ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN: Brian Michael Bendis on the Animated Series & Status of Powers

Ultimate Spider-Man, the new animated series, premiered this past weekend on DisneyXD, and Oregonlive.com caught up with consulting producer Brian Michael Bendis to talk to him briefly about the show. He also provides an update on Powers.

Presented to Bendis was the question of what it was about THIS version of Spider-Man that separates it from the various animated incarnations that have aired over the decades.

"The other Spider-Man shows were produced by other people," says Bendis. "Now Marvel is its own studio. This is about Peter Parker trying to be the best version of himself he possibly can. Nick Fury, who is in charge of the Marvel universe, challenges him to accept his offer to train him to be the ultimate Spider-Man. Every episode is like a little, cool travelogue for the Marvel universe -- they get to meet these other superheroes and learn something from them. It's also surprisingly funny -- people forget how funny Spider-Man is."

Moving on to the subject of the FX adaptation of his comic Powers, he updates, "The pilot is done, and based on the strength of that, FX has ordered more scripts. Slowly, but surely, we're moving forward. It's not on the air, but any movement is good in television, so it's a good sign."

i thought it was very enjoyable ... and remember that the episodes should get better as the season goes along

it has some moments when its good, but it has a few faults i.e too many teenage heroes & childish humor like in the first episode "food fight".

spider-man of the 90s is the only great spidey show.

awesome show, 1 of the best comic cartoons ever for sure

The episodes were alright. I think they can ease up on the "humor".

Yes Spidey always has something to say ... which he should; but the constant stop-motion-flashing background of color-type humor came across cheesy and campy.

It reminded, at times, more of "pokemon" than Spiderman. Hopefully they can strike more of a balance.

yeah the food fight bit was very...just no - "serious" supervillains in any medium should not be stopped with a food fight...even if they are the frightful four

whatever i'll still tune in - spectacular spider-man opened with the vulture so if this is ultimate spider-man's equivalent of that then we're in for an awesome show later on

As long as it's about Peter Parker, I'll watch it. No offense to anyone, but he's Spiderman to me, end of talk.

Zero@ because Banner made a deal that if Hulk did good by joining the avengers the hulk would get to stay out.

Ultimate Spider-Man is clearly focused on the kiddies. I'll give it two more weeks to change my mind. If not, I'm out.

I watched it with both of my kids and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Great show so far!

@marvel72 The '90s Spidey series was great when you were 6, but have you watched it since?

It's pretty bad. Let's put aside the fact they thought Spidey should be dark and scary.

They ignore Spidey's agility, speed, and spider-sense in order to make MANY of their stories work.
Peter has a Mid-Western accent.
The animation is pretty stiff.

There are some great things about it, and it's got a LOT of action, which is great, but they really didn't "get" Spider-Man.

Spectacular Spidey -- even w/its missteps w/Electro and Kraven -- was far superior, although I understand that lots of folks felt it was too cartoony-looking. (Um, but it was a cartoon.)

This new series is waaaay Lame and makes Spectacular Spider-Man look like perfection incarnate by comparison. I hate a lone hero having to check in with big brother police/Shield just to be legitimate. It's almost like a fascist propaganda version of Spider-Man.

I do not WANT "cool travelogue for the Marvel universe". I want a series that is an excellent reflection of the classic comics. That's what Spectacular Spider-Man was. I morn its passing.

Each incarnation of Spiderman on Tv improves with time. From the 1960's until now, I have to say that Spectacular and Ultimate are the best. The MTV Spiderman show was good too but it only had one season, which kinda shocked me, though considering the ending I don't think there were any other stories to tell. - - As for the haters, give the damn show a chance. It just started and besides it's way better than some of the other crap on television, so quit complaining.

It was o.k.? it really is an "it is what it is" kind of show. With that understanding, it was an alright show! Still doesn't hold a candle to Avengers EMH

@ phlegmbot, i watch the 90's version on Netflix recently! Still love it, although some arcs were a little drawn out. There whole adaptation of the secret wars was awesome though!

@gusto I fully agree, its just horrible, the animation, character designs and voices are great but the teen titan-esque super corny in between moments are just unnecessary, on the other hand the season premier of Earth's Mightiest Heroes was PHENOMENAL!! Doctor doom and the fantastic four? booyah, sad that they have a new voiceover for cap though :( He sounds like a shitty ham sandwich

Paul Dini infiltrated marvel just to make this show bomb because hes super undercover DC dude. I had huge hopes for this show because he was involved, now I just think he's april fooling us.

It really was a great show. I was pleasantly impressed. I felt like a little kid again waking up that early to watch Spider-Man. Can't wait for next week.

it's a good show, and they're selling it as an action superhero show, which is understandable.
but it HAS potential to be deeper and even darker,I saw the 2 episodes and at at times looks like those elements wanted to come out,but were not really the focus, but at least they're there.

I think that the MTV Spider-man series had a lot more story to tell. Like Spectacular, it set up a problem that would need to be resolved in the next season. I just can't imagine the series ending like that, for good, intentionally. They must've had plans to continue with the show, they only used two or three classic villains. Or two, depending on how you look at it.

I'm willing to give the Ultimate show a chance. So far its been okay, I think it has potential.

It's pretty enjoyable, but from an artistic stance it doesn't have very good graphics. The animation makes me think of 4kids TV type show.
