THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: Alternate Designs For Peter Parker's Web-Shooters

One of the most dramatic changes that director Marc Webb made from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man universe, was having Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) create mechanical web-shooters. Hit the jump to check out some alternate web-shooters created by Ron Mendell.

One of the things that I enjoyed about The Amazing Spider-Man was that director, Marc Webb, decided to have Peter Parker create mechanical web-shooters. As you'll remember, in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man universe Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) produced webbing organically, a result of his mutated biology. That never sat well with me, as the mechanical web-shooters were always a great way of showing Peter's scientific aptitude, and his inventive nature.

“I had a meeting with Stan Lee and we talked about the web-shooters. I was curious about the incarnation of them [because] of course in the previous films [they went away from them] and we wanted to reestablish ourselves. That was one thing but the other thing was the fact that the web-shooters were able to dramatize Peter’s intellect and I thought that was really cool. ... It was in the comics and we have a different design but it’s a cool element to have. It’s not something we over-use or over-exploit. To me, it’s something I remember from when I was a kid and thinking ‘It would be cool if I could build those.’” - Marc Webb

Spidex3000: That's not true. Plenty of journalist use their articles to push their views. And those ones are generally only liked by peopenwhomshare their view. unbiased reporters and journalists are the way to go.

A journalist is suppose to be unbiased, that's their jobs. Don't know if Nailbaiter considers himself a journalist, if he does he might want to reconsider imputing his opinion on the article.

Yeah, when I first heard about the mechanical web shooters I was hoping for a cartridge change in mid-air. Always liked that aspect of the cartoon.

He punked a box of the webbing from oscorp ... I'm sure by the second film he will have perfected his own recipe ;)

I have a feeling with the second film it will really jump into the iconic spider-man world. Where Peter is really in his element and has been spider-man for awhile

He will clearly make better web shooters with a stronger and perfected Oscorp webbing, to go with his new suit.

He actually ran out of web in the film when he was in the sewer with the lizard

Really? When, I remember him trying to shoot them off underwater, but of course that wouldn't work.

I liked the web shooters in the film, although ultimately half way though the film for some reason I felt it was rather rushed and not as good as the first part. Maybe the sequel will be better. Doubt we'll get a proper Spider-man though until Marvel Studios has him back.

nailbiter111 - yeah i know, but if they use it too many times, it'll lose its effect.

Ok I like these some of these designs better than what they used in the movie. Why didn't they use them? Oh, right they didn't have a pointless red flashing light every [frick]ing time he shot a web line out. Ok, i get it now...

Fanboys bricked their nickers about some homemade webb shooters that had no effect on the character whatsoever. At least the cartoon would put Spider-man in situations where running out of webbing was crucial. He only has webb shooters here for the sake of having them, for the sake of the pretentious reaction they received.

I really like the mechanical web-shooters. I'm glad Marc Webb implemented them in his take on Spider-Man.

I still prefer organic webbing with Sam Raimi's version.

The sewer. No webbing, where the [frick] is he going to go?

Final batttle. Peter would have fallen of the building and with no webbing to attach to the building, most likely would have fallen to his "death" becuasethey were broken by the Lizard ( finally see a villain do that)

Crane swign. Webbing doesnt go on for miles, it has a point where it cant shoot any futher. Realstic.

I really like the web-shooters. I originally thought the organic ones would be better and more convenient (story wise), but TASM really turned me around, because it does show Peter's intelligence and also adds an extra level of threat in that he can run out of webbing at any given time - and they were right not to use that plot-point in the first movie, because it's not the sort of thing you should use over and over again through the series, so I'm glad they saved it for a future movie (plus we got different versions of it in this movie, like the webs not working under water, and Lizard breaking the shooters in the finale).

As for the webbing, the way I see it, although it's never made clear in the movie, is that Peter bases his own formula on the bio-cable he steals from Oscorp. It's a bit of a stretch, but basically it's because he tells that criminal that it's webbing he developed ("Webbing that I developed myself, I dont think you really wanna know the details...") yet we see him steal those cartridges. In the video he watches online, the bio-cable has a metallic quality, so I'm guessing he adapts Oscorp's bio-cable into his own webbing. In fact, he may have just stolen empty cartridges to store his own webbing (plus, he may have needed the cartridges so he could build his webshooters around them).

Anyway, I like the webshooters we got in the movie. If I remember correctly, the lights are actually there to show the current status of the webshooters - the red light is there to show that the web-cartridge is loaded properly, while the green bar on the side shows the strength setting of the web or something (to web-swing it needs to be on a stronger setting to shoot the web further, but if it were on that setting when Spidey shot a web at someone it could injure them so he'd put it at a lower setting during combat).
