IMAX Corporation IMAX +1.32% CA:IMX -12.92% , and Sony Pictures Entertainment today announced that the highly anticipated 3D action-adventure, The Amazing Spider-Man, will be released to IMAX(R) theatres simultaneously with the film's worldwide release on July 3, 2012. To date, the Spider-Man motion picture franchise has generated more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office receipts. The last two installments of the franchise were also released in IMAX.

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. "We couldn't be more excited to be able to offer this extraordinary new Spider-Man adventure in IMAX," said Rory Bruer, President Worldwide Distribution, Sony Pictures Entertainment. "Marc Webb and the entire production team have been working tirelessly to deliver a 3D motion picture that will take the Spider-Man experience to a whole new level. Audiences will literally feel like they are swinging through the streets of New York and that will only be accentuated when seen in IMAX."

"I was blown away after getting a sneak peek at some early footage for The Amazing Spider-Man and this latest installment in the iconic franchise is a perfect DNA match for IMAX," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "The film is an important addition to our 2012 film slate and we're excited to be working with Marc Webb, Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and the team at Sony Pictures Entertainment to take IMAX and Spider-Man fans around the globe on this next adventure in IMAX 3D."

@Nephillim: I was thinking the very same. Most big movies go to IMAX and this is being shot in 3D so having a press conference just to announce it'll be in IMAX 3D is just redundant and pointless really. -__-

Thanks for posting anyway, Josh.

I am done watching 3D. It is not worth the ticket price. I saw Avatar, Tron and TDOTM in 3D and the only one that impressed me with the 3D element was Avatar. I felt tron would lend itself well to 3D.... but they did a poor job of it. TDOTM was just as unimpressive with it's use of 3D IMO.

If they do the 3D as good as Transformers and Avatar, I will spend the extra $$ to see it at the IMAX. I saw transformers in IMAX 3D and it was GREAT!!

This is good news! I saw the trailer in 3D when I went and seen Cap. It looked OFFICIAL!! 3D is only good in pixar-type CGI films and Movies that are shot in 3D IMO. Once again, I have very high hopes for this flick.

Yeah, we knew this was gonna happen, but at least now it's official! Personally, I'm not a big fan of IMAX (I saw Inception that way and it did NOTHING to enhance my experience) so I'll be seeing The Amazing Spider-Man in standard 'ol 3D. :)

Umm..Duh lol. Course its going to be 3D. Finally saw the trailer. Err..Garfield doesn't fit the part in my opinion. Can't get the vision of Tobey as Peter Parker.

@JoshWilding

Have u seen anything ACTUALLY IMAX? As like most things Inception was just upscaled to fit on the screen. The IMAX experience is something filmed with IMAX cameras like the 40min 3D documentaries or the portions they filmed of TDK and transformers 2.

forthesakeofnow - 7/26/2011, 9:28 AM
tho the fact it was filmed in 5K means the imax DMR process will probably look better then upscaled 35mm

Ive only seen one 3D IMAX film and that was Hubble 3D, im only going to see Spiderman there because it was filmed with the RED EPIC cameras, if it was only 35mm i wouldnt have bothered, as batman begins in imax was seeing it on a big screen and not the proper imax experience.
forthesakeofnow
forthesakeofnow - 7/26/2011, 6:22 PM
@N

none of the film with be full screen. the only reason bits of TDK were was because they filmed most of the film in widescreen 35mm which was upscaled to fit the big screen and portions of the film in IMAX 70mm which is why it suddenly turned up the quality to an insane degree and went square.

all of spiderman is filmed widescreen on 3d digital cameras.

to be honest films that are shown at an imax cinema that werent filmed in imax/dont fit the whole screen, are gimmicks, nearly false advertising.

mission impossible 4 and TDKR are the only two films i know of that are coming out will real IMAX bits.

forthesakeofnow - 7/26/2011, 6:24 PM
@N plus i wouldnt say the switching in TDK was stupid, i saw it twice like that and it didnt think it was jarring at all, if anything the normal 35mm stuff was great and the bits when it jumped up to 70mm were fantastic. rather than it being annoying every time i changed, it really worked well being the establishing shots and action scenes.
