SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Is Finally Dethroned As SCREAM Slashes Its Way To #1 At The Domestic Box Office

Spider-Man: No Way Home had to lose the top spot at the North American box office eventually, but it wasn't actually too far behind the new Scream movie! Find the latest box office figures after the jump.

Spider-Man: No Way Home has proven itself an unstoppable force at the North American box office since being released on December 17, but it was cut down to size this Martin Luther King holiday weekend by Scream. That movie earned $3.5 million during Thursday evening previews, later grossing $13.3 million on Friday with an estimated $31.5 million over three days and $36 million over four.

Scream received a B+ CinemaScore, tying it with 1997's Scream 2 as the highest grade for the horror franchise. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie sits at a healthy 76% based on 188 reviews.

As for Spider-Man: No Way Home, that's expected to have earned a total of $705 million by the end of Monday to become the fourth-highest grossing movie at the domestic box office (topping Black Panther's $700 million). As for this weekend, the threequel's estimated three-day haul is $21.4 million for a four day total of $26.75 million.

There's not much to report elsewhere, but two noteworthy flops continue to, well, flop. Simon Kinberg's The 355 has earned only $8.9 million over two weeks, while The Matrix Resurrections has grossed a lowly $36.08 million over four weekends. It may be available on HBO Max at no extra charge of subscribers, but that's an abysmal result.

Uncharted is the next big blockbuster of 2022, but it definitely appears the box office is bouncing back after a difficult couple of years (and in the midst of a new COVID variant to boot).

What did you guys decide to watch this weekend?

I didn't think I'd need a Spidey fix so quick, but I'm really eager to see what they do next with him.

I guess the next piece of news we get will probably be an announcement of a screenwriter or maybe a director. Considering what Watts delivered for them here, I suspect we'll get somebody in a similar vein (and not a household name). Feige clearly loves working with Watts.

@Spock0Clock - Yeah, considering Feige said that Spider-Man 4 is going to be a thing. I wonder if it‘s going to release in 2023 or 2024 because of Tom‘s wish to have a break

@MeAreLegend - my guess is 2024. They probably won't even have a full script and directot until later this year or early next

No surprise, horror is bulletproof

Last night in soho…

Cap1

@regularmovieguy - the marketing for that was pretty abysmal to be fair, all I saw was Edgar Wright tweeting about it. Plus the fact it was not a good movie

regularmovieguy - 1/16/2022, 11:07 AM
@Cap1

The marketing was everywhere. Not sure where you’re from but tv spots, trailers before literally any movie.

Anya Taylor Joy in her first huge movie since Queen’s Gambit.

And it was solid. I don’t think it was any more or less enjoyable than Scream although their two very different types of horror.

But ones a very familiar IP and the other isn’t. I’m sure if you looked at Scream’s ratings they wouldn’t be all that different from LNIS.

@Cap1 - most horror films preform terribly at the box office
Cap1
Cap1 - 1/16/2022, 11:56 AM
@Hulkh8liars - That just isn't true at all, horrors regularly do very well at the box office. Especially when compared to their budgets
Cap1
Cap1 - 1/16/2022, 12:06 PM
@regularmovieguy - I'm from the UK, and saw next to nothing for LNIS. Anya Taylor-Joy isn't the pull she's made out to be, and Queen's Gambit wasn't quite in the zeitgeist like people assumed it was. I've not seen the new Scream so can't talk on it's quality compared to LNIS. You're right about the built-in IP for sure, Scream guarantees numbers. But my point is that on the whole, horror films are resilient to audience dips at the cinema and consistently make good money

@Cap1 - most horror films flop. Fact

At this rate I didn't expect it to be done, so good job to Scream for surprising me.

Also, at this point I kinda hope No Way home beats Black Panther and Avatar at the domestic box office, and The Lion King and Jurassic World worldwide. It's ''only'' another 80 and 120 million respectively

That it can't hold on to the number one spot, like for forever, is proof positive that Spider-Man No Way Home sucks.

Stop it with the excuses for Matrix 4, it was one of the biggest BO bombs of all times considering its budget, and the IP's legacy.

Anyway, impresive NWH beat Black Panther's domestic record, but I think Uncharted is gonna flop...badly.
