My Current Thoughts: Man Of Steel

My Current Thoughts: Man Of Steel

These are just some thoughts on what I think of the current direction for Zack Snyder's upcoming reboot of the Superman franchise, covering mostly casting and what we know of the story so far.

First off, I'd like to have a brief rant concerning Warner Bros' not rebooting the franchise until now. After Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, many people lost interest in the Superman film franchise, and even when we had a modern version of the Last Son of Krypton back in 2006, that film (Superman Returns) wasn't carried out to its full potential. It stuck too closely to the Donner formula and proved that we needed a proper reboot/modern retelling of the character. With that said, I believe that they should've ended the original series with the fourth movie, reboot with Brandon Routh and a GOOD script, and voila. It's like trying to revive the original Batman franchise after Batman & Robin without totally rebooting it...some dead horses can only be beaten for so long.

Now back to the main topic: Man Of Steel. Personally, I'm liking the tone Zack Snyder is apparently bringing to this movie. A dark, violent Superman movie always sounds good, and the fact that Christopher Nolan (who's personally my favorite director of all time) will be producing makes me believe that this will be the best Superman movie ever. However, considering Nolan's the 'creative godfather' of the movie, Snyder will probably bring in a lot of realism/realistic stuff/etc, which would be tricky to do for a character like Superman. It's easy to use that approach for a character like Batman or even Iron Man to a degree, but for a character who flies, shoots laser beams, has freeze breath, etc, using the complete Nolan approach would be very hard. Which is why I suggest (and what probably will be used) that the tone/relevance of Man Of Steel should be a mix of Nolan's philosophy and the fantasy elements (I only suggest the following since Zack Snyder's Superman won't have anything to do with the pending Justice League film): Have Kryptonians be the only beings with super powers, with the rest of Earth/other planets not having powers.

The next thing I want to address is the casting. Up to this point, I've approved of at least half of the current choices. Despite my not previously hearing of Henry Cavill until after the news of his being cast in the red boots, he seems perfect for the job. Kevin Costner is an inspired choice for Pa Kent as well, IMO. I never saw Amy Adams as Lois Lane (she's one of my favorite actresses, but I'm not sure if she can do well as Lois), but we'll see what she can do. Diane Lane seems too young to be playing Ma Kent, but if they're portraying a younger version at first and then digitalizes Lane with elderly stuff, I wouldn't have a problem.

Speaking of problems concerning the cast, we recently hit the most fan boy panned choice so far: the unknown Michael Shannon as General Zod. I've seen many complaints about MOS being a remake of Superman II (especially with the recent news of Zod having a female Kryptonian sidekick), and that Snyder won't use any villains that haven't be put on film yet. I'll have to say, although this is the weakest casting choice by far IMO, I can't really have much of a say. I'm very unfamiliar with Shannon, and he doesn't seem right for Zod, but I don't believe I could have an opinion until I've seen the guy act the role out. And to those saying that Zod will be the main villain for MOS, we'll have to wait and see. Maybe Zod will be introduced as a side villain to be set up in a sequel, with Brainiac, Metallo, or even Darkseid being the main villain for MOS. Also, Nolan has said that MOS won't be at all influenced by the Donner films, so we shouldn't have anything to worry.

Finally, I'd like to briefly discuss the main plot of the film (of what we know, anyways). I don't care for the fact that it'll likely feature Krypton and the origin story heavily, mainly because the origin story's been told before. But that's just me. However, I like how they're completely changing the look of Krypton this time around (with it reportedly looking like something from Star Wars) and that it'll have more action. Also, I'd like it if there was a main villain behind the scenes in MOS and the sequels (Darkseid?), with Lex Luthor not having a very significant role until later on in the series.

Well there's the first entry of 'My Current Thoughts', a new editorial series I'm starting. The next part will be on The Dark Knight Rises, coming hopefully by the end of the weekend or so.

Im sorry but how could you say that Shannon was the weakest. He's a phenomenal actor who actually looks intimidating. We dont know what kind of role Zod will have so all those [female dog]ing about it being the same as Superman II can just shut the hell up. For me Amy Adams is defo the weakest choice, she's not even a natural black hair colour.

P.S.
Zod=Ra's Al Ghul
Metallo=Scarecrow
Luthor=Falcone

It makes sense!!

I haven't got any complaints with where this film is going. I don't judge casting (unless its recasting an already well established character in a franchise that isn't rebooted) until I've seen them in the role so no problems there. I'm with you in saying it WILL NOT be a remake of Superman II, which IMO is a ridiculous assumption anyway.

I can't believe you're saying Shannon is weak yet you want a WEAK actor like Routh to come back.

Shannon from what i hear is a GREAT and PHENOMENAL actor. He was nominated for a grammy or something for like a 5 minute cameo, that's how good he is.

yet ROUTH...?? That guy is the weakest actor I've ever seen, monotone in all his roles...gets crappy movies...

No no, this film will be fine.

@LP4 I said that I'm very unfamiliar with Shannon's career (heck I don't think I've heard of him until he was rumored for a role in MOS), and I honestly don't see him as Zod at all (seems more like a Bizarro or even Lex Luthor to a degree). And I believe that Routh can do a good job, like I said he just needs a good script to follow and he should do fine. But hey, to each his own.

@Paul- Yeah he's been given good scripts and has sucked in every single one. Scott Pilgrim he essentially played Clark Kent (very monotone) in Zac and Miri make a porno again with his monotone acting.

This is Superman's LAST shot at the big screen and I don't think using someone as risky as ROUTH is such a good gamble. And the Superman role won't wait for him to improve his acting.

How is turning Superman dark going in the right direction? Have you ever read a Superman comic? Are you a fan of the character?

@LP4- i've heard nothing but positive things about, and personally i loved, Rouths performance in scott pilgrim. it was amazing. I think you just flat out don't like him, and thats cool too cause it's like... you're opinion man. But he was good in scott pilgrim... and as much as i love most, not all, of Kevin smiths work... Zac and Miri did not have a good script. Mediocre is more like... sadly. But again, Routh is not a bad actor. you just don't like him and thats fine.

I for one-- am still hopeful that either NOLAN decides at the last minute to join the universes or that once NOLAn an co are gone that WB will wise up and agree to pay both BALE and CAVILL an obscene amount of money to reprise for the JLA under a different director. AHEM - Peter Jackson.

I have already shared with my articles and polls how a JLA film can be brought together and who should direct it. So far CBM polls and comments have shown that by a majority vote that we at least have that in common.

NOW if we dont get continuity with BALE, CAVILL,....then WB should wait to do JLA and just give us ROUTH back and if they cant get BALE to reprise then hes an idiot...so reboot. WHEN JLA IS FINALLY FEASIBLE>>>THEN WB should hire PETER JACKSON. He has better skill than the producer that gave them millions upon millions with the HARRY POOTER franchise. Wanna make bucks??? GET YOUR PJ's ON!

I dont think dark is the way to go with SUPERMAN....hopefully thiss wont be a DARK film....i can deal with gritty parts...but leets not make SUPERMAN DARK.

@naterator: A new Supergirl movie would be awesome considering how bad the last one was. It was so bad most people foreget about and don't put it on their worst comic book movie list.

I have to emphasize that I don't think that it is a wise idea to make this movie excessively violent. In my book that would equal fail.
Action = Yes
Over extenuated violence = No

And LP4 is correct. This actor is really intimidating. Check him out in Revolutionary Road.

@PaulRom awesome article buddy! agree... and i think zod will probably be set up 4 the sequel... although i'd really like DC/WB to convince nolan and snyder to have a connected universe... but who knows DC/WB may not even own superman after this film... so oh well...

@DoctorWho Yup. The guy's a brilliant story teller, and I like how he can make movies awesome while at the same time with little to no CGI (at least in the Batman films).
I'm thinking maybe Zod shouldn't be set up in this film for the second movie...then people would REALLY be accusing Snyder and co. of ripping off the Donner films.
