Andrew Garfield Talks THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Franchise: "I Couldn't Rescue Those Films"

You know, the more we hear from Andrew Garfield, the harder it is not to feel sorry for the former Spider-Man. Here, the actor emotionally reflects on surprising fans at Comic-Con by dressing up as the wall-crawler and why he tried his best to save the now abandoned franchise...

Promoting his new movie 99 Homes, Andrew Garfield has inevitably been asked a lot about the time he spent playing Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise (he recently revealed whether or not Marvel Studios asked him to reprise the role). In this latest interview, the British actor was quizzed about what he learned from being Spider-Man, and his response is very telling, especially when he touches on what went wrong with them. You can tell he's being careful with what he says - he likely doesn't want his career going the same way as Josh Trank's - but it doesn't sound as if Garfield was any happier with how The Amazing Spider-Man 2 turned out than fans!

Well, nothing, because I was never Spider-Man. Because Spider-Man's a fictional character. He's not real. [laughs] You know what's funny, to give you the vulnerable answer, I thought I was going to be Spider-Man, you know? I went into it going...ego shit came in. It's like, "Okay, here it is. I'm f***ing Spider-Man. I f***ing made it." All that shit. [laughs] I didn't actually make it. I was never Spider-Man.

I was the actor that I am. The person that I am. Struggling with trying to match up with something that I'd elevated so high in my mind. Elevated beyond what I could attain, what I could achieve. The great thing is, that's what Peter Parker was doing as well. Peter Parker created this symbol that he couldn't live up to. It was never enough. He never felt enough, and I never felt enough. I never felt like I was able to do enough. And I couldn't rescue those films...even though I didn't sleep. [laughs]

And I wanted to...not to say that I needed to rescue those films, but I couldn't make them as deep and soulful and...life-giving as I could ever dream. And I'm never gonna be able to do that, with any film. It was especially difficult in that situation because...well, just because. And it was especially important because that character has always meant so much to me, and you saw that if you saw the Comic Con thing, which, thank you for reminding me about that.

When the interviewer went on to mention that he shows Garfield's 2011 Comic-Con appearance to his students to show them someone paying tribute to a character they love, the actor's response was very heartfelt. It should come as no surprise to learn that the ever clueless Sony weren't keen on his Con stealing idea to unmask as Spider-Man! "Thank you for sharing that with me, 'cause that was probably the highlight of the whole experience for me, 'cause it felt like, just me. Vulnerable. And terrified. And that could've really failed. That whole idea could've failed. And everyone told me it was going to. Emma [Stone] told me it was not a good idea. The studio said, "What the f*** are you thinking?!" And I was, "Just let me do one thing! Just one thing!" And to their credit they allowed it, and they saw that it worked. They trusted me a lot more after that, to their credit. So thank you for saying that. That was a gift you just gave me. Really." Thoughts?

I always feel like I need to give Garfield a hug.

Then I remember he's gotten so many naked hugs and mouth hugs from Emma Stone that I grow jealous with rage.

When Avi Arad's involved, only one man can save the film.

Feige can save it.

Avi already ruined the Metal Gear Solid film by hiring David Goyer to write it.

An actor saying that it wasn't his fault?

@LevitiKuz Did you notice how WB seemingly gave Goyer the boot? As soon as Chris Terrio came aboard as a writer, all the actors, and the director sand Terrio's praises. And on wikipedia Goyer is listed as a writer for BVS and JL1+2 but having nothing to do with the screenplay of BVS, as well as the two JL films. IMO he comes up with interesting outlines but sucks wiener at dialogue.

Confirmed. @dethpillow is Avi Arad.

I tend to think he mishandled the Spidey series. But then again, how much do I know? Between Spidey 3, and TASM 1+2 how much creative control did he have?

Also, there is that little begrudging voice in the back of my head that knows I should thank Arad because without him, we wouldn't have gotten Spiderman in the first place. But there is a reason Feige left his post as Arads #2 for Marvel Studios, which was essentially nothing back then but a pipe dream.

Well I hated those Films they were soul less and I may not of like Garfield as peter Parker but that not his fault it was studio and bad writing and bad directing that made those films bad. Garfield may cause his on downfall in the end but he was not wrong what he said Its just he should of never said it. I also glad to see those film had ended but I got say I have to respect Garfield for wanting do the best he could and he truly seem to really love spider-man and as a fan who loves spider-man I am glad to here that so yeah thanks for trying Andrew.

a lot of people give Garfield sh*t for not being a good Peter Parker or Spiderman or whatever, but lets be honest, no amount of acting talent could rescue those scripts, specially when the studio also interferes with the director (specially with TASM 2, even thou I like that movie on a guilty pleasure level).

Looks wise, I think Andrew was perfect as Spidey but the reason people don't seem him as being better than Tobey is how Andrew's character was written. Tobey was written to be likable, the underdog guy, the guy you cheer for to succeed. Andrew's Peter or Spidey never came off as an underdog which is probably the most important thing about being Spidey. He's a kid who's a superhero in a world full of adult superheroes. Spidey always proves how important he is & can hang with the adults.

I think if you gave Andrew Tobey's material, he would be looked at a lot better.

Hopefully Marvel will succeed. They got big shoes to fill consider even Feige said Spidey 2 is one of the best superhero films of all time. It's also better than any film in the MCU so hopefully Feige steps his game up.

He was the only good part of those movies. Story, dialog, story, story, villains... all sucked. Not his fault at all imo

He was THE Spiderman for my girlfriend. She refuses to watch any other SPidey film without him in it, lol

I'm gonna miss him too, he clearly cared more about Spidey than Tobey or this new kid Holland ever will.

i've said it before and i'll say it again.. they should have kept the actor and ditched everyone that was involved with the first 2 films. it would have been perfect.. stone was out of the way so no more goofy love story, stop leary from showing up.. make it about him and fighting the bad guys. he was the perfect spider-man and would have looked normal beside all the other avengers.. not some little kid thats going to be like when a 90 pound girl takes out a 200 pound black ops guy.. there's always a line with these movies on just how much you are willing to swallow and i don't see this kid doing better than andrew. major mistake by marvel.. now we'll have ANOTHER new set of grandparents, which already seems weird for casting to say the least. honestly i just think it sucks and they should fire the kid, cut his part out of cap 3 and bring back garfield for infinity war.. simple! they almost didn't have michael j. fox in back to the future! anything can happen!

@frozendiamondz I'm a huge emma stone fan but she never felt right for Gwen. She would be a perfect mary jane, but Gwen wasn't quite right for her. Of course I'm still waiting for a comics accurate mary jane too. Kirsten dunst's version of the charger had more in common with Gwen than it did mj.

Goddammit Andrew, stop trying to pull on our heartstrings and actually make us feel bad about how things turned out!

Seriously though, if this doesn't convince anyone that the guy was CLEARLY the one person who was actually passionate about the character, then nothing will. I don't know if he came up with the idea to make Peter into a Coldplay-listening, skateboarding teenage hipster, but he apparently had a big hand in including the scene in TASM 2 where he interacts with that poor nerdy kid that he saves from the bullies - in other words, the ONE moment in the entire trainwreck where he actually acts like the hero we all know and love.

The fault of these movies lie squarely with Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Avi Arad, and Marc Webb. Emma Stone and Garfield tried their damndest, but not even an Oscar-worthy performance would've saved that sinking ship. It sucks and it all could've easily been avoided, but it's on to bigger and better things!

I don't think it was particularly Garfield's fault. I blame the screenwriters and the director. When clips from the first movie were being released, it honestly didn't look like a big blockbuster movie. It almost looked amateurish. And, of course, the second one was terrible. I also think Garfield was getting a little old for the role and am glad that the role has been re-cast and that Spidey is going to be incorporated into the Marvel Universe. I also don't believe that Garfield is going to be saddled with any blame for how things turned out, similar to the actors who were in the new FF movie.

I feel for Garfield. He would have made a great Wally West (in a more or less faithful DC adaptation, that is).

@Bulldawg2014
Same on Stone. It's a great shame that she and Garfield got tied to playing the wrong characters with the wrong emotional cores in otherwise poor films. Also Fields and Sheen, who were first class, but handled so poorly.

@ComicsBornAndBred

It's weird, because I blame them for it, too, but I just watched Mission Impossible 3 and to my surprise it's a totally fine film. The script is even occasionally quite smart, and somehow Kurtzman and Orci wrote that?...

Maybe the good stuff just came from Abrams (but even that is meaningful to me because I've not seen anything from him that's impressed me either until now). I just don't understand how these three guys could have made a totally decent film together and then gone on to make those horrible Star Trek films, or how Kurztman and Orci could be such unrepentant hacks on other projects.

He was great as Spidey and his chemistry with Stone in the first movie was rock solid. They went a bit overboard in the second movie though.
