Grant Morrison Weighs In On Zack Snyder's Superman

The hugely influential writer behind All-Star Superman tells Hero Complex what he wants to see from Warner Bros and director Zack Snyder's upcoming take on The Man Of Steel..

Over at La Times Hero Complex comic writer Grant Morrison tells Geoff Boucher what he is hoping for from WB's latest effort at brining Superman to the big screen..

“I can’t wait to see what they do. There are so many ways to tell Superman stories that might resonate with a modern audience, and I’m looking forward to see how Zack Snyder approaches it. Things I’d personally like to see are a non-camp Luthor, some other villains like Metallo or Brainiac and a more vigorous, go-getting Superman. The noble attempts to portray him as a Christ-like, American redeemer figure in ‘Superman Returns’ had the unfortunate effect of making him a limp and wimpy punch bag. Superman is a highly principled hero, but he’s no pacifist; he’s a brawler who doesn’t give in until he’s dead or the bad guy’s down, and I’d like to see a bit more of that grit. “

Well, without having to ask I know that Morisson's hopes for this movie echo the vast majority's here on CBM. Snyder has already said that he feels Superman "needs to be physical" so lets hope Mr Morrison(and the rest of us!) get what we are hoping for.

Grant Morrison rocks, and yea he wants what we want, the warrior for justice, not the sobby Christ-metaphor.

@Ironbat- Because he had the chance too. He did what any rational, sane human would do and take that chance.

Maybe he should be writing the script to the new movie.

It's too bad Superman Returns didn't work out because it had good intentions. I really would have liked to see what Routh would have been capable of if he was allowed to do his own thing instead of being relegated to doing a Christopher Reeve impersonation. Kevin Spacey might have been a little campy but he was the most charismatic thing in that whole damn movie.

If anyone in the world completely understands The Man of Steel, it's Grant Morrison. Or Geoff Johns... I'm gonna go with both.

I love what he said, that Superman is a brawler but highly principaled. The problem with Returns was that they made him out to be a p*ssy. I want to see the Man of Steel go fisticuffs with a proper challenge to his strength. I really have a good feeling about this movie, and I think that Zack Snyder is a great choice to bring Superman back to the silver screen.

i think he can still be Christ like w/o being a pacifist. its how the creators of the character wrote him up to be in the first place. however i do agree that id like to see a go getter superman a la "he’s a brawler who doesn’t give in until he’s dead or the bad guy’s down, and I’d like to see a bit more of that grit. “

Thank god for Morrison, he actually UNDERSTANDS Superman. I agree completely- NO MORE CAMPY LUTHOR and dammit Superman's GOTTA THROW A [frick]ING PUNCH.

Morrison should have some creative control over the film to make certain Snyder does these things. I'm still a bit...nervous about the film.

@naterator: Siegel and Shuster were Jewish. He was never meant to be "Christ-like". He was based more on Samson and Hercules than a pacifist hippy like Jesus.

"The pair re-envisioned* the character, who became more of a hero in the mythic tradition, inspired by such characters as Samson and Hercules, who would right the wrongs of Siegel and Shuster's times, fighting for social justice and against tyranny"

I hate that "Christ-like" nonsense. He goes after the wrongs of society aggressively, because he can, so he must.

*Edit: re-envisioned from a bald telepathic villain who wanted to take over the world, before you ask. :)

You all do realize the minute Superman throws a punch in the film...everyone in the theater will give him a standing ovation. LMAO.

IT SHOULDN'T HAVE TAKEN THIS MANY YEARS FOR SUPERMAN TO FINALLY THROW A PUNCH.

It's a basic concept WB seems to struggle with. =(

@KeithM- EXACTLY. The Christ-like CRAP is what helped to kill Superman-Returns well...that and the Singer/Routh team :P

@naterator- NOW you suddenly wanna see Superman fight? I remember articles ago you didn't like my intentions for Superman to fight. You preferred another BORING film for the guy. You not only wanted Routh back but you made it clear you preferred the STORY over the action.

I kept saying before- an equal mix of BOTH story AND action are necessary because THAT is what makes a good film. But you (naterator) only wanted story...oh and ROUTH -_-

I noticed lately all the routh-bootists are starting to act like they never said the things they said. Well...Bryan Singer's posterboy routh is GONE...and that sorry, sad pathetic of an excuse of a director himself is GONE.

This is EXACTLY the film me and all the other people (aside from routh-bootists) really wanted- a COMPLETE reboot.

Singer is GONE...now the repairing can commence with that F/U/C/K/I/N/G ASSHOLE out of the picture. That ASSHOLE admitted he never read a single Superman comic and it showed in his damned film!

F/U/C/K YOU SINGER!!!

@itBegins2005- Spacey was a "perfectly serviceable Luthor"????? Are you [frick]ING KIDDING ME??!!

He was ALL-CAMP. He was a copycat of the Hackman campy version of Lex. So far, Lex Luthor has yet to have a proper portrayal on the big screen. This is his chance to be 'cool' for once. To dump the [frick]ING REAL-ESTATE SHIT and to finally be a REAL villain.

Kevin Spacey = FAIL.

@PatrickBateman47- Yes, Snyder IS a nerd...and that may just well be what Superman needs at this point- a NERD to direct his final film. Singer proved himself to NOT be a Superman-nerd and look what happened to that train-wreck. At least with Snyder being a Superman-nerd he KNOWS HIS SHIT. And he knows what to do with Superman. :D

the whole "christ-like" thing i think wasnt the problem with returns. i mean superman is DC's golden child and does have that essence in the comics. but damn he did need to at least throw ONE punch! dont get me wrong i hated returns but i did find a few small things in it to be kinda cool. cant wait for snyder to finish

@LP4...i never in a million years said that i didnt want a fighting Superman. I want there to be action int he films and that he shouldnt fight for worthy causes. My response back then was in response to a bunch of you guys saying that that was all you wanted to see. BUT SUPERMAN IS MUCH MORE THAN A FIGHTER also what i did say is that RETURNS was what it was supposed to be. It served its purpose as a movie in portraying his RETURN and to establish that among mankind. Do i think it could have been better? yes, but the SINGERS sequel im sure would have been EPIC.

@Keith...yadda yadda yadda. Yes they were jewish, and SUPES grew up METHODIST or CHRISTIAN. In comicbook-dome he is the perfect example of who the average joe would like to emulate. the perfect source for good, hence he was CHRIST LIKE.
