BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Set For $37M Friday; Will It Beat CAPTAIN AMERICA?

The answer is probably not, but maybe! After predictions of a $95 million opening weekend for the Marc Webb helmed sequel, analysts are now a little less clear on how well The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will perform. However, $90 million still looks likely. Hit the jump for details!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has earned around $37 million today (including the $8.7 million taken at late Thursday night showings) and now looks set for a three-day debut of $90 million. Other analysts are estimating a far more conservative $85 million, meaning that the Marc Webb helmed sequel WON'T beat Captain America: The Winter Soldier to take the title of 2014's highest opening movie. It could still happen, but that really depends on word of mouth and whether or not families flock to the see the kid-orientated Sony movie tomorrow as the studio are hoping. It's tricky to compare this opening with 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man as that debuted early on a Tuesday ahead of the July 4th holiday weekened. Are you planning on seeing the movie this weekend? Do you hope it beats Captain America: The Winter Soldier?

If this fails to beat Cap then Spidey's in trouble. Being beaten out by 2nd tier characters? Come on, this shows how Marvel Stuios as elevated the genre by taking 2nd tier characters and turning them into pop culture icons. I mean Cap, Iron Man and Thor are at Spider-man popularity level at this point. That's a damn achievement in itself. Wow.

Spidey should have a bigger Sat and Sun. Hopefully, it gets around $100M.

And that's $37 million more than it deserves to earn. Never thought I'd say this about a Spider-Man movie, but I hope WOM ensures that this movie crashes and burns. Astonishingly bad...I still can't wrap my head around it.

Q: How is that Cap 2 made $36M on its first Friday and made $95M for weekend, yet Spidey made $37M on its first Friday, but it's predicted to do only $90M?

Just came back from watching it. What an awfully average movie. While it is not as bad as the RT score that it has so far, they aren't that far off. They need a better team to handle Spidey for part 3. Dissapointed!

The fact that MOS made 116 million$ in the opening weekend & 128 after adding Thursday 7pm Speical WalMart screening; it's just lame to see THOR & CAP coming after AVENGERS & still can't get even close!
& now even SPIDEY!

This one is excepted to make same amount of money in US as GODZILLA & CAP 2 is gona beat it by a mile & SUPES by a SuperMile!
& still Sony is hell bent on making soooo many films so quicklyly & not understanding the fatigue is getting to people!
& they're not even bothered to make a 1 GOOD FILM; instead a making prequels for next film!

It might end up making more money than Cap, but it's still a shit movie.

A few years ago would be ridiculous to think that a captain america movie could open better than a spidey film, now it's possible? Captain being a much better film.

2/5. It also didn't need to be so long. A lot of random unnecessary bs could've been cut.

Stop blaming Webb for the horrible screenplay. He didn't like it either from what I can gather.
