Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now playing in theaters, and director Destin Daniel Cretton has been doing the rounds to promote the latest Phase 4 adventure.
During a recent interview with Collider, the filmmaker was asked about the Master of Martial Arts' power-levels and whether they were on the same level as the likes of Thor and The Hulk. Without naming any specific characters, Cretton suggested that by the end of the movie, Shang-Chi is "standing on a similar level" to the most formidable heroes in the MCU.
"It depends if you're talking about the beginning of the movie or the end of the movie," he said. "I think by the end of this movie, I think, he is, you know, standing up on a similar level to some of our favorite superheroes in the MCU. For fun, we've debated things but I don't really know the answer to it. But I'm sure we'll explore them in the future."
Spoilers follow.
As Cretton alludes to, Shang-Chi's power-set is on a whole other level by the time the credits roll. While "Shaun" was already a lethal warrior, the character appears to tap into the mystical energy of Ta Lo after training with his Aunt and is able to wield the same abilities. Add the vast power of the Ten Rings to the equation, and it's easy to envision Shang-Chi going head-to-head with any of his (soon-to-be) fellow Avengers.
Will we actually get to see those kind of battles take place? Well, Shang-Chi is a pretty easy-going guy so we can't imagine him picking any fights with his fellow heroes, but if Bruce Banner was to revert back to a more smash-happy version of The Hulk, you never know!
