VENOM And MORBIUS Producer Avi Arad Blasts Sony's Decision To Share SPIDER-MAN With Marvel Studios

Spider-Man franchise producer Avi Arad is widely hated for his contributions to the wall-crawler's big screen legacy, and it's not surprising to learn he wasn't on board with Spidey heading to the MCU.

Avi Arad is a veteran producer in Hollywood who is perhaps best known for working on the Spider-Man franchise. However, he's become widely hated by fans for a number of reasons. For example, he shoehorned Venom into Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and came up with all that convoluted nonsense in The Amazing Spider-Man movies.

Oh, and he's also responsible for Venom, Morbius, and pretty much all the poorly executed ideas we're seeing play out in Sony's Marvel Universe.

Rumour has it that there's no love lost between Arad and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, so no one was really surprised when Arad was frozen out of Spider-Man's Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Now, we've learned how Arad feels about the wall-crawler swinging into the MCU.

In an excerpt from new book, Great Power, the producer is quoted as saying it was "the worst deal," adding that, "They did it for the money. Terrible. Like giving your kids away for adoption, just because you're not sure what to do with them."

Remember, Arad was the one who wanted The Amazing Spider-Man 3 to feature a formula that would raise the dead, while he also hoped to make a Sinister Six movie...with Peter Parker as one of the members of the team.

Looking at the success the franchise has found courtesy of Marvel Studios' creative input, it's clear Sony made the right decision. After all, being part of that trilogy and the Avengers movies has restored Spider-Man's status as one of the world's most popular superheroes, whereas the alternative was for him to be hanging out with Venom and Morbius.

For some reason, Arad was given a gushing thank you in Spider-Man: No Way Home's credits, so we do wonder if he either demanded that or if it was done to placate him.

Either way, here's hoping Spidey remains off-limits to him for the foreseeable future.

Of course they did it for money. Sony didn’t create Spider-man. This is giving away one of your kids for adoption. This is temporarily selling a kid back that you bought in the first place.

@TheUnworthyThor - This is sending your adopted kid to Prep School so they can gain structure.

Any time I see his name on any movie, my expectations almost always drop to zero.

I always thought that Sony needed the money. Weren't they really struggling at that time and there were rumours of them looking for a buy-out? I remember all the talk online about Sony going under and the rights reverting back to Marvel (which i was all for).

Surely it's harder to make bad Venom and Morbius movies than Good/okay/enjoyable ones?

They wasted Tom Hardy twice....!!!

Hopefully the MCU gets him soon

@SimplyAz - It’s hard for me to say they wasted Tom Hardy when he was so heavily involved with the creative decisions of the movies. The second one was literally based upon his story and both were written by his hand-picked good friend that he likes working with who is now going to direct the third one. And his input hardly stopped there.

@TheUnworthyThor -

When you put it like that, I have to agree with you. Well written.
Shows the downside of indulging top talent so much.

Odd talk from someone who's basically the main reason why 90% of all Sony Spider-Man movies are terrible smh.

I don’t care if it’s for money, fame or fortune - whoever does it right and well deserved the credit. Tobey’s Spider Man 1 and 2 was awesome. Casting Andrew? Brilliant. With that said, to hell with Avid for Spider-Man 3 and trying to deliver a Christopher Nolan-esque Spider-Man down our throat. And for Venom’s rubbish writing as well.

Haha, the man responsible for most of Spidey's big screen failures is bitter about Spidey's newfound big screen success once he got kicked out of the deal.

Cry more, Avi, those tears are a perfect mix of sweet & salty

It's more like letting your adopted child go see their biological parent. In the past they weren't financially secure enough to raise a child and had to make a sacrifice. But are now wishing to be in that child's life again.
