Zachary Quinto Talks Star Trek Sequel!

The actor behind Spock in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot talks about the film's upcoming sequel, Spock being one of the few Vulcans left, and more...

Speaking to io9, Zachary Quinto - perhaps best known for his portrayal of 'Spock' in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot - talks briefly about where his character journey could go in the sequel, while praising director Abrams and producer Damon Lindelof. He also confirms that the romance story will likely stay alive in the sequel, while talking a bit about the number of Vulcans still alive after the race was almost completely wiped out in the first film.

Where do you think your character is in the second film, where do you think his character journey is going?

I wonder about that. I would imagine (this is just speculative), his planet's been destroyed, he feels a real imperative to rebuild his race. But he's in love with a human. There's probably some potential conflict in that dynamic, I would not be surprised, and I would be intrigued and excited by that if that were the case. Again, I have such implicit trust in all of those guys: Damon, Bob and Alex, and J.J. I feel like they're going to take us where we need to go. And we're going to follow them whole-heartedly.

Do you think they'll keep the romance story alive with you, and do you want them to?

I do think [so]. I don't see how they could just drop it. It may be fraught, I don't know!

Where is Spock now? He's one of the last few Vulcans.

He's not the only Vulcan, I think I said, "Of my planet's nearly 6 billion inhabitants, approximately 10,000 have survived." He's not the only one. But the odds aren't great. He has a bit of a cultural imperative to [help].

Would Spock really seek out more Vulcans, especially since he turned his back on their culture previously?

He turned his back by choosing not to go to the Vulcan Science Academy, but his culture has always been a very important part of who he is. It's an integral part of his internal fabric. I think if he's wrestling with feelings of guilt for having sort of embraced his humanity, then an event like this is the great equalizer, it levels the playing field. I don't think he's going to spend too much time feeling guilty. I think he's going to spend a lot more time doing the logical thing. Which is to help repopulate, help support, and help rebuild the race of people. His father was full full Vulcan, and he has a responsibility there, and he loves his father very much. I don't think he's that torn about it. I think he's done the best he can to straddle a really complicated circumstance.

What other questions do you have about the next film? What are you excited for?

I'm interested to see what the villain situation is. What are we fighting against, what is our mission? That's going to be really cool for me. I'm really excited to see the direction in which they take my character in general. I'm excited to see when this movie takes place, in juxtaposition to when we ended the first one. Where do we pick back up? What's happened to the characters since then? My sense is what's the dynamic like between Kirk and Spock? Is it all smooth sailing? I imagine that they're both so strongly willed, that there will be some continued friction... I'm just excited to read it and shoot it.

Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban, J.J. Abrams' currently untitled Star Trek sequel hits theaters sometime in 2012/2013.

For pity's sake, just drop the whole Spock/Uhura roomance. It makes no sense whatsoever. It was Nurse Chapel that had it bad for Spock and he understood her affection but could never return it. Of course, if she's around for Pon Farr that may change.

@thereverendjonnynemo- LOL love how you prepared yourself hahahahaha

@Knightstalker- Since this is an alternate universe, I say they bring in the Q Continuum as the next opponent. HELL NO to Trelane. ;D

What are your thoughts?

And yeah I get Q was mainly from TNG/DS9/VOY but I always loved it.

Also I've always agreed with you on the Uhura front, did seem random since in TOS they never showed much feelings for each other...but i do remember Spock was going to marry a Vulcan gal. Sorry but my Trek series were ALWAYS- TNG, ENT and DS9.

As for my comment on the Vulcan-gal thing, I think in this sequel they should break up Spock and Uhura and just try to either get Spock with a Vulcan girl who might have been off-planet during Vulcan's destruction or go the Nurse Chapel route.

As for the villain-situation...I think I'm in the minority. I don't ever wanna see the Borgs or Khan in this film franchise. Khan already had his entire story told from the episode "Space Seed" in TOS to the film- Wrath of Khan.

Using Khan as the new threat would only seem like lazy-writing on their part and would kind of...ruin what they were initially going for with the first film- a COMPLETE reboot. I mean, Nero was a new concept which worked out great. Why not try that type of idea again? That or use a classic TOS character that hasn't been used quit as much or that the general audience wouldn't know much about- Gary Mitchell and the Talosians come to mind.

The Gorn could be cool with todays modern tech. They at least wouldn't look like cheap, party-city costumes. And as i stated earlier- the Q Continuum would be awesome!!!

I just never wanna see the Borg or Khan ever again. I don't get why everybody always chants for those two. I have friends who've never watched Star Trek and the only villain they know are the Borgs. So naturally they call for the Borgs to be in the movie. Little do they know there are soooooo many other villains to be explored in the sequel. Khan needs to stay with Montalban. Come on Abrams...give us a new villain. ;D

Damn guys...I just read about the "lost cameo scene" for Shatner in the 2009 Trek film.

It sounded really beautiful...I can't believe Abrams didn't include it. I'm not the biggest fan of Shatner but his Kirk was the best thing about TOS...better than Nimoy's Spock to me. At first I got annoyed with Shatner about his rants regarding leaving his absence from the 2009 film but now...after reading about his lost-cameo, I'm kind of pissed at Abrams for taking it out. It seemed really, really beautiful. Kirk's holographic image (yeah Star Wars i know) talking to Young Spock (though referring to Spock Prime in his message) and just talking about their journeys...their trials...singing Spock happy birthday. Showing the new Kirk (Chris Pine) accepting his duty as Captain, then ending the film with Shatner's Kirk saying

"Admit it, Spock. For people like us, the journey itself…is home"

I wish they at least filmed it and released it online or in the DVD release. Beautifully written scene.

Well they should of continued after Nemesis. Could of came up with a brand crew & story line. I really hate the alternate continuity.

Obviously the most logical thing for Spock to do is break up with Uhura. He is now part of and endangered species, and repopulation is gonna be his main goal. You thought Kirk was a womanizer. Look out for Spock 2.0!!

The Borg should be a villain in this new Trek series, mainly because Nero's ship was using Borg technology and signals from that tech could have been picked up by the Borg, forcing them to come out to the Alpha Quadrant to investigate.

For that info, read the Star Trek prequel comic from IDW. :)
