Hello my friends, in this editorial I'm going to give you my reasons why I feel it is crucial and necessary that the upcoming Superman film called the Man of Steel is a success. Obviously, you should want any comic book movie to be a success but I feel there is a lot more at stake here than just another Superman movie. Thank you for reading and please enjoy.

Warner Bros/DC needs to show they can have success with a franchise other than Batman.

First off, I have to say that a big reason why this is absolutely necessary is because in the last 20 years or so. Almost nothing non-Batman has had any success, I mean seriously think about every Warner Bros/DC movie that's come out since the late 80's/early 90's. The only real successes were Batman (89), Batman Returns, Batman Begins, Watchmen, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises. Watchmen is the only non-Batman film to actually have success. Many people (myself included) have begun to lose faith in Warner Bros. Many would claim that the reason Marvel is beating DC in movies is because Marvel's characters are "better". Which honestly they aren't, I'd rate them about the same. (Batman = Iron Man, Wonder Woman = Thor, Superman = Captain America, etc.) It's simply because Marvel is willing to take chances, Warner Bros will take chances but they won't get the right people and don't fund them properly. Resulting in a failure, WB only puts big money on characters that they know for sure will sell.

With all that said, Warner Bros needs to prove that they can make money with something other than Batman. Watchmen came very close to proving this, Man of Steel needs to do it even better than Watchmen. Many of us have almost lost faith in Warner Bros and it needs to be restored. Realistically speaking, Batman is the only franchise that DC has made big money with in the last 20 years or so. Watchmen almost changed this, I'm hoping and praying Man of Steel does as well.

Superman needs respect.

The next big reason that success is crucial is because Superman's popularity from what I've seen is at a low right now. Public backlash towards the character for being "overpowered" and "not relatable" has hurt his popularity, that along with the fact that his last two movies were garbage (Superman 3 and Superman Returns) is really killing the general audience's image of Superman. In my personal opinion, Superman is the greatest DC character of all time and if not number 1,then definitely top 3. (you could argue Batman and possibly the Joker) He's never given the respect he deserves as THE superhero, Superman is one of..if not the greatest superhero of all time. His previous films were embarrassing.

Whenever a cool movie comes out about a certain character, that character gets a boost in popularity. This is what I'm hoping will happen to Superman, his movie should get him the respect he deserves and bring him back to one of the best in the eyes of the public. It is crucial that it succeeds because if it doesn't, Superman's reputation will be gone completely.

DC needs to get back in the game.

Next, is the fact that many see DC as the underdog in the Marvel/DC competition. Like I stated before, DC needs to put out more films if it wants to stay successful. In order to compete with Marvel, and actually give them a run for their money. DC needs to start putting out a lot more quality films, DC has a few great films but not as many as Marvel. DC needs to get back in the game, and give great films to all of their great characters. So that they can properly compete with Marvel.

Quite frankly, I feel Man of Steel should be the first of these. DC is already planning a cinematic universe, which is meant to compete with Marvel. Make it good, and we've got a good competition.

It will set the stage for an upcoming DC cinematic universe and a Justice League film.

Lastly, is the fact that Man of Steel supposedly will be the kick off of the DC cinematic universe. Like the way Iron Man did to the Marvel cinematic universe, I'm hoping the DC cinematic universe is a big success. I would like to see good films for Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter and Flash. Aquaman perhaps in the future, a Green Lantern reboot or maybe even Lobo or a John Constantine reboot. DC has a slate of great characters with great stories that Warner Bros needs to be willing to use. All of it could lead up to a big Justice League of America movie (rumored to come out on 2015, although it doesn't seem likely to be out that early), Man of Steel will set the tone for the DC cinematic universe just the same way Iron Man did for Marvel. If Man of Steel is a flop, then we can expect the rest of the DCCU not to come, WB doesn't take chances unless they know they are going to succeed. If Man of Steel proves it can succeed. Then Warner Bros will be far more likely to utilize all of the other great DC characters that they own.

In closing, I hope this movie does well. It is crucial for the DC cinematic universe, and for Superman's popularity. If Man of Steel fails, then we can expect the Justice League film not to happen. Superman is my favorite DC character, and I'm hoping this movie will bring him back. From what I've heard, and the trailers I've seen. It looks pretty good so far, but I will only know for sure when it actually comes out, and my fingers are crossed.

That's all folks, I'd like to hear your opinion on the matter and I'd like to hear some feedback about my article.

Thanks for reading, if you enjoyed my article then please give it the thumbs up!

its got to be a massive success,so we get more dc characters other than batman all the time.

competition is good for both companies marvel & dc,it should inspire each other to make better movies.

It will be... it probably wont earn cash as quickly as IM3 but I think it will slowly claw back at the Marvel flagship character.

I think it'll finish somewhere between $600-$800 million but could go bigger... trailer 2 is the best movie trailer in recent memory for me.

DC cant put out more movies because they dont have they're own independent studio like Marvel has, which caters specifically and only towards comic book films. Warner Bros are the one's who handle DC properties, not DC themselves.

The problem is that Warner Bros have other successful franchises which are bringing in big money e.g. the hangover, harry potter, sherlock holmes, lord of the rings etc/the hobbit. They've got to cater to other film genre's and not just comic book films. This leads to us just getting either batman or superman films all the time, as they are probably DC's most overexposed comic book characters. These two had the most media exposure over the years, so they probably feel that these are safer characters to do.

They took a chance with green lantern back in 2011, which resulted in a mess of a film(suit's and people involved didn't know what they were doing) which didn't do to well at the box office.

I personally dont think Warner Bros will ever make a proper DC film universe until CBM's in general start making The Dark Knight/Rises territory money. Hopefully DC somehow get they're own studio in the near future to rival Marvel and give us more CBM's in general.

If it deserves it, it deserves it. They've made dumb changes to try to modernize or make Superman more relatable, with which I disagree. Change for change sake is dumb.

I don't think it is fair to place the entire future of the DC universe on one film. If that is the case, did the Hulk end the Marvel Universe? The key is to make it profitable. One of the the things I cannot understand is why DC movies need to be blockbuster movies. You could easily make smaller budget movies that are almost assuredly going to make money and quite frankly could still turn out looking better than teh so called block buster movies. For example I have been a big proponent of making a Wonder Woman film and the studios just won't take a chance. The thing is that a Wonder Woman "like" movie has already been made and has spawned four sequels it is called Underworld...about a superpower woman...who is the warrior daughter (although adopted) of a monarch...who is part of a mythical community filled with monsters. It was a movie made for $22 million and grossed $95 million worldwide. This DESPITE the fact it was rated R, was not during the 3D wave of movies, and was a completely NEW character.

Catwoman on the other hand had a budget of $100 million and grossed $82 million worldwide. The CGI, story and style of the film was 100 million times worse than Underworld.

I don't get it!?!

It just can't be that hard unless they really don't care about the character. If the only characters they care about are Batman and Superman then no wonder they can't get a Justice League or any other DC title movie off the ground.

Incredible Hulk wasn't a bad movie.

But imagine if Iron Man had been a major flop...like say equivalent to Green Lantern. Do you think the MCU would keep going? No, it would NOW because MCU has a bunch of other stuff to keep it going. If Iron Man failed horribly then I believe that the MCU probably wouldn't be here.

I didn't even have to read your article to have to be able to say why its so important. I did though, good job. Just like in my own article, these films have to succeed to support the big picture. The continued success of this genre of film. Marvel vs dc my ass, a marvel man myself. If any of these films flop it increases the chances of all of this just becoming the next string of eighties Chuck Norris action flicks. A phase in cinema to be replaced by the next big thing. I DO NOT want it to ever happen. Theres too many super heroes we've yet to see!

@ Fenix122

I meant the original Hulk (Ang Lee). Actually I loved the Incredible Hulk..it is an underrated movie.

If Iron Man LOST money then that would have been a big set back. But I think that if it did just OK then it would not have sunk the Marvel Universe. In fact, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and Thor were not earth shattering successes. I think as long as it makes a nice profit then that is good enough for Marvel whereas with DC it seems like it has to blow the box office out of the water or they give up on it.

@Fortha
Ah, I see. I agree Ang Lee wasn't that good, while I loved Incredible Hulk.

All I'm saying is, if Iron Man was a film equivalent to Green Lantern, Elektra or Superman Returns. Would anyone be interested in a Marvel cinematic universe? I don't think so. I'm not neccessarily talking only about money. I was also talking about the quality of the film. Like Captain America and Incredible Hulk were both awesome movies, but as you said not amazing at th box office. Thor is the exception, that movie was really weak IMO. But Cap and Hulk movies weren't massively financially successful but they were high quality films with great action and epic storylines. Thor wasn't...but all I'm saying is I hope it's a high quality and enjoyable film that also does well at the box office. That's all...its ok if it's a GOOD movie not GREAT movie (although I'd prefer the latter) I just don't want it to be a HORRIBLE movie like Green Lantern or something like that. You know?
WYLEEJAY
WYLEEJAY - 4/10/2013, 5:08 PM
But those movies factor in to the whole phase one. So in that aspect, they were all a huge success. You can't really count them alone with this franchise can you?
GuardianDevil
GuardianDevil - 4/10/2013, 5:24 PM
@WYLEEJAY
true, but aside from that. Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Iron Man were all high quality films...and they are great even if you look at them as a stand alone.

I used to think that if Man of Steel was successful that it would open the door for other DC characters to get their own films. But the more I think about about it, the more I'm starting to believe that a successful Man of Steel movie = Man of Steel sequels instead of some "pandora's box" opening to introduce other characters.

Going by WB/DC's track record, they've never displayed being able to handle multiple cbm's in production other than doing them one at a time. I think it's more likely they'll bang out a Man of Steel trilogy over then next 6-8 years than to start a cinemactic universe like MARVEL Studios has. Of course I'm hoping for some other heroes to get some love on the big screen, but from everything WB/DC has done in the past nothing leads to believe they're all of a sudden going to step outside the box now. Idk, I guess only time will tell.

@theboss if it does fail you can be sure that you wont get sequels or anything else and people will start writing obituary predictions for the genre. We cant let that happen.

@Jokerfan
I said Warner Bros/DC (notice I said "DC").

They need to prove that they can make a good non-Batman DC film. In the last 20 years, Watchmen is the only one.

Now that Harry Potter is over and the Tolkein-esque movies are about to be finished there just might be space for another DC franchise within WB. But don't bet on it. Apart from Superman and Batman DC characters have always struggled in the 'real life' format and WB more than knows this.

I hope Man of Steel is successful for two reasons. 1) So, I can be proven wrong about Snyder as a director and about Superman being an uninteresting character as well as unrelatable and 2) So, it can start a DC Cinematic Universe. I like good, friendly competition and that's what DC could do with Marvel.
RobGrizzly
RobGrizzly - 4/13/2013, 12:18 PM
Watchmen wasn't successful, so its still just Batman for DC.

But of course i fully agree with the article.( well done by the way).
I think WB and DC are well aware of what's riding on this. Imagine, just imagine what happens if this fails. No more Batman to lean on, either.
Do they go back to the drawing board? Will Superman finally just be considered irredeemable? Justice League may never get off the ground if its founding member can't work. And you can forget about the race with Marvel. They'll be on Phase 4 by the time Wonder Woman finally gets made. If Man of Steel isn't everything it needs to be, the results will be disastrous.

No pressure

You mentioned the last Superman movies. Superman 3 and Returns. What about superman 4, the quest for world peace. That was the worst Superman movie. Honestly, Superman 3 wasn't great by any means but it did have its moments. The battle between Superman and Clark was the highlight of the movie. Superman Returns was a good idea on paper but fell really short. It lacked action, epic story telling and Superman didn't face a real threat. I personally believe Man of Steel will deliver on all levels. Can't wait to watch the new trailer. Looking forward to its release.
