The Man of Steel Returns with his opinion on some of the DC Uniforms

How do I feel on the new costumes, now that I've had plenty of time to think about them...

JUSTICE LEAGUE:

Now I’m the first to admit, I haven’t been onboard with the reboot. Sure the concept is ok, but the information given out, the art, the rumors; well to be honest it all made me more than uncomfortable about it. I can’t honestly say I love the costumes.

Superman: Aside from looking terrible bland, why is it armor? Better yet, why not just argue that the red trunks are just a piece of armor on the new suit so he can have them? Some call the trunks “silly” but there was an easy fix. But honestly if he’s Superman and if he works at the Daily Planet how the hell does he hide his suit under his clothing? I don’t think he needs armor, kryptonian or not he’s already super strong so why would he need to be protected by armor? At least it wasn’t this:
I hate it when people attach the cape to his shield.

Batman: It looks like a mixture of Arkham Asylum’s Armored Batman and the Batman INC. (a.k.a. Earth One) suit. I don’t understand the big deal with it, but it doesn’t really bug me all that much.

Wonder Woman: OK I understand, a lot of us nerds who read W.W. want sexy, and legs are kinda sexy. But In my most humble of opinion, I think that our hard headed-ness to refuse Wonder Woman leg coverage is about as ridiculous to me as Superman’s Red trunks were to others. She’s a warrior, she would want something covering her leg, pants or armor but something to protect them. I can go with the suit the T.V. Pilot wanted to use with Pants and red boots it just seemed logical. I mean as she looks, I think she would be about as imposing as a super model. So please people, the excessive exposed skin is ridiculous if Superman must go without red trunks then I saw W.W. must be given leg armor/pants. I'm ok with the image in the picture above, I'm not ok with this:

Green Lantern: I don’t know why the sketch wasn’t used, it was perfect, it looked like armor, it looked alien, and it basically looked like what the movie should’ve. I can see GL having armor but the reboot uniform is barely different. I personally feel it should be more changed. this is what GL Should look like:

Flash: it just looks like it was given more of a design made it more uniformed like. I can let this one slide it doesn’t bug me a lot but it should add something to the design and not be different for the sake of different.

Aquaman: It’s barely different kinda in the same manner as GL and Flash. I don’t really like it. I would love to have seen more liberties with the character, but what is, is.

Cyborg: You look pretty good. I don’t have a legitimate reason to Bitch at you.

I like the Green Lantern sketch concept. I skimmed through, I got bored.

I just think the suit is meant to be stronger to explain why it never rips or tears during all of the crazy stuff he does, not to armor him. A lot like the flash's suit is supposed to be super aerodynamic. If u think about it, a suit able to be made by hand by ma kent would be trashed every day. Bullet holes, burned up and sheredded by the wind. I just think they are just trying to take some of the silliness away from superman. It doesn't make him weak, after all, thor wears armor too and he doesn't need it.

As far as Superman's trunks go, ask yourself as a character, does Superman really need his undies on the outside, or do you just need him to have them?

The suit is not armor to protect superman, the suir is armor to protect the suit, which does make a lot more sense... unless they are going with Superman's powers being psionically based, then it doesn't matter...

The only thing I dislike more than this Superman costume is the new movie costume.

I really loved GL's concept art wish they would've used that! everyone looks ok... I would prefer if WW had pants, and Flash didn't have those lighting things sticking out... have them on the side fine, but not sticking out... lol... Superman I thought was great just I felt that he needed a gold buckle but that's about it... :)

@Bastard - "All I can say is... Don't fix what isn't broken."

It honestly hurts to say, buddy, but Supes last movie under performed financially, critically and with the fans. Superman's best selling comic(Action Comics) is ranked 42 in sales. Supes is hurting right now, and bad. I do think the trunks are VERY outdated, but I'm a huge fan with or without them. I'd rather him change and survive than go the way of the dinosaurs...

I still can't believe the number of people who are still stuck on Superman's circus acrobat red undies. X-Men is consistently one of the hottest selling comic books around and they have 5 films out in just the recent years; and they change their costumes and stories constantly, while Superman book & film sales are dismal.

Thank god for the new 52 reboot and MOS. I am excited about it and I think it will be successful judging from the pre-order sales (already 200,000+ copies) and the excitement surrounding the new MOS film. As a result of this, the Superman creative teams in the future can change his stories, costumes, etc without fear from the "fans". Change is good, especially for Superman, a character that had been in the dumps in comics & films for years after years. What is the point of keeping Superman traditional and "iconic" if the "iconic" is stagnated. And if you say: "they're only doing for the money..." Well, YES, that's the point, isn't it? To get people interested to buy and read the books, to watch the films, to buy the toys? If the Superman books and films are so successful, then I say don't change it. But if it is on life support and the film franchise is non-existent, then you got to revitalize it, not let it wither away.

People who say that they will not buy the new books or watch the new MOS film because they simply got rid off the red underwear is absolutely absurd beyond any reasoning.

I could voice my opinion here...I will leave it to this: they will retcon all of this in the next five years. Half of the costume changes will survive. The rest will be modified between old and '52.'

Even as iconic as the American flag is, it has gone through over 40 different changes over the years. We didn't have the current version of the US flag until the 1960's.
Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 9/2/2011, 9:51 PM
@jenniferjuniper....As far as the flag goes the only real changes were the configurations of the stars, which represented the number of states, which was changing until the last 60 years when we stopped at 50, so shut up. BTW the flag's current configuration was set in 1950 with the addition of Hawaii in 1949 and Alaska in 1950, so go read a history book, okay?

Superman is the godfather of all superheroes. You can change the X-Men's suits and it's no big deal. You can change Batman's suit and it makes sense because it's based on the latest technology which is always updating. Superman, being who he is, shouldn't be messed with, changed, diluted, destroyed. There are even songs about "you don't tug on Superman's cape".

I agree with you on almost everything.

And I also absolutely HATE when artists connect the cape to the sheild. It looks so stupid, its irritating.

Honestly don't have much of a problem with the new suit in the comics atleast its not diluted like it is in the MOS film, I have nothing against that suit doesn't look bad at all, but seriously the colours should be a little bit brighter. Anyways decent article and that GL armour looks pretty sweet, thats how it should have looked like in the movie and has any one seen the rejected proposal for Aquamans costume it actually looked really good. I feel sorry for Aquaman the most its a reboot a chance to change things up but his costume still ends up looking the lamest.

I agree with most of the stuff you wrote. While Superman's new costume does look OK, there's no way it could beat the original.
I like Batman's costume, because Batman (unlike Superman) actually needed armour, he's a normal human, so it made more sense to give him armour than have him run around in big grey bat themed footie-pyjamas.

And yeah, Green Lantern's costume in the sketch looks cool, if you're going to change Superman's classic costume, you should change Green Lantern's too.

Dont understand why Flash has a regular costume and high-tech boots, Wonder Woman would look better with the colour scheme of her old costume on the new one, Aquaman looks the same and Cyborg looks barely different.

@Knightstalker - While I agree that comparing these changes to the USA Flag is not the best analogy, I believe jenniferjuniper is closer to the dates so I am not sure why you are telling anyone to shut up. Look at any history book or web site and you will probably find that Alaska and Hawaii entered the union in 1959 with the last final changes to the flag coming in 1959-1960.

Regarding the suits, the only two that I personally have problems with are Superman and Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman - I wish DC would decide if they are giving this poor girl pants or not. I like the idea of giving her pants. She is getting into battles, it does look a little ridiculous to have her fighting in a glorified bathing suit. I can look at "other" pictures if I want to see more skin on females. Also, the choker collar looks absurd IMO.

Superman - While I have always been a classic suit fan, I can understand that the circus inspired trunks are up for consideration. Part of me hates to see it go, the other part of me is glad because now that is one less thing that non-Superman fans can use to make fun of this great character. I don't really see a need for armor on his suit however due to some of the battles he gets in where his suit rips and gets damaged, if that is the reason, I could buy into it. However, I absolutely hate the stupid high collar they gave him with this suit. What makes it look more ridiculous is that it looks like a coordinated effort among team members to all have high collar uniforms (Aquaman, GL, WW Choker, Superman). Please DC, circumcise Supermans collar...

Although at the end of the day I know that it is Supermans noble actions that define his character, not the color/style of his suit.
