Garfield Vs. Maguire: Who Was The Better Web-Head?

Peter Parker versus Peter Parker: My thoughts on who the better man is...

Just ten short years after Tobey Maguire’s first film as everyone’s favorite web-slinger, Andrew Garfield took over the role. After the tragedy of Spider-Man 3, I was so freakin’ excited to hear about a new Spidey film in the works. Each actor delivers a very different version of the same character. This article will only be based on the origin films (ie: SM1 & TASM1). I'm gonna keep this short...

ANDREW GARFIELD:

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) starts off with Garfield, a confident, somewhat cocky version of Peter Parker. He sort of reminded me of Tony Stark, minus the money, girls, and armor. Sure, Andrew’s Spidey joked around with the bad guys and all that, but none of his jokes were funny, so how is that a good thing? He was over-confident before he got his powers, and still the same after. Remember that scene with the car thief? The “small knives” scene? Yeah, he was being a dick there. I mean, I just wanted to slap him across the face right there. He was pretty much the exact opposite of Tobey’s Spider-Man. Now, fast-forward to the end of the movie, after Gwen’s dad gets killed. Why wasn’t Peter there to support Gwen at the funeral? And then he breaks Captain Stacy’s promise and decides he wants to get back together with Gwen. Are you f*cking kidding me?! First you ditch her in her time of need, then you say “don’t worry baby, we’ll get back together in the sequel.” Yeah, I REALLY like you now, Pete! (< That was a joke.) That guy getting beat up by Flash at the beginning of TASM1 reminded me of Peter Parker more than Andrew did. I'm not even kidding...

TOBEY MAGUIRE:

Spider-Man (2002) begins with Maguire, a shy, nerdy teenager, who’s in love with the girl-next-door. From the start of the film, before he becomes Spidey, it’s absolutely clear who this guy is. You can easily see how Tobey portrays a bullied weakling who can’t really stand up for himself. His version of Peter Parker is a very likable, innocent teenager, almost like a character from the 1960′s. (< See what I did there?) And even when he does get his powers, he doesn’t start fights with everyone for no reason, unlike Mr. Garfield. When he finally goes on that first swing, the audience is right there with him. I mean, you really want this guy to succeed at being a superhero, whereas you sort of want Garfield’s Spidey to fall face-first into the pavement, due to a web-shooter malfunction. At the end of SM1, Peter tells MJ that he can’t be with her, for obvious reasons. That clearly shows how he understands the meaning of responsibility, and that he knows not to get his loved ones involved in his superhero life. He did not need anyone to TELL him to stay away from her...

THE VERDICT:

The thing that makes a good movie is when your main character becomes a different person by the time the credits start rolling. Tobey’s Peter Parker was an entirely different guy at the end, whereas Andrew’s hadn’t really changed that much. I had extremely high expectations for TASM (2012), but it did not deliver. In short, I'll say this: Tobey's PP/SM was very likable, while Andrew's was sort of a dick. But the writing is to be blamed for that.

Tobey Maguire clearly gets the win from me.

Thanks for reading,

Say what y'all want about Maguire. I think he portrayed a great Parker.

He reminded me of Peter from the old comics. A true nerd through and through. Not this whole "hipster silicone valley geek" thing.

Garfield is a better Spidey, Maguire was a better Peter Parker.

Andrew: Better Spiderman but terrible Peter Parker

Tobey: Great Peter but poor Spider-Man

Hard to say. Neither of them or on a RDJ/Jackman level in terms of owning the role.

I guess I'd give the edge to Maguire; Garfield vastly improved in the role in TASM 2, but I consistently liked Maguire's performance.

Nah, but seriously, I'd have to give Maguire the role of better Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Garfield improved a LOT, but still needs to improve even more.

Garield is the definitive Spidey/Peter to me

Maguire played Peter Parker/Spider-Man perfectly. As Parker he was a geek and bullied but as Spider-Man he was heroic and witty when necessary. Garfield however plays Parker as a hipster whose actually not that nerdy and in reality would be popular. As Spider-Man Garfield is almost too witty making him just a douchebag in a costume.

Maguire is a good comic portrayal of Peter/Spidey. Garfield plays an interesting take on Peter and is a pretty good Spidey. Sony doesn't want to make it the same in a reboot, so a different take on Peter spices things up a bit.

But yeah, Garfield!

Garfield is perfect as Spidey and Peter. Tobey wasn't a good Spiderman at all. He was okay as Peter. Garfield knocks it out of the park, especially when opposite Stone.

Garfield's Parker is much more like Ultimate Peter, Maguire is more of an original character. I didn't like the Peter Parker that Maguire played as I grew up on USM and Garfield's clicks a lot better than the other.
I think that the original trilogy had a better cast though, as much as I love Dane Dehaan, James Franco was a brilliant Harry.

When I first saw the title I was sure that FreedomFreeLife, my Moriarty, had returned. I would be interested to hear what he thought about TASM2.

Oh, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. My opinion is: two good Spidermen, two decent enough Peter Pakers, if forced to pick...guess I'm going with Maguire.

I liked tobey's peter but his spider-man had no personality so its not like he transformed into a different character like bruce wayne and batman. While andrew's peter and spidey were similar, his spider-man is awesome. Andrew for me.

i think Tobey's spider-man made three jokes in the whole trilogy.

Maguire > Pretty boy.

Sure, Garfield made better quips but I'm pretty sure telling jokes isn't as important as having actual character development and actually learning something and actually....BEING A HERO.

Let's not forget Maguire was much more badass than Garfield, people call him a pussy. Did you see him take bomb to the FACE?? Did you? Did you see how bad of a bearing he got from Goblin and still came back?

But then again, it's not really the actor who made it better. It's the writing, Garfield would've been just as good if his writers knew anything about filmmaking.

Spidey from the USM comics was actually FUNNY, unlike Andrew's Spidey.

@HenryT212 so are you trying to say tobey's spider-man was funny?
Artsa94
Artsa94 - 5/29/2014, 4:26 PM
@Highflyer:

No, but that's b/c they didn't TRY to make Tobey's SM funny. They tried to make Andrew funny, and failed miserably. None of his jokes were funny at all. I felt awkward for him. At least Tobey's "here's your change" line was somewhat funny, and still funnier than anything Andrew said in both TASM 1 & 2.

"That's a nice outfit, did your husband give it you?"

Best Spidey quip I've heard in the series so far...better than here's your change, and ALL lines from the other four movies.
GuardianDevil
GuardianDevil - 5/29/2014, 4:37 PM
Worst Spidey quip: "Whose been a bad widdle wizard?" Or whatever the hell he said...
Highflyer

@HenryT212 you are entitled to your opinion. But I found a lot of andrew's spidy jokes funny like, yo sparkles, 'a god named sparkles?' 'on behalf of real rhinos everywhere' all sounded like classic spidey to me. I especially like when he talks to his enemies as if he is winning even though he is getting his ass kicked. Like when he asked electro 'ready to give up yet?' or to lizard 'Dont.. make..me... hurt.. you!' As i said, i liked tobey but i also remember terrible jokes like 'its you whose out gobby, out of your mind.' (something only a power ranger would say.)
