Why Spider-Man is the Best Comic Book Character EVER!

Why is Spidey better than the rest?

We've all seen the top ten lists. But not a lot of people say why their favorite is their favorite. So I wanted to do a write up of why Spider-Man is the best superhero ever. Or at least, is my number one favorite.

Why is Spider-Man my favorite superhero of all time?

I'll start with the reason most people say Spider-Man is their favorite: he's relatable. He has money problems, goes to school, tries to hold down a job, has relationship problems with practically everyone he knows, all the while trying to get a date (or keep his marriage strong depending on the comic you are reading). I don't know about the rest of you but I can relate to a guy like that a lot more than I can an alien from another planet who is practically invincible and a guy who is worth 33 billion dollars. Even beyond the obvious things everyone lists about Peter Parker being relatable, Peter is also an avid comic reader. Both in the comics and in the films Peter Parker is a comic book fan who tries to live up to the heroes he's read about. What comic fan can't relate to that? I can't see Bruce Wayne, Kal-El, or even Bruce Banner sitting down and enjoying a comic book. I can on the other hand see Peter Parker visiting a website called comicbookmovie.com to read about upcoming comic movies. Get my point?

Second, is the fact he is such a light-hearted character. All the while he's beating up a thug or supervillain he's making fun of their hair cut. Almost every Spider-Man comic I read has me smiling by the end of it. Life is to short to sit around and read depressing material when the real world is so depressing as it is. I love Batman, Blade, and the Punisher but I hate finishing a comic of theirs' and feeling so depressed. And it's not just in the humor of Spider-Man that we find the light hearted nature. It's also in the fact he calls himself "the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man." He presents himself as a superhero you could just walk up to and say "what's up Spidey!" He acts like he's just a good natured neighbor that lives down the street rather than the larger than life superhero he actually is. That's great. Spidey's the superhero you'd want to hang out with.

The third reason is for the big kid in me: his powers! I love his powers! He has just the right amount of everything to be interesting. He's not strong enough to lift a building, but he's strong enough to lift a car. He can't fly, but he can swing, wall crawl and jump his way to places. He isn't bullet proof, but he can dodge them if he has to. His powers are pulled back just enough that it is almost always a challenge for him, yet not pulled back too much that he's a pussy in a world full of metahumans. And how cool of a power is it to sense danger? I'll tell you: VERY! The power lets him know something is coming but it's still up to him to overcome or react to whatever it is. Even his intelligence is at just the right amount. He's gifted, but not a genius. When Reed Richards figures something out that saves the Fantastic Four we all expect it. But Peter is just smart enough that it is a challenge for him to come up with a scientific solution to a problem he's facing.

This next reason is a little unique. I just said that he is a light hearted superhero, which is true. But there is a layer to the character that is tragic and horrific. Gwen died. People die all the time in Punisher's comic, same with Batman. But when someone dies in a Spider-Man comic the contrast to the normal light hearted nature of the stories and characters really helps those stories shine. After all he did have his DNA spliced with that of a spider. That's pretty freaken scary. Don't believe me? Go watch David Cronenberg's "The Fly." Look hard enough and there is a very thin layer of horror to the character of Spider-Man, and I think that's just genius.

The fifth reason Spider-Man is the best comic book character ever is simple: his villains. Only Batman comes close to having as many great villains. Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Demogoblin, Venom, Carnage, Rhino, Vulture, Doc Ock, Lizard, Scorpion, Black Cat, Tombstone, Hammerhead, Alister Smythe, Morbius, Morlun, Sandman, The Kingpin, Mysterio, Chameleon, Beetle, Hydro-Man, Jackel, Kaine, Kraven, Shocker, Electro and many many others.

Another reason I find myself in love with the character of Spider-Man is that he looks like a superhero ninja! I know it sounds weird but from the very first time I saw Spidey he looked like some kind of creature with big eyes mixed with a colorful ninja. I loved it. I know it sounds crazy. Whatever.

Another big reason Spidey is my favorite is the way he fights. Superman, Batman and even the HULK all pretty much fight the same way, with their fists. Sure they might throw in a kick here and there. Or even in the case of the HULK and Superman might throw something big at the other guy, but for the most part it's an exchange of fists. With Spidey on the other hand he jumps, slides, flips, twirls, spins, and bounces all around while beating up the bad guy. It makes for a fun, unique fight unlike any other character.

And finally the last reason Spider-Man is the greatest comic book character of all time is his supporting cast. Characters like MJ, Gwen, Harry, J. Jonah Jameson, Robbie, Aunt May, Uncle Ben, Flash, Liz, and many others really help build some great stories.

All those things considered Spider-Man is by far my favorite comic book character. Thanks for reading.

OH! And his webs. Those things are friggin cool. Those too.

Spider-Man, too, is my favorite superhero.

I think the whole relate-able appeal, though very true, is somewhat of a repetitive cliche.

I like Spider-Man because many of his stories are laid on a foundation of humanity with superheroics carefully grafted on to it. As opposed to many stories in different forms of media, many elements of Spider-Man aren't idealized. In fact, the harsh realities of life often unfold with Peter Parker being the victim of life's crimes.

As you said, Spider-Man's story is a tragic one. He is a man who risks himself to fighting villains (sometimes those closest to him) or sometimes witnessing , first hand, the death of his loved ones. Yet amidst harsh trauma and pain that life constantly throws at him, Peter maintains some sort of naive but admirable sense of idealism and optimism in the world.

Great responsibility was thrust upon him. It was a freak accident that happened by chance to an unsuspecting everyman. While he made mistakes initially, he devoted his life not for the (self oriented) purpose of avenging the loss of Uncle Ben, but rather, making the most of the supergifts he was blessed with.

There were many times where Peter has pondered on giving up the superheroics to pursue the happiness that he deserves as a human. While he's definitely served and helped volumes of people, he realizes that as long as he lives, it will be up to him to use his powers to the best of his ability. It's a human thing to want to give up a task that proves to be detrimental to yourself and to those you care about. Yet, Peter decides that he must go on through whatever suffering his alter ego brings upon him because he knows it's right.

"With great power, comes great responsibility". Great words to live by.

Nope. Not even a top 5, and after the atrocity that was the Amazing Spider-Man I have him ranked a few spots lower on my list.

Considering The Dark Knight Rises was a far superior film, and at least tried to be original, nope. It was a good film, not the best, but definitely one of the better comic book movies out there.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 4/4/2013, 4:05 PM
Yeah I'm not going to read that. It was a better film and it's not even close. The Amazing Spider-man was just a wasted rehash that duped barely half the audience of the original Sam Raimi film (you know since if failed to sell half the tickets of the original). I know it, the majority of the people that go to the movies know it, the majority of people that review movies know it, and deep down inside underneath all your blind fan boy homoerotic love for the character you know it.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 4/4/2013, 4:11 PM
The fact that you have to go out of your way to prove something with a ridiculously long post about things nobody cares about means you are insecure, and know that the film was superior in every way to your precious twilight,spider-man hybrid of a film. Me I know it was better, and if I need validation of that point, I can just look at reviews, top ten lists, box office gross.

Now who knows, maybe the second one will be better. But don't pretend that the new Spider-Man movie franchise is in the same class as The Avengers, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Thor, First Class or Spider-man 1 and 2.

As for me when I was a kid Cyclops was my favorite comic book character, followed by Batman, Gambit, the Hulk, Daredevil and Superman. Now that I'm older I don't have a definitive number one because I don't have as much time to read comics anymore sadly, but those are the characters that I enjoy or would enjoy seeing the most on screen. Since comic book movies have become more prevalent I would have to add Iron Man, Wolverine, and Thor to that list as well.

VIRILEMAN you didn't post that long rant for nothing, I read it all and agree whole-heartedly. And yeah, well you can't judge a comic book character from the movie some dick made about the character. Whether it's Nolan or Webb, IMO The Dark Knight trilogy is the most over rated CBM of all time and First Class is only good for the first 20 minutes then it's just downhill all the way after that. I mean Fassbender and Bacon were the only good actors in that movie.

Ok, well Spiderman isn't my favorite character but he is a character I do enjoy reading from time to time, because as you mentioned he is more lighthearted. You also bring in interesting point about his villains as I feel this is one shortcoming of the Marvel U. There is some great ones, Dr. Doom is my favorite, but Spidey has way more of his share of great bad guys.

As for the battle of Dark Knight Rises compared to Amazing Spiderman, I considered them about equal movies. Ton of things I would have done differently in each but still not a urinal cake of a movie in either case (ie please see Elektra, Catwoman and Green Lantern for my Urinal Cake awards). I enjoyed both of them in the theater but neither were one of my favorites.

For me I can't really name a favorite character.

It's okay if you believe Spider-Man is the greatest superhero ever. I disagree, but it's your opinion, and your entitled to it. In my opinion the greatest superhero ever is Superman, because without him we wouldn't have any of them, but my favorite superhero is Batman. I find Marvel fans statements about DC not being relatable false. I relate to Batman because he is human, and worked hard to achieve his physical, and mental abilities. I'm not an orphan, but I can see some orphans becoming public servants like cops, firefighters, lawyers, and doctors to help people, and prevent other kids from becoming orphans themselves, and fulfilling the notion that one person can make a difference like Batman does.

I can also see immigrants relating to Superman. Superman has to find his place in a world he wasn't born in. Just like immigrants would in a country they weren't born in. I'm not saying that only immigrants can relate to Superman, but that anybody can find something they can relate to with any superhero. For example I can see someone with drug problems relating with Red Arrow, or someone with HIV relating with Mia Dearden AKA the second Speedy . As a matter of fact every superhero can be relatable to someone.

I completely agree with this article. Spidey is absolutely my favourite hero for pretty much all the reasons mentioned.

That doesn't mean he has to be everyone's though. This should be a fourum for people to talk about their favourite heroes and the reasons for it. It should not be for people having a go at films which the didn't like. How did it desend it to a bitching match about ASM and TDKR? No one asked what your favourite CBM was. Incidently I like TDKR much better that ASM even though Spidey is my favourite. That's my opinion. It doesn't mean someone else with a different opinion is wrong, it's just different. That's the point of opinions.

Also, I'd like to congratulate dicktrickle on a really fantastic user name. I almost shat myself laughing!

Spider-Man is a great character and pretty accessable/ relatable. I just hate what Marc Webb did with the character in TASM. He obviously didn't get the concept of the character.

@Rob2814
Agreed....
I've said the same stuff about Dark Knight Rises, neither TDKR or TASM was perfect. Both had a lot of issues and they weren't the best CBMs ever...but they still were awesome with great storyline, decent acting and cool characters. Should it have been better? Of course, but overall it's still a good watch.

Anyways, I've always looked at Superman for the #1 title. He's not neccessarliy my #1 personal favorite (that goes to Hulk) but I think he is the greatest superhero ever, he was in fact the first one and not only that. He is the persona of good, he is the icon that everyone...not JUST the DC universe, but comicdom as a whole looks to Superman as the example and the icon of what true heroism means...that makes him the best one IMO.
GuardianDevil

But I agree 100% about the rogues gallery, Spidey's rogues gallery is second to none.. Batman is the only other one that even comes close. Superman has a great rogues gallery as well, so does Cap. I'd say those are the top 4 rogues galleries of all time.

Now, if you wanna hear some of my favorites..here goes:

My favorite is Hulk, not just because he's strong. But he is a deep, dark, emotionally complex character. His human side is very interesting as well, it's fun to read about the complexity of being Banner and Hulk and back and forth...they're two completely different personalities, and it's an interesting dynamic. Along with the fact that Hulk is mostly a fugitive, but he still manages to do the right thing most of the time. All that makes him a great character...

Another personal favorite is Superman, I already elaborated in this in my previous comment.

Captain America, for the same reasons as Superman just to a lesser degree.

Batman, he's pretty much the definition of coolness. Some of the best stories of all time. Plus, he's got the second best rogues gallery ever.

Daredevil, as with Batman DD pretty much defines coolness. He also has great stories, and uses fear as a symbol and it's soo much fun to read.

Spider-Man, greatest rogues gallery of all time. Interesting character, goes through day to day issues and makes for a great read.

Deathstroke, he's just too awesome.

That's all I can think of now, I'll do more if I think of them.

I always found Dcik Grayson to be more relatable, he's most of what you find in Spider-man to be relateable, he hasn't had hacks like Quesada mess him up and, he grows up but acts more grown up as he does, unlike Spidey (Post OMD)

Most polls about greatest comic character will always list Superman,Batman, and Spider-man in the top three position thought who's number one varies from poll to poll and year to year. But ultimately greatest ever varies from person to person.

Now that I think about it Batman is the best superhero ever. Let me give you guys the reasons why this is. Batman has the best comic book movie ever TDK. Batman has the best comic book graphic novel ever The Dark Knight returns only second to Watchmen which are both owned by DC. Batman has the best comic book Video game franchise ever the Arkahm series. Batman has the best comic book animated tv show ever Batman The animated series. Batman has the best comic book animated films ever Batman Under The Red Hood, Batman Mask of The Phantasm, and The Dark Knight Returns parts 1, and 2.

I forgot to also add that Batman had the best comic book series of 2012 Scott Snyder's Batman. Also Batman is the first, and the only superhero to pass the billion dollar mark in a solo film, and the first, and only superhero to make 2 billion in two solo films.
