Deadline reports that Ariana DeBose is set to play Calypso in Sony Pictures' Kraven the Hunter movie. She'll star alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the title role, and this marks yet another impressive addition to the project. Recently, the J.C. Chandor helmed film added Russell Crowe (potentially as Kraven's father) and Fred Hechinger as the villainous Chameleon.

In the comic books, Calypso is a love interest to Kraven and utilises voodoo powers and magic potions. She once took control of The Lizard in one of Spider-Man's most harrowing battles: "Torment."

DeBose has earned an Oscar nomination for her work in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story and actually picked up a prestigious SAG award for "Best Supporting Actress" this past weekend. Next up for her is Matthew Vaughn's Argylle opposite Henry Cavill, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson and Dua Lipa.

After the success of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony continues to expand its Marvel Universe, and Kraven the Hunter joins a slate that also includes Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson and Olivia Wilde's Spider-Woman project.

Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk wrote the screenplay for Kraven the Hunter, and the fact that the movie is attracting such top tier talent is definitely a good sign.

Kraven the Hunter will be released in theaters on January 13, 2023.

Dang she was phenomenal in West Side Story! This is gaining a weirdly good cast!

@suitekid

JC Chandor is a very good director outside of Triple 9 or whatever that Netflix movie was called with Affleck and Isaac.

Hoping he has a better second outing at a big budget action-er with Kraven.

@regularmovieguy - Oh yeah JC is great and I even liked Triple Frontier too it just doesn’t stack up to his other movies.

She was MESMERIZING in West Side Story and I think that word is rarely earned sometimes.

I know Aaron Taylor-Johnson for two things:

1) Pietro Maximoff (aka QuickSilver)

2) For having a VERY impressive manhood. (Seriously, that thing is HUGE!)

Can't wait to see her in West Side Story but I know her from Hamilton. She's mostly a dancer but the two or three lines she has and her facial expressions always made me want to see her in more.

Just a reminder that the Fantastic Beast prequels have an impressive cast too but are still bad because the studio is poorly run. This applies to Sony movie too.

How come Sony can get an amazing cast for a movie that otherwise can't get my attention at all. I'm starting to think there has to be something good about for it to have so much talent sign onto it

@bkmeijer - I’m one of those that is positive towards films until the consensus or I decide it sucks. Sometimes I agree with the consensus, sometimes I don’t, but the thing has to at least have been made. Before that, who can say good or bad?

Plenty of “experts” that’s who

@TheWalkingCuban - good point. Could work in a movie's favour though that I'm not interested at all, since it can easily be above my expectations

I wonder if we’ll see Gregor (Kraven’s mentor) in this one.

DeBose was fantastic in West Side Story and it looks like she'll be winning the Supporting Actress Oscar this year which is huge deal. I'm not too familiar with Calypso as a character but this an Sony Spider-Man spin-off and I don't have a lot of high expectations for these movies.

Sony is nabbing a lot of A-list actors and promising up-and-comers for these projects but they need to get better writers and have a concrete plan for this universe.

@TheDoctor1225 Well Gregor is Black, so I’m guessing Russell Crowe is either playing the main villain or he’s playing the father and mentor to Sergei and Dmitri.

She was so good as Maria, and she was great in Schmigadoon as well. I’m excited for her in anything

@TheDoctor1225 - It’s cool. I’m just bummed we won’t get to see the Kravinoff Family in the MCU hunting down Spider-Man any time soon.

@TheDoctor1225 - Agreed. I was really hoping to see Ivanna Sakhno play Anastasia Kravinoff. Peter has yet to go toe to toe with a villain his own age (I know she’s younger in the comics but the Snap could’ve been an easy answer to that).

Good for her I guess, even though a Kraven the Hunter Movie is still odd.
