Could SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Earn A "Best Picture" Nomination At The Oscars Next Year?

Spider-Man: No Way Home has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and looks set to save the moviegoing experience with a record-breaking weekend. Could that be enough to land it an Oscar?

We're still waiting on updated opening weekend box office numbers for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but all signs point to the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios movie being responsible for saving the theatrical experience. While the box office has bounced back to some extent in 2021, this is the first blockbuster to perform like a pre-pandemic release.

In Hollywood, that means an awful lot, and as well as being a financial juggernaut, the movie has also been a critical hit. As of right now, it has a spectacular 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Could that, and the fact that Spider-Man: No Way Home is arguably Marvel's best movie to date, result in a "Best Picture" nomination at next year's Academy Awards? Deadline's Peter Hammond (the trade's Chief Film Critic and Awards Columnist) believes it's possible. In his latest column, he notes that the movie is "actually good enough to be seriously considered for a Best Picture Oscar nomination."

"It will help get people back into the moviegoing experience, and maybe like the Bond film before it possibly entice older moviegoers as well, even those in the Academy’s senior demos," Hammond continues. "Saving the moviegoing experience is as important as saving the world is to Spidey....hopefully Academy members don’t snob out on us and recognize the filmmaking expertise, and pure thrills, that go into the crafting of films like this Marvel marvel."

Expertly directed by filmmaker Jon Watts with plenty of emotional moments, a superb performance from Tom Holland, and a story that serves as a love letter to the Spider-Man franchise, No Way Home is definitely deserving. You never know with the Academy, but stranger things have been known to happen.

Here's what we said in our review: "Spider-Man: No Way Home is the greatest Marvel movie ever made. Period. As epic as it is emotional, this is not only a perfect blockbuster, but Spider-Man’s wildest, funniest, and most awe-inspiring adventure yet. It's a Marvel masterpiece."

Do you think Spider-Man: No Way Home is Oscar-worthy?

As it should, but I doubt it just because of it being a “comic book movie”

@Tigerorlion07 - Yeah, too many gatekeepers afraid of embracing the change to cinema.

If they did this, it would mean that the 'old' Hollywood would have to admit that things have changed for the industry. For good or for bad...

Lmao, no. It was amazing. I loved it. But that’s not how the Academy works. Maybe it should be, I don’t know. But no way.

@Cap1 - As much as I loved Dune ( I REALLY loved it ), that film didn't manage to make me care about any of their characters as much as NWH did if I'm being honest. Thats gotta count for something.

I haven't seen a ton of movies this year due to the pandemic, but honestly this was easily one of the top 5 movies, I need to catch up on some movies that came out earlier in the year but I could see it happening.

I think it deserves but don't think it will. It's a very comic booky movie in all the best ways. Unfortunately Oscar tends to avoid that like the plague. Unless if it has some cultural impact or is animated or is the Joker.

@Urubrodi - People in Hollywood and most critics believe that the Academy Awards should go to "small" movies rather than big studio films. The rationale that I've seen most often is that indie movies don't make much money, so Oscar nominations should go to them in order to generate publicity. That will in turn cause higher ticket sales during awards season, which helps small but deserving productions.

That reasoning is nonsensical to me because it blocks great films that are popular from consideration most of the time, other than the rare Black Panther or Titanic-type of blockbuster. Quite often, nominated movies receive worse reviews than more popular ones, on top of earning far less money. The "smaller equals better" mentality is pervasive in the Academy and among critics since it validates their elitist attitudes towards popular culture.

@Shivermetimbers - dumb is an understatement. The entire movie doesn’t even work without all sorts of dumb. But the emotional beats were great and the soundtrack was phenomenal. Zendaya was awesome. Acting was great. It was the story and the MCU characterization of Doctor Strange that didnt go well for me. It’s like In all this time Strange has learned nothing at all.

@SnideCut - I guess if I had to give my opinion the whole (a best picture nod) is not the sum of its parts.  There are great moments in the film, performances, and so on.  However, moments don't make a movie when you're asking the question of does it qualify for best picture.  I've watched many comic films that have had incredible moments at this point, we all have.  I wouldn't say any one of them was truly worthy of best picture save for a few and there were some extenuating circumstances to be sure.  There have been many notable cbm's that resonate with us, but I wouldn't say we give them an Oscar for it.  The film may likely be nominated for things involved with the film and its production, cbm's tend to get those nods, but not best picture imo.  It's in the discussion with Raimi's films though, maybe better though at this point.

@SonOfAGif - I need to cheat and say 3 (There are so many scenes that I loved, this is so hard lmao)

1. Aunt May scene and the following sequences
2. When MJ and Ned were introduced to Andrew's Spidey. The bread throwing was awesome.
3. The way the 3 failed at first because two of them not knowing how to work as a team except Tom. Then proceeding to figure it out and swing together in unison.

I’ll just say it…

Dafoe might be awards worthy. And Hollywood awards suck but the man deserves some sort of statue for the gravitas he brought. He was genuinely chilling. Man was a menace.
