SHANG-CHI Passes $400 Million Worldwide As VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE Already Nears $200 Million

It was a big weekend at the worldwide box office for both Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, so find the latest numbers for both Marvel movies after the jump...

No Time to Die arrived in North American theaters this weekend (we'll have more on that for you later), but it's also been a big few days for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. After just 10 days of release, the Venom sequel has earned $143 million. That's higher than Black Widow in the same time-frame and just $1 million less than Shang-Chi.

Now, according to Forbes, Venom: Let There Be Carnage has earned $186 million worldwide. That means it's just days away from hitting $200 million, and while a China release isn't currently planned, there's a good chance Andy Serkis' follow-up will continue to exceed expectations moving forward.

As for Shang-Chi, the Phase 4 release has just hit another benchmark at the global box office with a $400 million haul.

$212.45 million of that comes from North America, and that international cume is not to be sniffed at considering the Marvel Studios movie looks set to skip China. Regardless, Shang-Chi has become the first pandemic era movie to hit $400 million globally without a boost from the Middle Kingdom.

Had the movie been released there, it's entirely feasible it could have earned a good couple of hundred million more. However, past comments from Simu Liu about the country and what many there consider to be offensive stereotypes has seemingly closed the door on that ever happening.

What did you guys decide to watch on the big screen this weekend?

Seems like the GA like the taste of SPUMC 💦 👀

@LetThereBClunge - Honestly, I feel like this shows that the GA just doesn't know enough about the character to know how bad the movie is, and poorly the character is represented in it.

@CorndogBurglar - nah people just enjoy what they enjoy. A lot of people liked the first and now they're showing up for the sequel. GA love action and comedy it's a winning formula.

@LetThereBClunge - It fell 64% in its second weekend

@lordSTALE - 64% is a normal/okay drop, so its not that big of a deal, now if it had a 74% drop then now we have a problem

lordSTALE - 10/11/2021, 1:56 PM
@eagc1995 - No 58% is a normal second weekend drop, 65% is terrible

Suicide Squad 2016 fell 67%, BvS fell 69%. MCU movies typically fall 55% or less

@lordSTALE - Yeah a better result would be in the 50%, though Ant-Man 2 also fell in the early 60% digits, but still went on to go good business, despite the huge drop.

I do agree in general the number in which Suicide Squad and BvS did is bad, like how it happened with Black Widow, which also fell in the same number as those two films

Now while Venom 1 drop was lower in its 2nd weekend given what it made in its opening weekend (55%), it still made close to what Venom 2 made (Venom 1 35M. Venom 2: 32M), so Venom 2 could still make a profit if it has good legs for the next few weekends

You mean the “CCP” claims there are offensive stereotypes. The government and its party leaders are thin skinned people can’t handle any level criticism. No such thing as a good honest debate.

Venom part two felt like a Raimi superhero film, I just can’t decide if it was more like the first two Spiderman movies or the third one, but I will say and a lot of Jokes fell flat, but a lot of them landed as well. And it’s like the movie was dumb but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun, and when carnage first shows up, it’s pretty wild. But then he does a move that didn’t fit him, and that he doesn’t capitalize on later.

SPOILER
Shriek should have had a symbiote too, dang it.

@TheWalkingCuban - Venom 2 is nowhere near the quality of SM2. How dare you
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 10/11/2021, 12:01 PM
@ThorArms - not quality, the quality is way off, but the cheese, that was close. Think of MCU humor, the quality stuff is like Iron Man’s build a bear joke, the cheese is Thor hitting himself with that bouncy ball on Ragnarok. Not comparing quality to quality but cheese the cheese, and venom did not have MCU cheese, it had Raimi cheese. Venom quality was more like Gunn in general, whether gotg or TSS, when it hit it hit.

This doesn't necessarily seem like a great thing, the way I am reading it. It is basically saying that these box office numbers are heavily front-loaded. I mean, box office is usually front-loaded, but these numbers seem even more so. Can Venom 2 reach the $800 mil that the first one made, at this rate? Shang-Chi is a weird case. It could make more than something like Ant-Man, but probably should have earned closer to Doctor Strange's final numbers, based on fan response. Not opening in China certainly didn't help... It certainly doesn't feel like things are quite "back to normal" yet.

eagc1995 - 10/11/2021, 7:24 AM
@Cozo11 - Given we are in a pandemic, dont think we should expect this to make more than the first film, but if it able to make 400-600M at the very least, then its good for the climate we are.

Though we also have to keep an eye if the Venom does land on China or not as that could always given the movie a boost in the BO if it does come out there
