James Gunn’s SUPERMAN Casts Pruitt Taylor Vince To Play Pa Kent In The DCU's Inaugural Film

Although James Gunn previously mentioned that Superman won't focus on the Man of Steel's origin, we now know that Pa Kent will make an appearance in the DCU film.

While filming has already begun, many Superman experts knew that some fairly important roles in the film were yet to be cast- the roles of the Man of Steel's Earth parents, Ma and Pa Kent.

Today, The Wrap has unveiled who's playing one of these roles as veteran character actor Pruitt Taylor Vince has been selected to play Pa Kent.

Pruitt Taylor Vince (63), previously won an Emmy for his role as Clifford Banks in the 1997 American legal drama, Murder One. He most recently played Rick in Bird Box,  Angelo Ruggiero in Gotti, and Grill in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Pa Kent has previously been played by  Kevin Costner in Man of Steel and Glenn Ford in 1978’s Superman.

In other recent Superman news, Gunn took to social media to address rumors that Lex Luthor would be creating a Superman doppelganger in the form of Bizarro or Ultraman to challenge David Corenswet's Clark Kent.

Said Gunn, "The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman. The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor. I don’t know where all the stuff is coming from that it’s something other than this."

"There are so many stories coming out every day it’s difficult to deal with and everytime I strike something down I’m giving it attention. So, I’ll say again, don’t believe anything unless you see it HERE (& why would you want to know everything before the movie comes out anyway?"

Superman, formerly titled Superman: Legacy, is currently filming at a sound stage in Atlanta, with on-location filming in Ohio on the horizon, at a site that could potentially be used for the Hall of Justice.

It seems Gun will be pulling double-duty, as he'll also be helming a few episodes of Peacemaker season 2, which is also filming in Atlanta.

With cameras set to film out in the open soon, the hope among the fandom is that Gunn and DC Studios will soon reveal the first, official full look at Corenswet's Man of Steel costume.

The James Gunn-directed (and written) film stars David Corenswet as Kal-El/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

Rounding out the cast are Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/The Engineer, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Additionally, Nicholas Hoult has been confirmed by Gunn to portray Lex Luthor in the film. Milly Alcock was also recently cast as Supergirl and is also expected (but unconfirmed) to appear in Legacy, as well.

Currently set for release on July 11, 2025, Superman: Legacy Superman is the first film in Gunn's reboot of the DCEU.

Definitely the weirdest casting so far. Oh well I still think this is on the right track

Was Clark Gregg not available?

JonC - 4/16/2024, 5:44 PM
@bobevanz - He's gonna be more of an Uncle Owen to Superman's Luke. Hiding who he is and where he came from. I could see this parallel Star Wars exactly.

Bro looks like he runs a prison gang lol. But also looks like he could be a lifetime midwestern farmer too.

Gunn casts well so I’m sure dude will kill it. I also like that this casting isn’t the assumed, cliche kind of choice. He has the look of a grounded salt of the earth, hardworking type of dude.

@GhostDog - or a former leader of a prison gang that is now a midwestern farmer lol

I get yah , I do like that it feels inspired though .

@TheVisionary25 - if you view it from the lens of Gunn mirroring his own upbringing too, it works. I read he grew up in the Midwest. Probably knew a number of midwestern types. The actors is from rural Louisiana too.

This guy feels like a “real” guy if you know what I mean. Smallville Pa Kent felt the same. Obviously his look was different but there was an authenticity to how he carries himself and portrayed himself that I could see working with this guy. You look at him and could see that he was a man who worked with his hands for decades. That’s Pa Kent. If you can tap into that, that’s not a bad place to start.

He may not look like the traditional Johnathan Kent but I could see him feel like him…

He just already feels authentic.

@GhostDog - Yeah was thinking the same. I have family that works on farms and have visited many myself and I'll tell you this there are far more guys that look like him than John Schneider LOL. Also more dads in general look more like a Pruitt than the usual ruggedly handsome dads in movies.

@Steel86 - yeah but man was Schneider auch a good Jonathan

Definitely my favorite live action version atleast.

Apparently he was also in Constantine 2005.

First ever bald-looking Jonathan Kent compared to other versions, including TV iterations.

Welcome aboard.

@Dotanuki - Probably but the actor never seems to have wore one in most of his roles. Will have to be a good one to make it look believable.

While not who I would have ever expected to get the role , the guy is a good actor and can play the wise & grounded Pa Kent so looking forward to him in the role!!.

It does make me wonder how he or the Kents in general are integrated into the film…

Will it be in flashbacks since he could already have passed or will be like other versions where both his parents are alive and well which would be interesting to see.

@TheVisionary25 - I think we'll see Pa Kent die again. Gunn knows how to play emotional beats, a d Jon dying of his heart giving out is exactly that. Gunn is gonna put poor Clark through a lot
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 4/16/2024, 6:03 PM
@TheVisionary25 - Flashbacks could work as well and hit the emotional beats harder if they happen in moments when Clark feels lost and thinks back on his dad and what would he say now if he was around.

He'll always be my guy from Identity. First flick I remember seeing him in and he stole the show.

That tornado wouldve took one look at him and then turned around in Man of Steel.

Once again the casting is uninspired. Not one Oscar caliber cast of this film. Shows how much the top talent is interested in this film.
DTor91
DTor91 - 4/16/2024, 6:14 PM
@Forthas - Everyone they got is great, and has delivered tremendously in other projects. Brosnahan has earned a number of awards herself. I didn’t know Oscar caliber is a requirement for cbms now. That’s just dumb. And even then, everyone here is capable of delivering those kinds of performances.
Forthas
Forthas - 4/16/2024, 6:24 PM
@DTor91 - Oscar caliber actors give films gravitas and signals to people that actors that have their choice of roles believe in the film and it's director.

While it is not certain whether this will or won't be a great film when it is invariably compared to Man of Steel the difference in talent level may be stark.
RolandD
RolandD - 4/16/2024, 8:24 PM
@Forthas - I guess we’ll just have to settle for an Emmy winning actor as Pa Kent. Oh wait. There’s also an Emmy award winning actress playing Lois Lane. (Checks some more). Oh, she also won Golden Globes in two consecutive years.
