SPIDER-MAN Star Tom Holland Gets Candid About His Struggles With Alcohol: "It Really Scared Me"

Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted) has opened up about his struggles with alcohol in a new interview, explaining what ultimately led to him giving up completely after a "Dry January."

Earlier this year, Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland revealed that he'd been sober for over 12 months after deciding to give up alcohol completely, and the actor has now elaborated on his struggles with booze and what ultimately led to him cutting it out of his life.

During an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast (via Variety), Holland candidly spoke about coming to the realization that he may have become reliant in alcohol after doing "Dry January" (a tradition in the UK and Ireland) following a "very boozy" December.

“All I could think about was having a drink. It really scared me,” he said about giving up the sauce for one month. “I just was like, ‘Wow, maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing.'”

“I felt like I couldn’t be social,” Holland continued. “I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling. I started to really worry that maybe I had an alcohol problem.”

Holland then decided to keep going, extending his dry spell for another few months until his birthday, but by the time the date arrived, he felt he no longer needed to go back on the drink.

“[I was] the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. I could sleep better. I could handle problems better. Things that would go wrong on set, that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride. I had such better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter… I just sort of said to myself, like, ‘Why? Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?'”

Holland recently announced his plan to take some time off after a particular intense time filming Apple TV+ drama The Crowded Room, but he is expected to reprise the role of Peter Parker in the MCU at some point, and has confirmed that Spider-Man 4 discussions did take place prior to the WGA strike putting everything on pause.

You can check out Holland's interview for yourselves below.

And he's exactly right. Refreshing seeing someone with his influence say this stuff out loud

I'm no alcoholic per say but I have the exact same struggles. Drinking is such an accepted social activity. Yet fitness is important to me. I'm completely fine not drinking on a weekend but then there's a party or a wedding or whatever and the social pressure is there. Then I hate it after I do it. And it completely eliminates my gains. Have a few half marathons and marathons coming up and its devastated my training this summer. (90 degree days also don't help)

But anyways thank you Tom for speaking the truth

Respect to him for having the strength to confront and defeat his inner demons. I was never much of a drinker but in the early 2000s I did get hooked on pain pills cause of a bad back injury. Thankfully I was able to kick that habit and get the right kind of help to heal my back. 👍🙏

I only drink one night a week, but it would usually be a fair few either in the pub or at home. I look forward to it, but wouldn't say I'd miss it too much if I did give it up... but then I've never tried! Did Dry Jan a few times, but that was easy enough cos I always knew it was just short term.

I see people having fun at his expense, and I get it. Smaller site, Tom will never see it. Anonymity and what not. All fun and games. He's rich who cares, Ha ha. But alcoholism is real. I never experienced it but it runs deep especially on my dad's side of the family. I have had friends and associates barely hold their lives together because of the stuff. It goes from having fun in your college years to nudging it's way into everyday life to the point some feel as though they can't function without it.

Good for him. Hope he and anyone else who struggles can get all the support they need.

If you're making jokes and they're actually jokes, fine. If you're making jokes and mean it, go to hell.

Good on him for having courage to speak out on it so openly. Transparency on substance abuse needs to be propped up more, instead of just "OH LOOK THEY DID A DRUG NOW LIFE SUCKS".

This is a good thing. I'm happy for the young man.

It takes a lot for someone as young as him to recognize he has a problem. Hell it takes a lot for people much older than him to recognize it as well. Good for him and everyone else who does.

Good for him. I gave up drinking before I even turned 21. I just realized it wasn't for me and I was doing it to be around friends. I don't condemn anyone for drinking, but i wish more black people knew the dangers of it. They market that shit way too much to us and liquor stores on almost every corner in urban.

My drinking days came to an end at age 19, two years before I was of legal drinking age!
I got tired of not only the hangovers, but the stories of what happened "last night" that I didn't remember because I was black out drunk!
This past April was 39 years...!☮
