Can you imagine Krypto, DC's most famous superdog, fighting with Mister Terrific in the middle of the street? Well, that madness existed in Superman (2025), although it never made it into James Gunn 's final cut . Now the deleted scene has surfaced, and we assure you it's hilarious.
Because yes, Superman is full of action, epicness, and heart, but there was also room for an almost comedic moment that mixed an intellectual hero with the most charismatic dog in superhero cinema. And the question inevitably arises: why did James Gunn decide to leave out this little gem?
Metropolis's weirdest encounter in Superman (2025)
As is often the case with any blockbuster, Superman also left several sequences on the cutting room floor. One of them showed Mister Terrific trying to convince Krypto to join him on a mission. The scene was filmed in the summer, and thanks to leaks from the set, we were able to see Edi Gathegi (the actor behind Terrific) standing in front of a pet store with dog treats in his hand.
The problem is that Krypto , who was obviously CGI-created, didn't seem to be very keen on playing along. Superdog managed to use his heat vision and scorch the hero's foot. The consequence: Mister Terrific later appeared with a bloody bandage on his ankle, although that detail was lost in the final version of Superman.
Heat Vision or Canine Bite?
The curious thing is that, according to the footage now released by Collider, Krypto's attack didn't end with just the laser beam. There was also a serious bite that made it clear who was in charge in that relationship. The recovered footage shows Mister Terrific even trying to get the dog to fly him through the skies of Metropolis, but the experiment ends with the hero complaining about his sore feet.
In short: a raunchy scene that fits with James Gunn's playful tone, but ultimately didn't add much to the frenetic pace of Superman's final act.
James Gunn and his vision of Superman
James Gunn had already made it clear that his approach to Superman would be different. He wanted not only spectacular action, but also humor and tenderness. And although Krypto and Mister Terrific brought comedy, the decision to cut them from the film seems logical: in the middle of the final battle with Lex Luthor, it might have broken the tension too much.
Of course, the director didn't completely discard the sequence. Part of the footage ended up recycled into a promotional spot, albeit without the most chaotic part of the attack. Yet another example of how Hollywood squeezes every last second out of a blockbuster.
The cast that brings the new DC universe to life
Superman is the great starting point for the new DC Universe. David Corenswet has proven himself a perfect Clark Kent, with a blend of innocence and strength reminiscent of classic comics. At his side, Rachel Brosnahan shines as Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult offers a charismatic and terrifying Lex Luthor.
The cast is rounded out by some notable names: Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Milly Alcock, and María Gabriela de Faría, among others. And yes, although Krypto doesn't have as much of a presence as he does in the comics, his brief appearance confirms that James Gunn is determined to play with the entire roster of Superman characters.
Why do we love this deleted scene?
Beyond the anecdotal, the sequence reinforces something that has always made Superman special: the blend of epic and humor. Watching the Man of Steel fly between skyscrapers is incredible, but seeing his dog causing trouble is a reminder that this universe also has room for laughter.
Furthermore, the presence of Mister Terrific points to a future where supporting characters will have more weight in the new DC franchise. And who knows, maybe this dynamic between a cerebral hero and a stubborn dog will return in a sequel.
Superman keeps flying high
Despite leaving out this moment, Superman has won over critics and audiences alike. The film is now available on HBO Max and digital platforms, and arrives on Blu-ray this September 23, ready for fans to relive every scene, including extras with never-before-seen footage.
The critics have made it clear: Superman is an exciting show, full of ideas and featuring a hero who recaptures the essence of goodness. And while Krypto may have bitten the dust on the editing room floor, his brief appearance reminds us that Gunn's DC universe aims to be expansive, surprising, and, above all, fun.
