Vin Diesel And David Twohy On More RIDDICK Movies

The box office numbers for Chronicles of Riddick were disappointing to both Universal and the film's creator and star. With Riddick, which Diesel and Twohy view as a stand-alone feature, they hope to get the franchise back on track. Said Twohy, "At its core [Riddick] is a survival story about one man, and his only way to get off this planet is to call in the mercenaries for a ride. That said, we don’t turn our backs on the mythology that we planted in the last movie, and we are actually bringing Karl [Urban] back for a few days of filming
to advance it and lay the groundwork for movie four. We’re concerned with paying off the loyal fans and think that if somebody doesn’t understand something the solution is to look at the other two movies and get up to speed. It does play in a gratifying way as a standalone movie, but there are threads that we continue to sew that we started in previous movies and will continue in future movies."

In terms of where the franchise heads next, Vin Diesel adds, "You’ve got to go to the Underverse. It’s expected, it’s something I firmly believe. You’ll have to go through the Underverse to get to Furya. So, those are the two further stories that are mapped out. The Underverse is a much more costly venture. We went this direction, trying to do an R-rated movie, which is cool and even more interesting because it’s so unexpected. But yes, you will be at the Underverse and you will be at Furya sooner or later." Riddick will arrive in US theaters on September 6.

Karl Urban And Vin Diesel Reunite In Latest RIDDICK Still

The latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000′s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

I agree with you 100% not a 110% because that would be impossible.

To be honest...I haven't seen Chrocicles of Riddick yet...but Pitch Black was awesome.

I've been a fan since Pitch Black, and liked how Chronicles tried to break the mold, and set a mythology. I think going back to that is smart though. I also liked the animated film they put out right before Chronicles, and would love if they did one (or a game) that bridges the gap between Chronicles and this.

Riddick looks like a fun movie and exactly the same as Pitch Black. I actually like Chronicles Uncut and enjoyed it was trying to do, even though it didn't work good with critics. But I'm meh about doing more sequels.... Vin Diesel is really having a hard time finding other roles, lol. Fast movies and Riddick are the only ones..... I'm not really counting Groot in GoTG since all he is doing is voicing 3 damn words, lol

This looks way better than Chronicles, I like that they're trying to expand it, because I love the character. But Chronicles was a swing and a miss. Get it back on track and then try to go grander but in a much smarter way.

I may be in the minority here but to me Pitch Black wasn't successful becaue of Riddick. It was successful because of the interesting planet and the creatures that lived on the planet.

I would also say that the story of Fry (Radha Mitchell) and Johns (Cole Hauser) were the center of the movie. Fry's decision to jetison the human cargo and John's shadiness were crucial to the story. Riddick was the twist in that he became the suprise hero of the piece. Making the Chronicles of Riddick is akin to making Iron Man 4: The Trevor Chronicles. It was unnecessary.

I would rather see a prequel involving the settlers on the planet or one dealing with Fry and Johns. I really think people or just the director and Vin have truly missed what made Pitch Black great. Sorry.

What Franchise? It was one movie and the dumb-ass studio attempted to turn it into a franchise by forcing a nonsense plot of a sequel that flopped.

Forcing another movie that's going to flop don't make this any more a franchise. A franchise is a "successful" model that is replicated, not a dead horse that gets flogged!

Pitch black was great, but like all films where the cool character is not the main character, just a supporting character, the audience convinces studios to shove them down our throats. yes im looking at jack sparrow in pirates 2, 3, and especially 4. only good pirates is the first one. lots of movies do this and its stupid as hell. these characters are much more interesting in smaller roles.

Big fan of 'Pitch Black'. Not for the faint of heart though. But bringing back 'Chronicles of Riddick' is a horrible idea, on many levels. Now I'm going to make the 'boo' face like the old lady from Princess Bride.

Chronicles of Riddick showed that there was more to the Riddick universe than him worrying bout being on a deserted planet and fighting dangerous creatures. This new movie goes straight back to Riddick being in survival mode and using who he can to live another day. I would have loved to see what Riddick could have done with the entire Necromonger force behind him.

@Nubase,

That sounds boring.

Pitch Black was really good sci-fi. Chronicles is watchable but ultimately forgetable.

Riddick was fun to watch in Pitch Black but Fry and Johns were more interesting as characters. It was cool how they flipped expectations of the hero by making Riddick and not Johns the hero. But Johns being against type was more interesting than Riddick being agains type. There is also an interesting irony in that as the darkness approached we could fully see who Fry, Johns and Riddick really were. Blah, blah, blah. I'm sure there is something. Ultimately CoR should not have been made based off of a better film.

I loved all the mythology they built into Chronicles of Riddick and I'm glad to hear they'll be touching on that.

@MCUFan1 I'm with you! Butcher Bay would rock! :)

Pitch Black made Vin Diesel a total bad @$$ in my mind. Chronicles was fun, but Pitch Black is the one that comes to mind when I think of "Riddick".

VERY excited for this one, and future films, if they stick with the feel of the original.

@Mercwitham0uth - the first quarter of the film is pretty much Vin by himself and it moves a little slowly. as soon as the bounty hunters show up, the movie gets pretty awesome. Bautista is in the group of bounty hunters. he is in a huge chunk of the film and does a pretty good job. he has a lot of funny lines, which he delivers really well, but he also kicks ass. after seeing him in Riddick, i am even more excited about GotG!!

@Mercwitham0uth - this felt a lot more like the first film, than the second. love the creature designs in this new one too. and the dialogue is awesome. but yeah, definitely when the bounty hunters show up, the movie gets a lot better. all of them are great characters.

Can't wait to see this movie from redbox. If they just jump over how he went from king to this I will be mad. Depending on how good the reviews are I might go see it in theaters, but I doubt it.

I'm 50/50 on whether to see this at the cinema or not, will probably check out the reviews first. Have been checking out some of the fan art on the Riddick movie website (www.riddick-movie.com) which is pretty cool though.
