Immortals' Director Tarsem Singh on Henry Cavill's Casting as Superman

Immortals' Director Tarsem Singh on Henry Cavill's Casting as Superman

Back in the 1980s, the makers of Teen Wolf found themselves in the fortuitous position of having a film starring Michael J. Fox which he shot just before shooting Back to the Future. The box office impact on the former was impressive, and Immortals director Tarsem Singh feels similarly blessed by having cast Henry Cavill prior to his being cast as the Man of Steel.

At WonderCon, Singh was told producer Mark Canton response to the news was that he yelled out a window in excitement, to which the literally fast-speaking director mused, "He probably would have because he yelled at me many times before that saying, 'Why? Why this guy?'"

As Singh explains it, when he cast Cavill as the demi-god Theseus, he needed someone who could change the nature of their performance along with a script still in evolution. Says the director, "I told him, 'Right now Theseus is the son of a king, but by the time the script is done he may be a peasant, which he now is. I realized he could handle anything I threw at him. In the words of the famous Miss Piggy, 'Some piggies just have it, and some don't.' I saw him and I thought, 'That piggy has it.' The studio didn't agree and wished I'd picked a better known actor. But when he was announced as Superman, they said, 'Ah, you picked the right piggy.'"

I know this on the Zod topic again, but I just want to say that I, too, had an initial bout of disappointment that he was the choice of villain. But that being said, the fact that Goyer and Nolan wrote the screenplay, and with Zack Snyder directing, suggests that this is NOT going to just be a retread of what's come before. Yes, we've seen the villain, but this is going to be a fresh take, hopefully presenting Zod as the flip side of the coin in terms of Superman; as a representation of what Kal-El COULD have become. Plus I'm trying to keep in mind that the Batman franchise has indeed re-used villains (Joker, Two-Face, Catwoman, Bane) and the last time we saw Zod on screen was 31 years ago.

EdGross@ Agree! I hoped that Brainiac or Lex and Metallo would be the main villain/villains, but when you think about it Zod is hundred times better choice than Gen. Sam Lane and the army thing.

Ven0m@ Couldnt agree more
