In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Richard Donner's
Superman: The Movie (and 80th anniversary of the beloved DC character), Fathom Events, Warner Bros., and DC are partnering together to bring the legendary film back to the big screen for select nights. The movie will be presented in its original theatrical version as audiences experienced it all the way back in December 1978.
That means fans will get to see the legendary Christopher Reeve, in all his glory, portray the Man of Steel. Although we've seen plenty of actors don the iconic shield over the years in various big screen adaptations, Reeve's Superman/Clark Kent is widely considered to be the best. And with all of the drama surrounding the current DC Extended Universe and Cavill as the current iteration of Superman (
or maybe not anymore), this couldn't have come at a better time.
Of course, Reeve is just one of the bright spots in a cast full of stars that includes Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, Gene Hackman as villainous Lex Luthor, Marlon Brando and Susannah York as Superman's parents Jor-El and Lara; Ned Beatty and Valerie Perrine as Luthor's sidekicks Otis and Miss Tessmacher; Jackie Cooper as Perry White; Glenn Ford and Phyllis Thaxter as George and Martha Kent; and Jeff East as teenaged Clark Kent.
Basically, if you have not seen
Superman: The Movie, this is undoubtedly the optimal experience. The film will return to select theaters nationwide for showings on Sunday, November 25, and Tuesday, November 27, at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Should you be unable to attend, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced earlier this week that
Superman: The Movie will be released on 4K Ultra HD for the first time.
As an added bonus, Max Fleischer's animated
Superman short
Mechanical Monsters will accompany the film in theaters. The 10-minute, Technicolor cartoon is one of 17 animated shorts produced in the 1940s that were based on the DC hero.
Additionally, the stylized animated adventure
Batman: Mask of Phantasm will also return to theaters for only one night on Monday, November 12, for showings at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
You can find tickets and participating theaters for these movies over on the
Fathom Events website.
