Jon Watts Once Again Places His Confidence In Tom Holland

After several meetings with Marvel executives, Jon Watts was offered the opportunity to direct the next solo Spider-Man movie which is being co-produced with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.

Watts said,

       "It was an immediate yes."

While promoting "Cop Car" Watts told the Toronto Sun,

"You have to think about what story you want to tell, and what’s the best way to tell it,"

“The idea that there are no real limitations is exciting, but I think you have to apply your own limitations to make sure you’re telling the right kind of story."

On Tom Halland, Watts once again placed his confidence,

"It feels like he’s the right age, he has the right level of enthusiasm and a little bit of confidence, but a lot of insecurity mixed into that," Watts said.

"On top of nailing the character, he can also do a standing backflip."

What direction do you think the Spider-Man reboot should take?  Other than Aunt May who will be played by the talented Marisa Tomei, we haven’t heard anything about who else will be cast in the movie or if characters like Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, Norman Osborn, and J Jonah Jameson will make an appearance.  Who would you like to see show up from Spider-Man's rogues gallery or from Spider-Man’s universe?

The Untitled Spider-Man Reboot hits Theatres July 28, 2017

"On top of nailing the character, he can also do a standing backflip."

Well then, if we're going by these standards, let's cast Scott Adkins in every superhero role! Who cares who is Captain America, Batman, Superman, Thor, or Spider-Man! Scott Adkins can fight! He can also do a standing backflip!

Even if he could do a backflip, the insurance people won't allow it. It only takes one broken arm to throw off production for months.

I doubt there gonna hinder him from being acrobatic, I assume that's partially the reason they hired him

Marvel does solid job on finding pretty damn good directors & actors.
This could be the best cinematic Spider-Man yet.

@SuperiorMrGod Movie studios don't allow anyone on set to take unnecessary risks. One could point out Tom Cruise, but that dude has lived a full life and if he want's to do crazy stuff then let him. A young man who they need in perfect shape is different. That's why they hire stunt doubles.

Well, considering that is very reminiscent of other "qualifications" overzealous Comic Book Movie fans have often suggested, Jon Watts sounds like our guy!

I know Jon Watts was being playful here. But reading it--as a transcript--came off as very sadistic.

@DaVinci31 Did you see Cop Car? I did and it was underwhelming. I went in with no expectations and I came out thinking that it okay. It was predictable to the very last scene. He had all this build up throughout the movie but he didn't execute the climax properly.

@Kr08

I don't know, Ryan Reynolds broke his neck during a stunt while filming "Safe House", I think a lot of it has to do with what the actor/actress feels comfortable with, but they'll definitely take safety precautions.

Like Bale in the Dark Knight too, they had him wired up but that was Bale on top of the building before Batman captured Lau, I think he said something like there's no way the stunt guy is doing this one, haha

@DrKinsolving But it's completely different with someone as young as Holland. They have huge plans for him and they aren't going to risk losing or wasting any money on him getting injured. For example, on Teen Wolf, Tyler Posey's character Scott rides a motorcycle, but they have the stunt double ride it instead, even if it's for a short distance. Tyler Posey only rides motorcycles in real life.

@dethpillow "I think he's clearly talking about the actors natural affinity towards acrobatics and how that could play into him being more able to embody the Spider-Man character better,"

By that standard lets hope Hollywood hires Justin Bieber for a future Tony Hawk biopic because he has an affinity to do kick flips.

That seems really logical to me
But I guess it doesn't to you.

Go figure, right?

No, but I have been reading those types of sentiments.

And, I don't mean to be too negative here, but, I wouldn't pay too much attention to it. Marvel generally has what some would call a "standard" filter. And it functions as a bridge for those who may not appear to be suitable. Which, of course, works to lessen what fantastically capable directors could do, as well, but that is my perception, any way.

Kr08 - 8/28/2015, 8:29 PM
@DaVinci31 I didn't mean it in a negative way either. I just meant that he isn't the director people are making him out to be. But what worries me are the writers. They haven't exactly been proving their worth. Horrible Bosses 2, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2, and Vacation. Not the best track record considering they're helming one of the biggest Marvel reboot properties.

Oh, I know. I was referring to what comments I mentioned following that sentence.

That's a great point on the writers, by the way.

Holland may nail the role, but the director and writers won't.

When people don't get that the back flip comment made by Watts thing is a humorous compliment/ witicism...Watts doesn't consider that as some serious significant qualification
