MAN OF STEEL Director Zack Snyder Confirms Early Plans For The Movie To Be Set In THE DARK KNIGHT's World

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder confirms that there were once tentative plans in place for his Superman reboot to be set in the same world of The Dark Knight, while revealing who else he eyed for Batman!

Man of Steel was released in 2013, just one year after Christopher Nolan wrapped up his Batman trilogy with The Dark Knight Rises. Speculation at the time pointed to Zack Snyder's movie taking place in the "NolanVerse," and the trailers definitely gave it the same feel as the British filmmaker's work.

Now, Snyder has confirmed that when he started developing a Superman reboot in 2010, the idea of the two franchises being connected was considered. "It was not 100 percent off the table. We did talk about it a little bit," he admitted in an interview with MTV's Josh Horowitz (via THR).

Of course, had it happened, Henry Cavill's Superman would have been hanging around with John "Robin" Blake, the cop who took over the Batman mantle in Bruce Wayne's absence. "It would have been Joseph. Which could have been cool," Snyder said, adding that he understands why Nolan kept his series separate. "I like that his thing doesn’t get muddied by these other touches."

Moving on to discuss the movie that would eventually become Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Snyder revealed that he considered another actor for the role of his Caped Crusader before Ben Affleck: Red Sparrow star Matthias Schoenaerts. "I was talking to him a lot about it. He never got in the suit, but I did do a bunch of mock-ups of him, because Ben was on the fence. And I don’t blame him. Everyone should be on the fence when you’re asked, ‘Do you want to play Batman?'"

Ultimately, it was decided that the actor was too young to play an older Batman, but it's fun to think about what Schoenaerts' version might have looked like (his name never came up at the time, no great surprise when Warner Bros. wanted a big star to take on the role).

What do you think about these latest revelations from Snyder?

Glad it didn't end up happening, leaving the Nolan universe it's own unique standout.
For better or worse Afflecks Batman set the world Snyder built in MOS

@Blergh - dude it would have made so much more sense and been way cooler if it was Christian Bale's Batman. Sucks they didn't do it.

If any movie was tonally gonna bridge the gap between Man of Steel and The Dark Knight, its The Dark Knight Rises. Rises felt almost campy, like the Batman Forever writers somehow snuck into Nolans laptop and edited the script.

@ElricReturns - that’s a bit of a reach

@ElricReturns - Agree, but even TDR had a lighter tone than BvS or JL. I say Ryan Reynold's Green Lantern would've fit in with the ridiculousness of TDR too.

@ElricReturns - Rises is the weakest of the trilogy but still a strong Batman movie, especially compare to the last 2 (or three) we’ve gotten with Snyder

@ElricReturns - I have no clue what movie you watched but it certainly wasn't The Dark Knight Rises. Both Burton movies were far campier honestly (especially Batman Returns)

''Ultimately, it was decided that the actor was too young to play an older Batman''

I wonder why that choice was made. It was not like we had a Superman in his early years either. And honestly, I liked Schoenaerts in Army of the Dead and think he could've done something more interesting with the role than Ben's ended up being.

And now that I think about it, having had Blake as Batman would've made the killing part a whole lot less bothering (considering cops might have a different pov on the matter).

This is the article that will bring @Forthas back from the shadows.

(Personally I'm glad the TDK trilogy wasn't tainted by Snyder's work)

Thank [frick] that didn't happen. Wouldn't want the Nolanverse to be sullied by the garbage that is Snyder's work.

Why did it have to be an older Batman? Hell, most of the choices Bruce made in BvS would have been a lot easier to understand if he were less experienced. Like his physical training montage to take on a guy that literally swatted his car away like a fly.
