Suicide Squad is, on its own, a great concept. Even without the fact that villians of DC comics are starring in it, I would probably see it. But the fact that villians like Deadshot and Harley Quinn is in it is pretty awesome. I have faith in David Ayer, who directed Fury. Fury was a great ensemble, but a great study of relationships in a dysfunctional family. If Marvel ever gets the rights back to Fantastic Four, I'd want him to direct. But I digress.
Anyway, I like rumored cast choices for the characters ie Margot Robbie for Harley Quinn ( but PLEASE NO JAI COURTNEY!!). But I don't like how Jesse Eisneberg's Lex Luthor is rumored to be in this. I also don't like how the Joker is going to be in there. I do like Jared Leto as the Joker because he is a weird and creppy dude, but I don't want him shoehorned in there. Becasue lets be honest, he won't have a small part or a supporting role. If they want a picky actor like Leto to join a comic book movie, they are putting him front in center. Center of the team, the plot, and the movie posters.
I also don't understand why having Luthor in there either. He and the Joker are A-list villians, some of the most iconic. Sure he can be sent to jail at the end of Dawn of Justice and that's how they can tie things up ( calling it now), but this isn't faithful to the concept.
Now look. As a Warner Bros, exec. it makes sense. Get the best of the best all in one movie. No-brainer, right? Well no, it's not. Suicude Squad is called that for a reason. They go in mission that will most likely get them killed. And Ayer proved in his latest movie he can do that (although it was based on a true story). But you can't kill Lex Luthor or the Joker. You can't. You can't kill iconic characters. You can kill Rick Flagg. You can kill Captain Boomerang. You can kill Harley Quinn, but that's a debatable one. Lex and Joker won't be killed and that just is a middle finger to the whole concept of the movie and take away the suspense that follows the movie.
The problem with comic-book movies and action-adventure movies in general is that the hero will live. Not one CBM has killed their lead. Now I'm not saying go kill Iron Man in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but this can bring something new to the genre. And by sticking in Lex Luthor and the Joker is just giving it the genaric feel that the movie shouldn't have.
However this is all speculation. Leave your comments below if you think A-list DC villains should be in Suicide Squad or should the lower level villains shine.
