TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM Director Teases New Take On Shredder For Sequel

It's already been confirmed that classic TMNT villain Oroku Saki, aka The Shredder, will feature in Paramount Pictures' planned sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and director Jeff Rowe has now indicated that he intends to introduce a take on the character we haven't seen before.

Though he didn't feature in the actual movie, Shredder was originally going to serve as the Heroes in a Half-Shell's primary antagonist before the decision was made to focus on a newly-created character (Superfly) and save Saki for the sequel.

If you haven't seen Mutant Mayhem yet and don't want to know how Shredder factors in, spoilers follow.

In the post-credits scene, Cynthia Utrom decides to call in Shredder's services to help her take down the Turtles, and we get a quick glimpse of his signature purple cape and spiked armor as he looks over the New York skyline.

While chatting to Collider, Rowe was asked if he plans to take a fresh approach to the character in his Mutant Mayhem follow-up.

“That is exactly what I am trying to figure out and what my next meeting will be about. That is what we are in the thick of now. Shredder is just a great character. He’s an iconic, classic, loved character. He’s like the Joker. You know who he is, even if you’re not a fan of the source material. I think we definitely wanna do a villain-forward film. We’re currently trying to make decisions about that, but those decisions for us as filmmakers are always going to come from the place of what tells the best story, specifically about our main characters, the Turtles.”

Given the changes to Splinter's origin, it was always unlikely that this version of Shredder was going to be connected to the Turtles' father/sensei, which is something most earlier incarnations of the character have had in common.

“After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”

Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon will voice the roles of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael, respectively. The cast also includes Jackie Chan as Splinter, Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.

Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

@TheVandalore - That's funny, I was thinking about asking a similar question of if anyone actually enjoyed it and wanted more when I was reading the headline.

@TheVandalore - I’m in the same boat. I’ve heard mostly positive things but numerous negative aspects so I just can bring myself to check it. It wasn’t much of a hit so finding tons of people who can recommend it might be difficult.

@TheVandalore - I thought it was watchable and had some fun moments, but it was far FAR from what I’m hoping for in a future TMNT movie. It felt more like a kid with a bunch of action figures making a short story play out with them.

I’m still holding out for something like an updated OG TMNT movie from 1990. That story was simple, but it had depth (the tale of two fathers worked on so many levels), and made you feel like it was all happening in New York. A lot of the stuff coming out today doesn’t give you time to breath and actually know the characters and how they fit in a wider context.

@TheVandalore - it's the second best Ninja Turtles movie, after the first. If you're a fan of the universe, you'll love it

@TheVandalore - this movie is great. I was raised on the tutrles, and I don’t care if they stray from the origins a bit. It’s light hearted and funny but also has awesome action, and a wicked soundtrack. Ice Cube is an awesome villain, Jackie Chan is also awesome. The negativity comes from the neckbeards that can’t handle April being race swapped and minor tweaks to their origins. These people will never be happy. I strongly recommend this movie, you’ll have a good time.

@WarMonkey - “if anyone ACTUALLY enjoyed it.” Well it got a sequel, TV series, and video game all greenlit after it came out. Clearly some people did. You’d never know it because of all the whiney basement dwellers on this site.

@TheVandalore - It's a good movie if you have a vague idea about the turtles or at the very least don't care about alterations to the turtles. If there is certain aspects you really like a bout the turtles the movie could be a turn off... or if you just don't like Seth Rogan type humor. I'd say at the very least its worth watching once to form your own opinion cause you either hate it and drop it like I am or you like it and look forward to the sequel.

@WarMonkey - I definitely didnt hear anything about that…maybe after the screenings, I think they were all tentative based on reception. And let’s not forget where the real money is with the turtles…Toys!

@CaptainMexico - Ya, that's actually part of what I was wondering, toy sales. I haven't been paying attention much but I think I recall seeing something about the toys not selling wel. Or at least the new ones aren't, but the older models are from other shows still. I did see recently they released some retro models for sale like a week or 2 ago.

@TheVandalore - Wouldn't say I loved it, BUT, I did enjoy this iteration. This coming from someone who has grown up with the 80's / 90's toon & so on.

The only iteration of TMNT I hate is Rise of The TMNT.

If you like the 80's / 90's, 2003, 2007 Animated movie or 2012 iterations of the franchise, you should like or at least somewhat enjoy Mutant Mayhem.

Not my favorite version of the Turtles so far but I did like the movie so I’m looking forward to the sequel!!.

I do think the personal angle between the Turtles/Splinter & Shredder not being in this version could make it feel lacking but I’m willing to see what they do with the character & story before making a strong judgement about that.

I loved this take on the TMNT. For the first time in any movie or show they actually seemed like proper teenagers. Here's hoping for a few more sequels in this franchise.
