Zack Snyder Opens Up On Superman Approach; Tentative Title, Collaborating and More!

Chatting in-depth with the LA Times' Hero Complex, the proposed director for Warner Bros' Superman reboot, Zack Snyder discusses his approach to the 'Man Of Steel.' Also revealing the tentative, suspected title of the film, Snyder speaks on how his film will deviate Bryan Singer's 2006 approach and more. Check it out!

“Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach
that there’s been no other Superman movies,”
Snyder said. “If you look at ‘Batman Begins,’ there’s that structure, there’s the canon that we know about and respect but on other hand there’s this approach that pre-supposes that there haven’t been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.”

On the approach to Superman's past: "Respect the canon but don't be a slave to the movies." When suggested that the 2006 film was looking too into the past, “Yeah, and we’re not afraid of that at all,” Snyder said. “Our Superman, he’s got things to figure out but he’s a physical cat.” On further casting Snyder would say only: “There’s more to come and I think it’s consistent in its … awesomeness.”

“It’s been really great,” Snyder said of the collaboration so far. “Chris is awesome. He’s super-respectful but super-helpful, too. You can’t imagine a more generous [collaborator]…once he sort of got what I want to do with it, he was like, ‘OK,’ and once he said, ‘You know what, that’s awesome,’ now he’s 100%. If I say, ‘What do you think of this?’ he’s like, ‘That’s awesome,’ and then there’s a great give-and-take about it, a great conversation that we can have about it and making it better everyday. And by the way he’s hilarious, too.”

The site further mentions that the title of the reboot is tentatively Man Of Steel, however, that decision isn’t final. Anyhow, with Henry Cavill leading as Clark Kent, and actress Diane Lane so far taking up the supporting cast, Superman is scheduled for theaters December 2012!

This movie's going to look great, I just need it to have some great character depth and a moving story to go along with the action. Watchmen and 300 didn't deliver in that aspect.

Fantastic find/interview. I'm looking forward to Sucker Punch, not only because it looks epic, but because we'll get more interviews like this one. :)

reading what Geoff wrote

" The cast will include Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent and Diane Lane as Martha Kent."

so we can say Costner IS Jonathan Kent then..

what he said about the Superman suit

"We’re going to have to show it before we shoot, probably a while before that because [otherwise] someone will be on the set and get a picture of it.”

we'll see an official picture of it like we did with Spiderman!! maybe in Late July/Early August!!

Geeks, he also said to not be a slave to the movies. have a little faith. I got a feeling that having cut his teeth on Watchmen and 300 (neither of them I was impressed with) he's going to figure it out. Working with Nolan will only make it even better.

This movie will be great. All I have ever wanted to see was a live-action Superman kicking some major ass. Give us some action!

@geeksiah~ a definition for canon: an authoritative list of books accepted as Holy Scripture b : the authentic works of a writer c : a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works. Hence, "respect the canon, but don't be a slave to the movies."

Watchmen and 300 had flare, but no substance, that's how.

@TheAntagonist and thisheart

Get outta here with you're Watchmen & 300 hating selves. GTFO
Watchmen and 300 had more substance than half the movies that are out these days...wtf are you talking about. The morals and themes and ideals in those two movies alone
were staggeringly deep. I don't think you really watched the movies...I bet you were one of those people who got bored because it was long. :-/

@gaikinger what are you... a halfwit redneck beck-sucking limbaugh-licking sheep-toad? why yes... yes you are.

i'm a proud socialist/atheist/progressive (and i wish i were gay so i could make you hate me even more) and i loved watchmen AND 300. so go spray your political piss all over the fox news site, and let the cbm sites stay on topic.

now have a nice day. peace on earth, blah blah blah.

Didn't WB lose the movie rights to Superman's origin in that recent court battle with the Shuster estate?

Meh, i liked 300 but watchmen was kinda... bleh. the only character i liked was rorschach. But that's soley based on the actor and the performance he gave. He was great. the rest of the cast was very bland. Snyder needs to learn to direct actros IMO (and, and this is IMO as well, Nolan isn't the best directer when it comes to directing actors either). But... i've got hope. This will hopefully be great.

So wht the FU@K does being a Demo have anything to do with what CBM's we like?

Didnt love 300 > thought it was over the top, but it was decent,,Hoping that Zach has grown from that experience. And im sure Nolan will put his stamp on this as well, ya know?

OSCURO=RETARD

As long as Nolan stays active, this movie has a chance of being more than a bunch of flashy bro-happy shit.

Don't get me wrong, Snyder is visually...imaginative. But his storytelling skills BLOW, as does his ability to elicit strong performances out of actors. Hope this cast holds it together.

@Fartman
I have no problem with a long movie if it's emotionally captivating and genuinely entertaining, that's why I'm hoping for something great. The issues that were presented in Watchmen and 300 could have been interesting but were not conveyed as properly as they should have been. The characters in these movies were also hardly memorable to me, besides a few phrases that people can't seem to stop saying left behind from 300 and without the Watchmen graphic novel, Snyder's movie version is pretty forgettable. Like I said, all this movie needs is some heart and it's a hit in my eyes. Oh yeah, making your movie characters likable would be a big improvement too, Snyder.

@gaikinger....How do you come to that conclusion? Wow!

@thisheart....thanks. At least someone else gets it.

Not to disrespect all those that enjoyed those movies. I didn't say I didn't enjoy Watchmen and 300, I just said I wasn't impressed. Great popcorn flicks they were, but they just didn't stimulate the cerebral cortex.

we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there’s been no other Superman movies

Wouldn't that mean the retelling of his origin story? Oh well, whatever. There are a lot of WTF?-statements made in the article but I'm thinking the movie is in good hands. The visuals will definitely be there and if Nolan has anything to do with input on the narrative and direction, it has more than a chance to be great.
