BOX OFFICE: MAN OF STEEL Soars With A Weekend Opening Of $25.8 Million In China
While it may not gross as much as Iron Man 3 due to the fact that it's wasn't a Chinese co-production, Man of Steel has still taken flight in the country with an impressive opening weekend of $25.8 million. Read on for details!
It's not easy for Hollywood blockbusters to find success in China. Just look at how The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises were pitted against one another last year; that move ultimately took a big chunk out of each of their respective box office totals. In fact, it seems as if the only way to guarantee success is to be a Chinese co-production like Iron Man 3 or the upcoming Transformers 4. Man of Steel wasn't, but still managed to take flight in China with an opening weekend of $28.5 million. This is an impressive feat, especially as its main rival - Jet Li's Badges of Fury - is being screened across the country far more widely. With the Superman reboot being shown in only a few major locations, this has allowed the police actioner to fill up regular movie theatres and gross almost as much due to how widespread it it. Regardless, every little helps, and it appears as of right now that the Zack Snyder helmed Man of Steel has indeed been enough of a financial success in order to ensure a sequel and perhaps the promised DC Cinematic Universe.
In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question 'Why am I here?' Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.
