SUPERMAN/BATMAN Animated Series That Could Have Been

Premiering this month on Cartoon Network is the CG animated series Beware the Batman. In this interview posted at Voices From Krypton.net, producer Mitch Watson details that before settling on the final concept for the show, one idea was a Superman/Batman series.

“The first version was an Escape From New York kind of thing, which was a lot of fun, but I agree it was probably too dark for where they wanted to go with the show,” says Beware the Batman producer Mitch Watson in an exclusive interview. “Then we came up with the lighter version of the show, which was Batman – specifically Bruce Wayne – and Clark Kent at the beginning of their careers. The show revolved around Clark as a cub reporter coming to Gotham City, where he meets Bruce. They’re also just becoming Batman and Superman. Clark and Bruce become friends, but Batman and Superman hate each other. Then they realize who each other is and get on the right side and end up living in the same building."

Living in the same building? Wayne Manor or sharing an apartment with the original Green Lantern?

I'm not a fan of the CG cartoons. Give me 2D cartoons or give me nothing.

Another great article Ed!

I would still be up for a team-up animated series.

This would blow all other animated show's and would hype up a movie!

Lets Hope!

So many missed opportunities with that...
Oh well. I'm willing to give Beware the Batman a chance. But from what I've seen, it doesn't look like it's going to be that good...

I've seen the first episode of Beware the Batman, and I think they did a great job with it. They surprised the hell out of me.

Anyone else miss the Andre 3000 show on CN?

T.V. CGI just isn't at a point yet where it looks convincing. I don't know why so many choose to use that format. It's more expensive than hand drawn animation, with less of the detail.

Mind Boggling.

Thanks, IM53. And McGee, I frickin' LOVE The Odd Couple. Just thought I'd mention it.

Batman/Superman team up series would have been great.Maybe they could reuse the idea later on in the show like in it's third or fourth season. That is if it survives that long to get a third or forth season.

Living in the same building? I don't know about that but I would take anything over Beware the Shit Show.

TV CGI shows just don't have the quality of a Pixar movie or a game cutscene. Or at least not the ones I've seen. The last CGI show that actually managed to positively surprise me to some degree at least was the Turtles show.

Hm, I was gonna check out Beware the Batman anyways, but now that you said you liked it, Ed, I'm even looking forward to it... a little. ;)

So Ed, Batman and Superman living in the same building?

I'm getting kind of a Seinfeld vibe here.

Superman will be like Jerry, Batman will be like Kramer, we can have George be Gordan and Elaine be Wonder Woman.

I would've preferred that to Beware of the Batman. Just bring back Young Justice

I would rather see a Supes/Bats show with sock puppets than what this new shitty series is offering.

IM53 & McGee are kind of an odd couple...

Damn, thanks Gusto, now I'll have to dust off my Strange Brew DVD and give it a watch this weekend.

I don't trust CN with DC properties, anymore. They can kick rocks. The last straw was Young Justice.

The first version sounds good, but obviously since WB wants to cater to CN and their kiddie demographic, they felt is was too dark. WB needs to find a different outlets/ stations to showcase the animated shows and ideas to an older audience. If not we will not be getting any more shows like Batman TAS, Superman TAS, JLU or YJ. The GL animated series was good also. I wish they would put their shows back on the CW. I'll give Beware the Batman a shot.

That sounds like it would have been better then the new Batman cartoon. I wish WB would take a risk and put out a more mature version of their DC Comic properties. I would love to see it come out on HBO or just have it come on the CW. This way you can target the real fans.

Superman and Batman living together? All I can hear is the theme from the Odd Couple. (thanks for posting that btw- always loved that show!) So they're what- sharing an apartment?

come on guys! Let's just go all the way with it and have a bunch of their biggest villains living in the same apartment building. Hilarity would ensue! They'll have a Batcave under the building and half the fun will be hiding it from the villains! This sounds like some good silly '70s-style fun.

Anything DC Animation is worth watching.

Maybe they can do this in the future, while World's Finest or JL being in production.

man that would have been awesome, bring back the yj style animation for a new Justice Leauge centered series. You can still have the titans or yj team but focus more on the real JL!!! Come on!!!

Nothing can ever top the original 92-95 run of "The Animated Series." That show is so well done. The early one with clay face is hand drawn animation at its finest. The main problem I have with CGI cartoons is that they look kinda cheap, but I know it's because they're expensive to make. I'm just alway disappointed with 22 min CGI cartoons. DC/Warner bros. hand drawn DVD movies are normally pretty good though.
I'm wondering when we're going to to see a really well done (Pixar quality) cartoon on the big screen from DC.
But I'm sure Disney and Marvel will beat them to the punch on that too.

Definitely should have gone the Superman / Batman route. Batman has more than enough on his own and people are going to watch him no matter what. Without question Superman should have been added to the mix with Batman. With this Superman gets viewed by a larger audience and Batman still gets his time as well. Sometimes I wonder who calls the shots on deciding this stuff. Market both products & even more obvious bring some extra promotion to your #2 superhero teaming him up with your #1.
