BOX OFFICE: MAN OF STEEL Opens With $5.86 Million In China

It's dominated in North America and overseas, so it should come as no surprise to learn that Man of Steel has opened at #1 in China. Hit the jump for further details on how well the Zack Snyder helmed and Christopher Nolan produced reboot has done in the country.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Man of Steel has dominated the Chinese box office on its first day of release after taking a total of 80% of all business on Thursday. Following an appearance from director Zack Snyder and star Henry Cavill at a gala premiere at the Shanghai International Film Festival earlier this week, the reboot would go on to earn $5.86 million (36 million yuan) yesterday, kicking off a run which should help add a good amount to its total worldwide cume. However, Man of Steel does face some fairly stiff competition from Jet Li's Badges of Fury. To give you an idea of the importance of China's box office, Iron Man 3 took a whopping $120 million when it opened there and The Dark Knight Rises grossed over $50 million. How much do you guys think it will earn?

Iron Man 3 execs 'changed film for Chinese audience' by adding four minutes to the film with Chinese actors

Chinese version of Iron Man 3 has an extra four minutes of footage
Chinese actors and locations do not appear in the International version
Disney partnered with a Chinese production company to get around strict censorship laws
China co-production also ensures a bigger slice of the profits - 40 percent instead of 25 percent
Film has made almost $100m dollars in China so far in two weeks
China has second biggest film-going public in the world and Hollywood wants access to billions of dollars for films that become hits

I liked the proportion of action in MOS, i thought it was thoroughly enjoyable and i didn't think this film was for me at first. The shaky cam was slightly off putting at the start due to a condition I have and when he first took flight the CGI of flying over the fields were a bit meh. All other CGI in the film i thought was very cool

Glad its doing well because i came away from the cinema quite happy. Im not a huge fan of the template of fight scene, talk scene, fight scene, talk scene etc so was excited when the last 45 mins rolled round and we had our story and we had our characters in place. Then it was ass kicking time.

I'm not convinced that a Justice League film would have the right balance but i would absolutely love to be proven wrong by the film makers. When they have a good enough product to actually show the likes of me that they have something special then it shall be viewed

Really enjoyed the movie, although the editing wasn't very good, and I think it could've done with a little bit more character and a little bit less action, because [SPOILERS] I'm pretty sure The Daily Planet is the only building still standing in Metropolis.

Yes, samurai are Japanese.

But I do believe that Asians love robots, especially giant robots. Not sure what the obsession is. I expect Pacific Rim to do very well in Asia.

@McGee

Why did they have to take Earth? Why not Terraform Mercury. Have the planet right beside the sun:

More Sun = More Energy

All the while having a planet with the ability to sustain Kryptonian life

Does that make sense to anyone or am I overthinking?
