SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Writers Reveal Scrapped Ideas For Robert Downey Jr. To Return As Iron Man

The writers of Spider-Man: Far From Home have revealed that they did consider bringing Robert Downey Jr. back as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and shed some light on what that would have entailed. Check it out...

Iron Man was, of course, killed off in Avengers: Endgame, but he makes a brief appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home thanks to footage from Captain America: Civil War

The sequel's writers, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, were recently asked if there were ever any discussions about bringing Robert Downey Jr. in for a day to shoot a small cameo of some sort, and while they definitely considered it, it doesn't sound like it was something they were too serious about.

"I think if anything, it was always going to be re-used footage," McKenna says. "We had talked about possibly hearing Tony's voice through EDITH at one point, but I think a little goes a long way and we didn't want to lean too hard." Sommers went on to point out that not having Tony appear made more sense because it emphasised Peter Parker's feeling of loss.

"Doing the flashback like we did with Civil War is probably the most you'd want to see and hear Tony in this movie," McKenna continues. "Like Erik says, if you are doing a movie about loss, you don't want to keep going to the well. 'He's still alive and now he's a hologram, showing you around Avengers compound.'"

As cool as it would have been for Tony to show up with one final message for the wall-crawler, having Iron Man remain dead and gone makes his demise feel all the more impactful and lasting.

Would you have liked to see him make some sort of cameo, though?

Back in his homemade suit, Peter Parker swings away from Mysterio in the illusion he's created, and that actually means that each of the wall-crawler's MCU costumes were included in this sequel.

Looking like a comic book panel brought to life, Mysterio pursues the wall-crawler through a twisted version of his high school, and it's fair to say that this was a spectacular way to kick things off.

Multiple Mysterios pursue Spidey, and the amazing next shot in this sequence saw him trapped within the villain's helmet. As visuals go in the MCU, this was a definite standout.

After punching through Mysterio's helmet, the wall-crawler plummets to the floor below, but is, of course, just in the warehouse where the villain managed to lure him to. The drones are creating the illusion.

Here, we see how the "B.A.R.F." technology Quentin Beck helped Tony Stark create is able to completely change the wall-crawler's surroundings and make him see things that aren't really there.

Here, we get a before and after look at how the entirely CG sequence was created, and it's astonishing to think that everything we saw on screen was brought to life solely with visual effects.

At the top of the Eiffel Tower, Mysterio manages to convince Spider-Man that he's kidnapped MJ, but it's all part of his plan to make the web-slinger reveal who else knows about his dastardly plan.

The Multiverse sequence in Doctor Strange was pretty trippy, but this one might just have it beat. We'll have more details for you tomorrow about moments that were removed from the illusion.

None of us expected to see Iron Man rise from the grave so soon, right? This is a truly horrifying piece of imagery, and one Mysterio uses to really mess with the wall-crawler's head.

@tmp3 - Except when you die and all the people that remember you die too. At that point you don't even live in their hearts.

When that very first wave of just social media reactions hit of the initial Far From Home release, when they were letting people say a couple vague sentences about the movie but still no spoilers, when people were on about some big shocking twisty things by the end of it, I was starting to think they were going to kill off Happy Hogan as well.

I still get a nice laugh out of that "I work WITH Spiderman, not FOR Spiderman!!" :-D

Yo leave this mf dead. Remember you were a little kid and you never let go of your blanket? Remember everyone had a little blanket? That’s RDJ I’m the MCU lol...they threw the blanket away now leave it in the trash.

We got F4 and X-men. And honestly the way Shang Chi and Black Widow are sounding I’m mad pumped for phase 4. I’ve wanted Taskmaster forever so i hope it’s him. And Saturday I think Marvel will give us a lot to talk about.

This movie really failed to make you feel like you were experiencing a character suffering with loss.

He gets like one scene where he remotely expresses sadness about Tony and his 'Spider-man no more' segment where he basically states he is going to leave his Spider-man suit behind and chooses to leave it when going on Holiday/Vacation is never felt with any amount of weight.

The death of Tony Stark, despite characters asking about the 'next Iron Man' has no real effect on the MCU as presented in Far From Home. Crime does not increase despite one of the Avengers being gone. Mysterio's entire motivation is meant to be the idea of giving people a hero to believe in - but they have other heroes so it all falls flat.

It feels heavily like the MCU attempted a 'my hero academia' set-up and fell flat on its face. In the MCU Tony Stark was just 'a hero' not the 'number one hero', he may have been a focal point to the film series but this was not his story he was merely a member in the story. The world would mourn and carry on, not look for a replacement.

It'd arguably have made more sense for Peter be one of the few still clinging onto Iron Man while the rest of the world moves on - though once again they made no attempt to make him or the audience feel the weight of the responsibility or death other than vague remarks about 'being the next Iron Man' or asking him to do his job as hero which he should do anyway.

@Scarilian - Yeah, I agree with that HiTop films said about it. The film seems conflicted between being a movie about watching Peter deal with loss and being a lighthearted, fun Spidey flick. The two don't mesh well together anyway.

Glad they didn’t, would have been taking the easy way out instead of taking what they had and moving forward.

Peter is too much like Tony's Robin in this iteration.

Will be interesting to see how Rhodey is coping though
