Terminator Salvation Director McG talks Sequels

I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a [pre-Judgment Day] 2011," McG reveals. "John Connor is going to travel back in time and he's going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion. They've figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. So you're going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be f%$^&%ng awesome. I also think he's going to meet a scientist that's going to look a lot like present-day Robert Patrick [who famously played the T-1000 in Terminator 2], talking about stem-cell research and how we can all live as idealized, younger versions of ourselves."

We all knew they were going to try and squeeze a trilogy out of this newly rebooted franchise. I have to wait to see Terminator Salvation before I can say I want another one, but just from the trailers and everything else I have seen from this movie a sequel is inevitable.

So... There just going to create a future army of Terminators & send em all back in time???

I'd send em back to some time in history far beyond presnet day... Somethin like back before Jesus was born...

Say during the middle of the 10 plagues that God was putting on Egypt... Right before the Frogs... Terminators show up everywhere & just start killing everyone... What's John Conner (Ironically also with JC initials) going to do with primitive civilizations being exterminated by Terminators??

Just saying... I love the movie & the Franchise & I understand they want to make it interesting... Just always been a head scratcher for me...

Anyone ever wonder what Sky Net would do if it won & killed off Humans???

Every time a Terminator finishes it's mission it just shuts down... What would Sky Net do if it won?? Would it just shut down everything??? Would it try to improve itself? Explore space? I mean... What's it's eventual goal??? Killing Humans can't be it.. Anyone else ever wonder about that?

Again... I love the Terminator Movies & they will always be my favorites... Just wondering out loud I guess... or on keyboards.. Lol...

I agrre, GUNSMITH...i am so pumped about seeing this movie!!! And Bale was the perfect pick for Connor... meltdown and all... its not so bad a movie year for me...

1) Revenge of the Fallen (my must see)

2) Terminator: Salvation

3) Watchmen (loved it)

4) X-Men Origins: Wolverine(eh)

5) Public Enemies (I think that might be the sleeper of the year for me)

6) some movie about people in exosuits chasing after this guy and this hot American chick with glasses that keep shooting green slime missiles at people when they scream "I don't know?!"....... I refuse to call that movie GI Joe....

Thats a good point, guys... what happens once the "bad guy" actually wins? hmmm..... I guess it would just create some new playtoys... Or maybe it would go back in time to before it went back in time the first time to arm humans with the power to fight back so that its mind would have an ongoing conondrum to solve, therefore making itself relevant eternally.... yeah .... sounds good.... problem solved.. LOL

how about they do a crossover type movie! Instead of Alien Vs Predator, we have Predator Vs Terminator! Skynet just took down the last surviving human, then Predator comes to Earth to hunt its favorite prey only to find none left just these machines. These machines prove much more dangerous prey than humans. Skynet has a new goal, killing Predators. Predators have a new goal, hunting Terminators! Bam theres your movie, makes any AvP movie look like crap.

Sorry, but this idea about John going back in time is STUPID...JMHO.

McG is going to **** this whole story up by doing that. I'm afraid that McG is going to continue to use time travel as a crutch with regard to plot development; don't do that.

If John goes back in time...what about the John already in the past??? How do you work around that?

This idea is too rediculous...Marcus, Serena, and the Hybrids is cool, but there were parts in the original script that were JUST PLAIN STUPID. Like the golf course scene IN SKYNET CITY...WTF???

I know it is still early, though. I doubt this goes down.

I can't wait for this movie, for me, it's probably the summer movie. I've loved this franchise, and it looks like McG is doing a good job on Salvation...however, I'm not a fan of this sending armies and hunter killers back in time, that would not make any sense with the earlier stories, and wouldn't work...I say, keep going forward in time

This movie looks sweet. Maybe it'll make up for Terminatior 3. That was a good movie, but it wasn't like the first two.

Maybe if they're doing three of them, they'll just end the series. Like they set out to stop this from actually happening and this time it actually works! Wouldn't that be wierd?

Midknight that Predator vs Terminator is a good idea. I would watch that.

Terminator looks intense. It looks very promising. It's a shame they pansied out and went PG-13. I want me some blood.

Keven... that scene dodging rockets at the end of the trailer was the most blatantly copy-cat moment I've seen in a while. The first thing my wife said when she saw the trailer was "didn't they steal that scene from Transformers?" What made it bad was that if it was just a stolen concept in the movie.... thats ok.... but to have it on the trailer? come on...

And I'll be there too, GUNSMITH... you know, its like watching a train wreck.... you know its going to be bad... but you can't turn your head away. I loved GI JOE, so it will be very hard for me to turn my head away!

As for Terminator,I think McG is just kinda yanking our chains with this.... i think he wants to gauge the fanboy's ire on this.... i don't think he would do anything like that...

OR WOULD HE?!! nah, probably not...
OR WOULD HE?!!

Macksimus,
I'm all about "Terminator: Salvation," but I'm completely with you here-- THIS idea sounds HORRIBLE! And for the exact reason that you just said! Too much time travel F's up everything. Then you get into the issues like the fact that... I'm not going into this again. The more you travel back in time, the more you F up the present and future. NO MORE TIME TRAVEL EXCEPT FOR SENDING PEOPLE/STUFF BACK THAT WE ALREADY KNOW OF!!! They don't need to continue with that aspect of the story. PLEASE, you are so close to making this F'ing awesome, don't F it all up now.

I JUST POSTED THIS ON ANOTHER "TERMINATOR: SALVATION" THREAD ON THIS SITE BUT FIGURED THAT IT ALSO APPLIED HERE:
I just finished reading the book Terminator Salvation: From The Ashes, the official prequel to the movie. It was pretty good and does a good job setting up the characters and giving a feel for the world which they are living in. For example, it takes into account things that we might not have considered like the fact that there are gangs throughout the cities killing each other for food and there are also mini-civilizations in old apartment buildings, etc. It also explains a little bit of the Resistance's operation, as well as Skynet's, and it explains things like why the Resistance has jets flying around, etc., since you'd think it would be very easy for Skynet to find them and take them out. It's definitely worth a read prior to seeing the movie. It's probably not necessary but it does paint a much better picture of their world and their lifestyles than what we already have so I do recommend it for any diehard fans.

@ Fartman: The idea has been used in comics, Alien Vs Predator Vs Terminator was a miniseries by Dark Horse comics. Was a decent idea I suppose though, I would much rather see just Predator vs Terminator. I personally think it would be awesome but, who knows it could be lame like the AvP movies.

You know, if you think about it, Christian Bale is an amazing actor. Not so much for his over-the-top acting skills. No. But that he is playing all of cinema's coolest heroes! He's John Connor, Bruce Wayne/Batman...what's next? Steve Austen, astronaut, a man barely alive...Gentlemen? We can rebuild him, we have the technology. We can make faster. Stronger...BETTER! Cue cool intro. theme.

Here's another question.. If they have figured out how to send anything through time... Why don't both sides go into the future to bring back more advanced weapons to the present time... Tip the balance????

I know that Keven.. I was trying to point out a flaw in the logic in bringing in that aspect into the story...

Geez... Chill out...It's not like they are going to read my post & actually add it to a movie...

Macksimus: You obviously haven't seen any of the previous Terminator movies, or have forgotten that time travell was the key element IN ALL OF THEM!

grif: (Read statement above)

Pumchavas28: You have interesting ideas. Keep posting them.

keven: "because that's stupid Pumchavas. haven't you learned that you can't just keep doing something stupid like that in a movie? this isn't the coyote chasing the roadrunner here."

You're trolling. Quit being a jerk. The guy had an idea, and wanted to share it. Plain and simple.

Come on guys, time travel is a plot device. It's not "played" out anymore than the concept of the "Heroes Journey" is played out. The writing and the acting are the most important aspects of any story. Make those top-notch, and you have an excellent movie!
And wouldn't it be entertaining to see how/why the T units were sent back in time for the events that took place in the previous films? I think that's a brilliant concept in and of itself, and if calculated correctly, will make one HELL of a good movie!

MetalHead
MetalHead - 5/5/2009, 1:25 PM
Here's the thing with the time travel: we all know what supposedly happened in 1984 and 1996 (and unfortunately in that God-awful 3rd film in 2003). That being said, the disaster to the Terminator timeline which "T3" created is EXACTLY why they need to STOP adding more NEW time travel storylines that involve John Connor or Kyle Reese. The more things that they do in the future involving sending things to the past, the more it F's up the timeline, which, in turn will eventually wipe out the existence of the events in the first 2 films. (Wipe out "T3" all you want, though!)

Basically, showing Kyle, 2 T-800s, and a T-1000 being sent back in time is perfectly fine because that stays true to the continuity of the first 2 films. But sending John Connor back in time and therefore keeping him from existing in this current storyline will no longer allow him to be around to send Kyle Reese back in 2029, making John's existence no longer possible. That is just one minor example of just one alternate timeline. IF they want to send back other characters then that's fine-- just as long as whatever those characters do doesn't end up altering the events to this particular timeline. For example, when Kyle was sent back he didn't alter the timeline from which he came, he helped to create it and to keep it possible. Although the events of "T2" COULD HAVE potentially stopped or postponed Judgment Day, there was nothing to suggest that to be true since IF they had been successful then right at that moment the entire timeline should have changed since John, both T-800s and the T-1000 never would have existed and therefore the events leading up to the moment after "T2" would never have had to happen. That being said, the writers of "T3" NEVER should have changed the date of Judgment Day since it was that specific event that allowed all of those individuals from the first 2 films to be in those specfic places at those specific times.

So here's why it's annoying... yes, it can be said that there are several timeline possibilities. BUT, in the first 2 films we were seeing the events of THAT SPECIFIC TIMELINE. So let's see the ENTIRE STORY of THAT TIMELINE! That's the story that we started with so let's finish it! Yes, there is another timeline where John never exists, but THAT ISN'T THE TIMELINE THAT WE ARE WATCHING! The timeline that we WERE watching (until that piece of trash "T3" ruined the whole timeline) has Kyle Reese & a T-800 being sent back to 1984, a T-800 & a T-1000 being sent back 1996, Judgment Day taking place in 1997 and the Resistance winning the war in 2029. Now what we're seeing is a few pieces to several different timelines/stories. Let's just F'ing see the rest of the story that we've BEEN WATCHING SINCE 1984!

Adamant...

Thanks...I did see all of the Terminator movies, and I do know that time travel is a key element in all of them, but that doesn't mean that time travel should be a key element in all of the new movies. Hell, even McG has said that there will not be any time travel in Salvation, and if they do have time travel in the 5th and 6th, it should only be when John sends back Kyle and the T-800 to intercept Skynet's Terminators.

All I'm saying is that McG SHOULDNT RELY ON TIME TRAVEL AS A CRUTCH...because if he wanted to, he could use time travel to explain every little plot hole that he might end up creating in these movies, and that would make the movie stupid.
MetalHead
MetalHead - 5/5/2009, 2:55 PM
Keven,
I'll gladly reply to your question but I don't really get what you're asking so if you be more specific and ask again (and if this doesn't answer it) then I'll respond again.

Here's what the problem is, and this is complicated and will give you a headache, but try hard to follow closely...

For the sake of explaining this point let's say that in "T1" Kyle Reese is exactly 26 years and 10 days old when he arrives in 1984. Now in order for John Connor to meet Kyle Reese and for him to send Kyle Reese to 1984 at the exact age of 26 years and 10 days old, almost all of the major events must still occur in the same way. EVEN IF Kyle arrives at 26 years and 11 days old, it is still no longer that exact timeline that we have in the first 2 films because something-- as minor as it is-- has changed. Now granted, in that particular scenerio the outcome of the story could still turn out to be identical.

So what if Kyle is sent back at 22 years old instead of 26 years and 10 days old and therefore didn't have a crucial piece of knowledge or experience that maybe he learned at 24 years old which he used to protect Sarah Connor? NOW she is dead and once again, the story that takes place in the first 2 films can no longer exist because the first T-800 never would have existed since a major part of Skynet's creation was a result of Cyberdine Systems finding its chip and arm.

AND that's assuming that Kyle would even still be alive if the events occured differently. He could potentially be killed during the new Judgment Day or he could just be hit by a car crossing the street one day.

Basically, think about it like this: there are an infinite number of timelines. But the one we were watching is no longer the same story as the one we are now watching. Could the events still happen? Sure, but not in this timeline without creating a paradox. I'm not saying that Judgment Day couldn't be postponed. What I am saying is that IF it was, the characters who arrived in 1984 and 1996 would almost definitely never exist due to the fact that the world in which they came from would no longer exist either. A similar world could/would exist, but that doesn't mean that in that world the events would perfectly align in the correct way again to bring Kyle Reese, age 26 years and 10 days, to 1984.
