BOX OFFICE: MAN OF STEEL Soars With A Weekend Opening Of $25.8 Million In China

While it may not gross as much as Iron Man 3 due to the fact that it's wasn't a Chinese co-production, Man of Steel has still taken flight in the country with an impressive opening weekend of $25.8 million. Read on for details!

It's not easy for Hollywood blockbusters to find success in China. Just look at how The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises were pitted against one another last year; that move ultimately took a big chunk out of each of their respective box office totals. In fact, it seems as if the only way to guarantee success is to be a Chinese co-production like Iron Man 3 or the upcoming Transformers 4. Man of Steel wasn't, but still managed to take flight in China with an opening weekend of $28.5 million. This is an impressive feat, especially as its main rival - Jet Li's Badges of Fury - is being screened across the country far more widely. With the Superman reboot being shown in only a few major locations, this has allowed the police actioner to fill up regular movie theatres and gross almost as much due to how widespread it it. Regardless, every little helps, and it appears as of right now that the Zack Snyder helmed Man of Steel has indeed been enough of a financial success in order to ensure a sequel and perhaps the promised DC Cinematic Universe.

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question 'Why am I here?' Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.

STARRING:

Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman
Amy Adams as Lois Lane
Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent
Diane Lane as Martha Kent
Michael Shannon as Zod

RELEASE DATE: June 14th, 2013.

Because of the more "cheaper" pirated DVD's of Man of Steel in China, which Chinese in his right mind wants to pay a huge sum to watch a movie in theaters?

@DoubleD

It dropped because it had competition in the face of MU and WWZ.Both of them were also much anticipated, but that doesn't mean people don't go to see MoS.

HAHAHA! What a joke. Why didn't it do as well as Avatar? Too few aliens? What about Iron Man 1 and 2? Holy christ that might have been the most pathetic thing I've read on this site yet. Excellent, unbiased journalism right there. Fox News could learn a thing or two from you.

This is truly sad. China got a pirated DVD so people won't go see it? I saw Iron Man 3 in HD at home the day it came out. MOS, still no dvd quality bootlegs online. What a joke. Just take the L like men and move on. In the words of the great poet Marshall Mathers "Let it go dog it's over".

MOS has been the movie I have looked forward to the most, so I am glad it's doing well and we'll be getting more. IM3 however for one, was a hell of a lot more funny - I mean I laughed more in IM3 than Hangover 2, plus as the 3 rd in a series just seemed more developed - its also easier on the eyes (shaky-cam..ahem). So no wonder it did so well and good for it and Downey who just owned the part. MOS is a different beast so looking forward to the next development. I am liking the different slant from the Marvel SHIELD based premise - where its like - I'm Kal El deal with it, you cannot control me.

PeterDarker - 6/24/2013, 3:06 AM
Thor and Cap will make at least 500 mill each. Without old Batsy, DC is done. They better make that Justice League movie sooner than later.

since when does money equal quality. Transformers earned a billion in 2011 and does that mean it was movie of the year. Smh
UrbanKnight
UrbanKnight - 6/24/2013, 3:09 AM
@osideous

Even Justice League, Avatar, and Titanic on their second week would worry about two new movie releases opening with 66 and 82 million respectively!
osideous
osideous - 6/24/2013, 3:11 AM
@UrbanKnight you're talking about a Superman movie, that lost to Monsters University and WWZ. If it had been The Dark Knight or TDKR they would have decimated those two films just like The Avengers would have. do not try and say they are in the same league movie wise as MOS. MOS is craptastic Goyer sucks and should never have been able to pen a superman movie.

Excelent!

I think the movie its on track for 400m internationally, a big hit being a reboot.
UrbanKnight
UrbanKnight - 6/24/2013, 3:17 AM
@DoubleD "UrbanKnight, When the Man of Steel tops 1.5 billion dollars worldwide and knocks the Avengers out of their spot then I will call the Man of Steel the greatest comic book movie ever made."

WTF!? I don't even think MoS is in the top 5! It has flaws. The best CBM of all time is on of the DARKEST CBM ever made as well. That masterpiece was The Dark Knight.
It didn't use the 3D gimmick or had China to add to its grosses. Plus with ticket inflation ALONE it almost sold as many tickets as one of the most fun colorful light kid/family friendly CBM of all time, The Avengers.

osideous
osideous - 6/24/2013, 3:20 AM
The Dark Knight has flaws because Christian Bale was upstaged by Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart. Bale phoned that shit in :(. Bale's best performance was Batman Begins IMHO

@Urbanknight...stop. Please just...just stop. I bet if you found out your girl blew an enitre football team, you would say "It's not her fault. She's going through some things. I still love her". Quit the excuses and take the L man. It's done. Over. Finished. Curtains. The end.

I KNOW what the [frick] I'm talking about! What you DONT get is that even if TDK, TDKR, TA and any movie had won second weekend, they STILL would of lost MONEY!!! Avengers might have made 80-85 million with MU AND WWZ opening in its second weekend, instead of 103 million, for example.
