explored it enough," the director said (via SFFGazette.com). "I went in with the rock hard nerd belief that if I made a good movie that I wanted to see, it would do well. And I was wrong. It was one of those f**king Eureka moments in a bad way because the movie tanked."

When the interviewer suggested that the movie, in fact, didn't tank, Miller responded by saying, "Then why aren’t people returning my phone calls?"

On a brighter note, he'd go on to add: "I think if you make a lower cost Terminator movie,  a good director and movie star could make it great. It could be made with sock puppets and it could be awesome. I’d like to do a Terminator CG."

While a Terminator video game is in the works, we don't know what the plan is for the franchise in theaters. It seems likely that it will be put to one side for the foreseeable future, though now could be a good time to bring it back to television as a streaming platform could be the perfect way to put a fresh spin on the war between man and machine.

It's a real shame that the series has been on the decline since Terminator 2: Judgement Day was released way back in 1991, but a full-blown reboot with no links to the original seems like the best possible option at this stage.

Should have stayed with Deadpool. Anyone could have told him no one wanted to see another terminator. Unless it was James Cameron directing.

A Terminator CG is something I do wanna see him direct judging from his work on Love, Death + Robots and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Anyway, good on him that he admits that things don't always go right, including Dark Fate.

Well you didn't make a good terminator movie. People were willing to give you a chance. Despite all the sh!t we had in this franchise, we were willing to give you a chance. But you blew it with effectively a remake of t2 that ruins everything accomplished in t2 to prop up your oc's. And it can't even hold up on its own.

Say what you will about Joel Schumacher, but at least he admitted his film sucked. But the ego of modern directors is off the charts nowadays. Just take the L and move on.

I mean after the meh sequels after T2 I didn't find it that much worse than those films. This franchise just got stale.

The franchise has no new ideas and like Star Wars the main conflict was kinda resolved and it ended on a satisfying note.

Miller and Cameron were both very wrong.
The smart follow up sequel to Terminator 2 is not a movie that makes these mistakes:

- Kills John Connor in the opening minutes
- Changes Sarah Connor into a bitter old, drunk lady
- Makes the leader of the resistance a waif small Hispanic girl
- Replaces the Terminator protector with some more vulnerable human female with cybernetic implants
- Replaces the T-1000 advanced terminator with a skinny Hispanic male.
- Turns one of the Terminators into a "husband" who now installs drapes thereby neutering one of the most bad ass characters.

The movie was a bad story. There characters were poorly written. The idea was trash...and they really screwed it up by turning it into Terminator: Woke Fate.

Not to mention that the story ended with the first Terminator, or should have.

@JobinJ - Well, That’s how it would sound to you.

They are Hispanic right? Or would you prefer Latinx 🙄

@TyrantBossMedia - you could just say "small girl" or "skinny male"

you didn't mention race when mentioned the protector Terminator character...

@JobinJ - You missed “Woke Fate”. The entire purpose was to cast non-white characters to replace the original characters.

Its part of the Hollywood pandering checklist.
