Zachary Levi Explains How He Gained 20lb In A Month To Prepare For SHAZAM

Zachary Levi has gained a lot of muscle to play the God-like Shazam, and in a new interview, the actor has revealed the lengths he went to in order to take on the role of the iconic DC Comics superhero.

Recent photos of Zachary Levi have made it clear that the actor has gained a significant amount of muscle for upcoming DC Comics adaptation Shazam but how exactly did the actor bulk up for the role?

During a recent interview, Levi revealed his routine and it sounds like his workout routine was pretty intense, particularly when it comes to the diet he had to adopt in order to change his body in a big enough way to make it so he looked like a superhero! Here's a transcript explaining his process:

Levi: I’m working out like 5, 6 days a week … Depends. Sometimes we’ll do two-a-days and then more off days, but typically we’ll do an hour-and-fifteen-minute sessions every day.

You’re about 215 now?

Levi: 220. Before I got the role, I was about 200 pounds. I’ve hovered around 200 pounds most of my adult life.

You’ve gained 20 pounds in a month?

Levi: Yeah, about a month and a half.

How many calories a day?

Levi: 3,700 calories, then with a bunch of other supplements like fish oil, Omega-3s …

What are you eating?

Levi: It’s pretty clean and lean.

Does someone make your food?

Levi: Oh yeah, I do meal delivery. It’s part of the job. They [DC / Warner Bros.] have been very good to me when it comes to taking care of this.

Earlier this week, Warner Bros. released the full cast list for Shazam alongside an official synopsis. While some fans initially appeared to be quite sceptical about the movie - which was supposed to come after Black Adam, not before - the tide now appears to be changing and excitement is building. With production under way, we'll hopefully get a first look at Levi suited up as the hero very soon.

What do you guys think of the actor's remarks here? As always, share your thoughts in the usual place.

20 pounds in a month? Hah! I can gain 20 pounds in a meal.

Also... mega-steroids.

@Spock0Clock - His personal trainer gave him vitamins.

By now, everyone should know that these actors are on roids.

A month to prepare?

20 pounds of muscle?

Go to hell.

@MaximusTheMad - It can be done. In fact, a perfectly plausible, and oft recorded, scenario is when new lifters start, they make gains quickly.
Also, he has gained 'mass', not all of which will be muscle.
A person who has access to elite level trainers, nutritionists (and others preparing your food for you!) coupled with no other commitments, so complete focus is assured can attain these figures within the stated time frame.

@Stealthduck - I gained something like forty pounds over ~3 months lifting and eating heavy. Definitely a lot of that being muscle. So, being professionally trained, I can see it.

But I'll still bet folding money he's taking "vitamins".

@Spock0Clock - I understand the cynicism from some, scepticism, even based on first hand knowledge.
As you asserted, first hand knowledge of your own can account for some impressive numbers. Now, if you can empathise a situation like this, where working out is your sole responsibility (no job getting in the way, everything laid out for you, just jump in and do as you're told) and we could all have 'Hemsworthian' physiques!

Hey, he could always ask Black Adam for some advice, look at Hugh Jackman, he listened to The Rock and became Huge Jackedupman! :P

@Doomsday8888 - I remember that artile from The Wolverine. Turns out Jackman wasn't eating enough for all the workouts he was putting in. He ended looking super-ripped.

Aqua-man and Shazam....never before has a production company been so dependant on 2 stand alone movies. WB is on the brink of implosion with regard to the DCEU , if either of these flop then it's curtains !
KillerCroc357
KillerCroc357 - 2/7/2018, 2:24 AM
@emeraldtaurus - Not really. Because it is part of the larger studio umbrella of film franchies, WB isn't dependent on just DC movies. If anything fails, they reshuffle the leadership and keep trucking along.

That's probably one of the problems of the past. WB execs can just shrug these things off, and count on another franhise to cover the loss.

@KillerCroc357 - Yes, that's why I said the implosion was "with regard to the DCEU".

I still have faith in Aquaman because James Wan laid down the law early on when he almost walked away. And with Shazam, this diector seems perfect for the comedy/action focus.

@KillerCroc357 - I badly want for both movies to do well.....but I think it's safe to say, at this stage, we shouldn't get are hopes up! That's all.....

I think it speaks volumes when most high fitness guides predict it takes three months to gain 20 pounds of muscle. Official body building forums put it at two months minimum.

Steroid usage is definitely a factor here.

@Scarilian - I have tackled this in an earlier reply, so forgive my 'copy and pasting':

It can be done. In fact, a perfectly plausible, and oft recorded, scenario is when new lifters start, they make gains quickly.
Also, he has gained 'mass', not all of which will be muscle.
