Why Haven't We Had A Remake Of THE LAST STARFIGHTER?

Did you know Steven Spielberg (Jaws) and Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express) were both interested in remaking the 1984 film The Last Starfighter? Hit the jump to find out why they were unsuccessful in acquiring the film rights.

Many of you might be shocked to learn that at one time Steven Spielberg ("Jurassic Park"), the director that gave birth to the modern day summer blockbuster, had interest in acquiring the film rights to the 1984 movie The Last Starfighter. How do we know this? Seth Rogen ("Neighbors") revealed the information via Twitter four days ago.

See, we all know remakes of classic '80s movies are the current craze in Hollywood and when you think of which films from that era might get remade, The Last Starfighter is usually brought up at some point. This happened four days ago, and that is when Seth Rogen jumped into the conversation to reveal that he and Spielberg, separately, had tried to acquire the film rights. Sadly (or not so sadly), they both came up empty handed.

So what's the hold up?
It seems the film’s writer, Jonathan R. Betuel, retains the rights to all remakes and sequels. According to Rogen, he has absolutely no interest in anything happening with the film. That’s unconfirmed, but you have to imagine pretty accurate. Especially if arguably the most powerful man in Hollywood couldn’t get the rights. - Slash Film

Would you like to see a remake of The Last Starfighter? Or, should they leave the original alone?

The Last Starfighter (1984) - "Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Kodan Armada." So begins an adventure of galactic proportions in The Last Starfighter. After Earthling Alex (Lance Guest) conquers the Starfighter video game, he is recruited by alien Centauri (Robert Preston) to be part of an elite legion of fighters. Leaving behind his trailer park home for the outer regions of space, Alex becomes the last hope for the beleaguered Star League and hundreds of worlds – including Earth. The Last Starfighter is the ultimate video game fantasy come true!

Not sure it was a hit when it came out? There was no sequel, don't remember any talk of any one wanting one. But, those were different times. Hollywood nowadays is only bold in the bedroom, not the boardroom. They need fresh ideas.

Not a hit but more of a cult classic.

Not a fan of the movie but in today's world with the masses loving gaming it would be a cool premise for a new film.
Instead of an arcade game, home game systems worldwide would play the Starfighter game & discover who on Earth could become a real Starfighter to battle an invading alien armada. Cool.

What about Logan's Run? Westworld? The Andromeda Strain? Soylent Green? And Spielberg doesn't need to do any more rushed remakes such as War of the Worlds. As for Seth, stick to that crap you call comedy.

I love it when I hear that some creators were smart enough to hold onto films rights and they exercise restraint in not cashing thus encouraging Hollywood to stay creative. Imagine if Universal had the sole rights to Back to the Future and Robert Zemeckis has no veto power over sequels or remakes? We would probably be 'enjoying' Robert Pattison as Marty McFly and Will Farrel as Doc Brown this very thanksgiving.

Get that image out of your head.

I would want it to be dark and gritty and grounded in reality. Is Josh Trank available?

Because The Last Starfighter is a movie that actually deserves to be remade, and if Hollywood remade it; then they would have no excuse to remake the classics anymore.

Is the writer crazy out of his mind? Think of the money he must be turning down.. Jeez.

Probably for the best. Most remakes usually end up sucking.

No need to remake it. It's fine as is.

I honestly don't want to see a stoned/slacker Rogen in space giggling as he foolishly shoots up spaceships probably while accidentally sitting on the control switch.

I'll just re-watch the original.

I know right?

He must care about his creation and have something that is in short supply in Hollywood that is actually more valuable than selling out your vision for money.

Artistic integrity.

That or he's seen most of the remakes in the last ten years or so.
It really is a right turn off.

Maybe I'm a minority here but this film was really bland IMO.

But the girl was cute.

Everything else was just kinda bland. I really liked the plot actually. It's just it wasn't executed to it's fullest potential. IMO.

But I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.
