Andrew Garfield Talks More About Playing Spider-Man In The Reboot!

Check out what the actor had to say about Tobey Maguire, preparing for the role as a child, how he'll accurately portray Peter Parker and researching Spider-Man comic books...

On Hearing From Tobey Maguire And What He Thought Of Him As Spider-Man:

"I had a message from him and he gave me his blessing in a way. He said he was happy with the choice, that meant a great deal to me. It was very encouraging because I respect him so much as an actor. When I first saw his original Spider-Man my head exploded. I was blown away by his interpretation!"

On Practicing For The Role As A Kid With His Friend:

"Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words, 'With great power comes great responsibility'. This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-Man. I would be in the mirror practising his final line over and over and over again, and me and Terry would diss each other's interpretations of it."

On What It Was Like To Tell That Same Friend A Few Years Later That He'd Actually Been Cast In The Role:

"He would constantly say, 'No, no', - he's this Liverpudlian guy - he's like, 'No, no, you'll never be Spider-Man. I'll be Spider-Man'. So as soon as I got the news I emailed him and was like, 'Hey dude, remember six years ago when we were talking about who would be Spider-Man? You didn't get it!' We laughed and laughed about it. But we really were obsessed with that film."

On Using His Own Life Experiences To Do Peter Parker Justice:

"I was thinking of my history and thinking of the kid at school who I wasn't as strong as, who behaved badly to a lot of people - including myself - and who I constantly tried to stand up to but never had the physical prowess to. I can be shy. But it depends on the situation and who I'm with."

On How He's Doing Research For The Role, And How It Felt To Get It:

"I'm really getting back into the older Spider-Mans now. I used to collect comics and I have a lot of them. I was a child so I couldn't afford all of them. I freaked out. I was kind of like, 'I'd better get to work right now, because I want to do this justice'."

The currently untitled Spider-Man reboot is set to be released on July 3, 2012!

At first I was sceptical about it, and he is one of my favorite actors but now I know he should do a good job.

Agreed! ^ @Salvatore
Suit sucks!

I agree with what was said earlier. Happy to see Tobey gone, with a guy who truly understands the character. I also greatly dislike the suit. It won't cause me to hate the movie, but I really, really don't like it. The guy inside the suit makes me want to see the movie.

@Superman1991, while I don't hate Spider-man 2 as much as you, I agree that the first was the best.

I'm not complaining, but it's almost like we get weekly Garfield spider-man comments. I wish some more people would be as talkative.

saw him on the sag's last nite with his pales from 'the social network'. u can tell they are aiming for the 'kid' version of spidey (rite with the quaffed hair)..i mean, garfield is skinny as a rail! at least there won't be a standing in front of the mirror, lookin at his junk and saying 'yep, big change' scene!

which makes me think, the stunt guy we've been seeing the pics of late looks a lot bigger than he is! o well

@supersaiyan- No offence but your comment is completley unjustified. You just went and stated this is a "sorry exscuse for a movie" when if you WERE a fan of Spider-Man, you'd be jumping for joy. They've not made any decision yet that spells Batman and Robin have they? They've got a fantastic and superiour cast, they have a very talented director. And don't see what your problem is? A lot of people on this site just hate for the sake of hating, it's [frick]ing tiresome, actually start backing up what you say with some evidence.

@supersayianfan1 - Dude, shut the f*ck up. You have no idea what you're talking about. You don't deserve to see this movie, which I have no doubt is gonna be awesome! So what if the suit isn't very good? We've got an AMAZING actor playing Peter Parker who seems so devoted for this part.

@Ryden

Thats pretty much exactly how I feel. People are over-reacting to the suit like insane. ITS STILL SPIDER-MAN!

The only things I see that I do not like in the suit is the red stripe down the leg and the silver "shoe" parts. But those gripes are nowhere near bad enough to justify the hate for the suit. I don't see what else there is to complain about.

The cast is [frick]ing awesome. Who doesnt like Emma Stone? Andrew Garfield was AMAZING in Social Network and Never Let Me Go

I just hope the movie blows everyone out of the water.

@ superman1991

coming from a "smallville" fan you have no idea what quality looks like.

spider-man was good if you can get pass the green goblin outfit, kirsten dunst as mj & the cringe worthy lines.

spider-man 2 the story was alright, again cringe worthy lines, dunst as mj,but the action scenes are amazing.

spider-man 3 the action scenes are good, its just everything inbetween that sucks.

I'm sick of hearing people complain about the suit. Y'know how many suits Reeve wore for the first Superman movie? about 25. We haven't even seen how it will translate on film yet. We've seen mostly pictures taken from a fan. So people seriously need to chill out.
Bandrews1
Bandrews1 - 1/31/2011, 12:59 PM
I honestly think he's passionate about the role and I think he'll be a better Peter Parker than Tobey Maguire even though I still think Tobey did a great job. @Vermillion I agree.

LOL @ people judging it before it's even out, before it's done, before they've seen it.

it must suck to go through life, cynical and angry like that.
