Some origin stories are so familiar - or have been told so many times - that it's damn near impossible to put a fresh spin on them. Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man are all good examples, though 2013's Man of Steel was the last time we saw Kal-El's journey to Earth explored on screen.
Even so, just like Spider-Man: Homecoming glossed over Peter Parker's spider bite and The Batman didn't show us the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne, it appears the next Superman movie is also skipping that hero's familiar origin.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is currently in the midst of writing a new solo outing for the Man of Tomorrow (minus Henry Cavill). Now, he's confirmed on Twitter that he doesn't plan to deliver yet another movie showing the destruction of Krypton, baby Kal-El's arrival in Kansas, and his childhood and teen years where he learned to become a hero.
Thank goodness, eh?
Instead, as we told you last night, the plan is to focus on a younger Clark Kent during his early days in Metropolis. That sounds an awful lot like a "Year One" or "Year Two" story to us, and is an interesting approach to Superman in this new DCU.
In Variety's report, it's said that "The script will focus on the character’s life as a cub reporter in the fictional city of Metropolis. Audiences will encounter him meeting key characters, like colleague Lois Lane." That's bordering on being an origin story, but we're hoping Gunn has found a way to put a fresh spin on this period and the emergence of Superman as a hero.
Of course, we will eventually get a new take on Superman's earliest years in the Ta-Nehisi Coates movie that's set to feature a Black lead in a period setting.
Stay tuned for updates.
